Peer Review Status: Internally Peer Reviewed First aid is the emergency care and treatment of a sick or injured person before professional medical services are obtained. FIRST AID MEASURES ARE NOT MEANT TO REPLACE PROPER MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT , but will only consist of providing temporary support until professional medical assistance is available. The purposes of first aid are (1) to save life, (2) prevent further injury, and (3) to minimize or prevent infection. Everyone in the Navy must know how and when to render first aid and be prepared to provide competent assistance to the sick and injured in all circumstances. The knowledge of first aid, when properly applied, can mean the difference between temporary or permanent injury, rapid recovery or long-term disability, and the difference between life and death. While administering first aid, the three primary objectives are (1) to maintain an open airway, (2) maintain breathing, and (3) to maintain circulation. During this process you will also control bleeding, and reduce or prevent shock. You must respond rapidly, stay calm, and think before you act. Do not waste time looking for ready-made materials, do the best you can with what is at hand. Request professional medical assistance as soon as possible.

Wikipedia does not give medical advice. If any such situations arise, seek the help of a medical expert. Wilderness first aid is the provision of first aid (q.v.) under conditions where the arrival of emergency responders or the evacuation of an injured person may be delayed due to constraints of terrain, weather, and available equipment. It may be necessary to care for an injured person for several hours or days. Wilderness First Aid (WFA) is the name of a certification in Wilderness Medicine that covers wilderness first aid; depending on the laws applicable where it is practiced, it may impose specific responsibilities and confer specific immunities on duly-diligent practitioners. For instance, the practicing of certain rules of WFA, by someone certified in the usual "street" First Aid discipline but not in WFA (or a higher Wilderness Medicine qualification), could result in civil liability or perhaps even criminal prosecution.

    What is a bruise?
You fall off your bike, bang your shin on the coffee table (that you swore you would move months ago) or run into a wall and wake up with a wallop of a bruise. What is a bruise and what can you do about it? A bruise, or contusion, is caused when blood vessels are damaged or broken as the result of a blow to the skin (be it bumping against something or hitting yourself with a hammer). The raised area of a bump or bruise results from blood leaking from these injured blood vessels into the tissues as well as from the body's response to the injury. A purplish, flat bruise that occurs when blood leaks out into the top layers of skin is referred to as an ecchymosis. Why do bruises occur more frequently in some people than in others? The injury required to produce a bruise varies with age. While it may take quite a bit of force to cause a bruise in a young child, even minor bumps and scrapes may cause extensive bruising or ecchymosis in an elderly person. Blood vessels become more fragile as we age and bruising may even occur without prior injury in the elderly. What does a bruise look like and why does it change color?

We pack our kit with the attitude of "hope for the best & prepare for the worst." Our kit is large and supports us around the house, as well as on extended trips. We purchased our base kit for a little under $100CDN; A little pricey, but it's advertised as being "developed for groups of 1 to 10 people on trips of 1 to 21 days." We have since augmented it with a number of other items, leaving us prepared, we hope, for most small to medium emergency situations. The pack weighs over a kilogram, roughly 2½ pounds, and is really stuffed at 30 cm x 18 cm x 18 cm/12" x 7" x 7". (This is all part of the "prepare for the worst" part; We can't be sure how many people we will be on a trip with, and just how serious any accident may be.) Of course, our kit isn't ready for every possibility. If you can think of something useful that can be added, we encourage you to let us know ; The item you suggest could save someone's life. Dr Kellons Guide to First Aid for Horses > Customer Review #1: Essential for the Responsible Owner/Rider/Caretaker

Dr. Eleanor Kellon has written a concise, well-organized, and comprehensive guide for first aid treatment in emergencies that warrant a call to the veterinarian. She organizes injuries and conditions into major categories such as wounds/bleeding, burns, colic, lameness, heat stoke, head/neck/eyes, shock, foaling/newborns, and drug reactions. This allows the reader to quickly and easily access the pertinent chapters. Within each of these categories, she identifies the items for a first aid kit, further defines specific conditions/injuries, explains the symptoms or causes, and outlines the first aid treatment. Dr. Kellon also rates the emergency nature of each condition/ injury. The guide also contains useful appendices (general signs of serious illness, signs of adequate tranquilization, bandaging, giving injections, administering eye medications).
