Native Languages of the Americas: Native American Cultures
Hello, and welcome to Native Languages of the Americas! We are a small non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting American Indian languages, particularly through the use of Internet technology. Our website is not beautiful. Probably, it never will be. But this site has inner beauty, for it is, or will be, a compendium of online materials about more than 800 indigenous languages of the Western Hemisphere and the people that speak them.
See the list of indigenous American peoples featured on our site.
See our alphabetical master list of American Indian tribes and languages , with links to more information about each.

Featured Native American Cultures
So far we have finished pages for 33 languages spoken by more than a hundred Indian nations in Canada and the United States. In addition to the language information, we have carefully collected and organized links to many different aspects of native life and culture, with an emphasis on American Indians as a living people with a present tense. American Indian history is interesting and important, but Indians are still here today, too, and we have tried to feature modern writers as well as traditional legends, contemporary art as well as museum pieces, and the issues and struggles of today as well as the tragedies of yesterday. Suggestions for new links are always

Micmac Indian Fact Sheet
These Facts For Kids section are being added in response to the many emails we've been receiving from young people looking for information about the Micmacs for school or home-schooling reports. We encourage students, especially older kids, to look through our main Mi'kmaq language and culture pages for more in-depth information about the tribe, but here are some straightforward answers to the questions we are most often asked by children, with Micmac pictures and links we believe are especially suitable for all ages.
How do you pronounce "Mi'kmaq?" What does it mean? It's pronounced MICK-mack, more or less. In their own language, Mi'kmaq people pronounce it more like MEE-gmakh, with a long first vowel and the final consonant further back in the throat than English K. The apostrophe is a vowel marker showing that the I is a long vowel. "Mi'kmaq" originally came from a word meaning "My friends".
What is the right way to spell "Mi'kmaq"? What is the best way to refer to Micmac people?

Native Americans American Indians Amerindians , or Red Indians ) are indigenous peoples , who lived in the Americas prior to the European colonization ; some of these ethnic groups still exist. The name "Indians" was bestowed by Christopher Columbus , who mistakenly believed that the places he found them were among the islands to the southeast of Asia known to Europeans as the Indies. (See further discussion below). Canadians now generally use the term First Nations to refer to Native Americans. In Alaska , because of legal use in the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act ( ANSCA ) and because of the presence of the Inuit Yupik , and Aleut peoples, the term Alaskan Native predominates. Medicine Dream Sep 2002
Medicine Dream has contributed greatly to the fight against drug and alcohol abuse as well as suicide prevention, by performing in a myriad of venues both in front of thousands at concert halls and intimate settings such as youth centers, schools, treatment centers and correctional facilities. Their hope is to reach youth at risk, build self-esteem, through educating people about the harmful effects of alcohol and drugs as well as influence First Nations people by promoting the pride of being an Aboriginal person. It is the band's desire to build understanding between indigenous nations and all peoples by communicating spiritual growth through living the Wellness Path. Medicine Dream is an Intertribal group representing many nations coming together to share the group's message as well as promote cultural unity. The members of the group are as diverse culturally as they are musically, representing the Athabascan, Apache, Aleut, Choctaw, Inupiaq, Mi'kmaq, Navajo, Yaqui and Scandinavian nations. Medicine Dream's newest recording is entitled "Tomegan Gospem" and is considered by many to be their best recording yet. This recording features a focused look into the Ktaqmkuk Mi'kmaq people of Newfoundland, Canada and features very important historical information. Many songs are expressing for the first time the elder's point of view of who the Ktaqmkuk Mi'kmaq people are.

Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition First Nations is a self-descriptive term for the various societies of the indigenous peoples Indigenous people are:
  • People living in an area prior to colonization by a state
  • People living in an area within a nation-state, prior to the formation of a nation-state, but who do not identify with the dominant nation.
  • The descendants of either of the above
Indigenous people are sometimes referred to as aborigines or as autochthonous , a Greek term that means "sprung from the earth," Greek authors of the classical period referred to the indigenous people of Greece, who had lived there since before any of the waves of Hellenic migration, as "Pelasgians." Mi'kmaq to Produce Children's Books
Canadian Aboriginal News

Mi'kmaq Flag Mi'kmaq elders are teaming up with parents and children to turn storytelling into children's books.
The $6,000 project, spearheaded by the Kjipuktuk Aboriginal College in Halifax, is one of 10 initiatives to get funding from a new family literacy endowment fund. The recipients were announced Thursday to coincide with Family Literacy Day in Nova Scotia.
"There are very few books that reflect Mi'kmaq heritage and culture for parents to read to their children,'' said Cheryl Lynn Hagan Deschamps, the college's family literacy co-ordinator.
Workshops will be held in various First Nations communities around the province in the coming months. Parents will hone their literacy skills by producing four books based on storytelling sessions. Children will illustrate the books, which will be published in English and Mi'kmaq.
Hagan Deschamps said the college, based at the Micmac Native Friendship Centre in Halifax, will share the books with day-care centres, kindergartens and other youth programs throughout Atlantic Canada.
