General First Aid
Introduction Nordic Ski-ing is not in itself an intrinsically accident prone activity although it is difficult to compare reported accidents rates between nordic and resort based ski-ing activities. In ski centres Doctors expect ski-ing accidents and record injuries which result from them accordingly, elsewhere the system is less likely to pick them up. The Aviemore practice has, however, started to look at nordic ski injuries and has suggested that as telemark techniques become more popular and speed and steepness of descents increase injuries may rise. Using the appropriate gear and being aware of the dangers are the best protection from injuries directly attributably to ski-ing.
Basic Rules of First Aid
General Procedures for Accident Response
  • Calmly take control of the situation:
Keep your head and don't panic, hasty actions can be fatal.

What's In A Well-Stocked First Aid Kit? By Paul Auerbach, MD. General Advice
    Contents
No youth sports team or competition should be without a first aid kit designed to treat the most common injuries and illnesses that might be encountered. General Advice
    • Match the contents to the sport: The type of first aid that may be required varies by sport. Because bruises, abrasions, and sprained ankles are more common in baseball, a baseball team's first aid kit, for instance, needs to be stocked with cold packs, elastic bandages, and Band-Aids, while a track team's kit needs to have plenty of supplies to treat blisters, abrasions, pulled muscles, and sprains. If your team is going to be in the sun, carry sunscreen; the cross-country coach needs to carry an allergy kit to manage bee stings.

At some time, virtually every family encounters a medical emergency. Knowing what to do can literally spell the difference between life and death. This is especially true when young children are involved; in fact, accidents are by far the leading cause of death among children of all ages. This section describes the most common medical emergencies involving children and outlines the basic first aid procedures recommended by leading medical organizations, such as the American Red Cross, National Safety Council and American Heart Association. Although specific first-aid procedures vary according to the nature of the emergency, there are some general guidelines that apply across the board. These include: Be prepared.
Obviously, it's impossible to predict where or when an emergency will develop. Thus, all parents should familiarize themselves with the basics of administering first aid in the common emergency situations presented here. In addition, you should:
    Assume a preventive attitude.
