A well-stocked first-aid kit, kept in easy reach, is a necessity in every home. Having supplies gathered ahead of time will help you handle an emergency at a moment's notice. You should keep one first-aid kit in your home and one in each car. Be sure to bring a first-aid kit on family vacations. Choose containers for your kits that are roomy, durable, easy to carry, and simple to open. Plastic tackle boxes or containers for storing art supplies are ideal, since they are lightweight, have handles, and offer a lot of space. Include the following in each of your first-aid kits:
  • first-aid manual
  • sterile gauze
  • adhesive tape
  • adhesive bandages in several sizes
  • elastic bandage
  • antiseptic wipes
  • soap
  • antibiotic cream (triple-antibiotic ointment)
  • antiseptic solution (like hydrogen peroxide)
  • hydrocortisone cream (1%)
  • acetaminophen and aspirin (aspirin is not recommended for children under age 12)
  • extra prescription medications (if the family is going on vacation)
  • tweezers
  • sharp scissors
  • safety pins
  • disposable instant cold packs
  • calamine lotion
  • alcohol wipes or ethyl alcohol
  • thermometer
  • plastic gloves (at least 2 pairs)
  • flashlight and extra batteries
  • mouthpiece for administering CPR (can be obtained from your local Red Cross)
  • your list of emergency phone numbers
  • blanket (stored nearby)
After you have stocked your first-aid kits:
  • Read the entire first-aid manual so you'll understand how to use the contents of your kits. (If your children are old enough to understand, review with them as well.)

Be Prepared To Survive The Next Terrorist Attack Or Natural Disaster
SURVIVING DISASTER
HOW TO SURVIVE THE NEXT DISASTER
Despite the horrific loss of life from the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, so many more people survived than it was first feared. Many were able to escape, and the attacks were "still early by New York time" (according to one television commentator). This was wonderful news. But, let's look at the "survivors" who live in the immediate area and right around it.
Little has been said about the residents of downtown Manhattan and how their way of life was affected. We were all touched either physically or emotionally by this disaster - even those who lived across the country and across the world, even those who didn't personally know anyone who was hurt or lost. But these residents were affected in more ways than you may realize.
None of this is easy to cope with, but you can get through it so much easier and safer (and with fewer hysterics!) with a little preparation. Disasters happen all the time somewhere in the world. Are you ready if one hit your neighborhood next week? Find out what you need to do now before it is too late.
DISASTER PREPAREDNESS
You want to get through a disaster safely and with as little inconvenience as possible. For the long-term effects, you need to prepare like you would if you were leaving home for a vacation deep in the woods away from everything. For the short-term effects, you need to think first of safety. We'll use an earthquake as the example, and you need to think through the disaster that may affect your area of the country.

Should I buy a prepackaged first-aid kit or assemble my own? Prepackaged first-aid kits currently available are economical and contain many of the essential items. No one commercial product, however, will contain everything you need in your personalized family kit. So you can start with the prepackaged kit and add the extra items you require, or build your own from scratch. You'll also need to keep many of these same items in your medicine chest to treat your baby's everyday ups and downs. Do I need to assemble more than one first-aid kit? It all depends on your needs and your lifestyle. You may want a mega-kit for homebase, a mini-kit for your purse / backpack / diaper bag, and one for the car that goes with you whenever you travel. For safety's sake, store all kits in a lunch or tackle box or a zippered bag and out of reach of curious babies and children. Any item in a first-aid kit can be hazardous if left in a child's hands.
