Introduction to First Aid Document Number: 207
Levels of Training
In the workplace it is often the job of a Certified First Aid Provider to assist in stabilizing an injured or ill person until professional medical help arrives. Certified First Aid Providers are persons who are certified and trained to certain levels in first aid and CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation). 29 CFR 1910.151(b) states, "In the absence of an infirmary, clinic or hospital in the near proximity of the workplace which is used for the treatment of all injured employees, a person or persons shall be adequately trained to render first aid. First aid supplies approved by the consulting physician shall be readily available."

First Aid 29 CFR 1910.151 and
Summary of Z308.1-2003 Document Number: 208
In 1998 the Medical Services and First Aid regulation, 29 CFR 1910-151, was revised. The revision states, "in the absence of an infirmary, clinic, or hospital in near proximity to the workplace which is used for the treatment of all injured employees, a person or persons shall be adequately trained to render first aid. Adequate first aid supplies shall be readily available." The revised regulation eliminated the statement, ". . . first aid supplies approved by the consulting physician shall be readily available." In addition to the regulation was Appendix Aa non-mandatory guideline. This appendix demonstrates an example of the minimal contents of generic first aid kits according to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Z308.1-1978, Minimum Requirements for Industrial Unit-Type First Aid Kits.* The contents listed in Z308.1-1978 should be adequate for small worksites. The employer is responsible for determining the need for additional first-aid kits, quantities and the types of supplies at the worksite for large/larger worksites.

First Aid Governing Regulations The provision of first-aid at the University is governed by the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981(i). This Safety Procedure describes the organisation arrangements made to comply with these Regulations. Responsibility for provision of first-aid facilities Responsibility for the provision of first-aid facilities, the selection of persons to be trained as first-aiders and the identification of 'appointed persons' rests with the persons named in Section 2.3 of the General Policy. Number of first aiders required The appropriate numbers of first-aiders required in each building or other workplace are determined by the Occupational Health Sub- Committee.
The numbers are shown in Appendix 1. Appointed persons In some areas where there is a low risk assessment, where there are few persons employed or it has not been possible to identify a suitable volunteer, the head of department must nevertheless appoint a person to be responsible for the first aid facilities.
These 'appointed persons' will not have any responsibility for providing first-aid treatment.

First aid and safety tips: Ouch! That bite stings! Spring isn’t the only thing in the air–insects are everywhere! No matter what outside activity you plan to do, chances are you won’t go far without meeting some form of insect. In most cases, insect bites or stings are annoying but not particularly dangerous. However, in some instances, an allergic reaction can become serious and even life threatening. St. John Ambulance, Canada’s leader in first aid training and products, says it’s wise to know what to do should an insect bite or sting you. First Aid for an insect bite or sting 1. Examine the sting site closely, looking for the stinger that may still be in the skin. 2. If a stinger is visible and accessible, attempt to remove it by carefully scraping it and the attached poison sac from the skin. Don’t use tweezers, fingers or anything that might squeeze more poison into the body. 3. To reduce the irritation at the site of the sting, apply rubbing alcohol or a paste of baking soda and water. Ice can also be used. Never use alcohol near the eyes. 4. If the sting is in the mouth, give the person a mouthwash of one teaspoonful of baking soda in a glass of water, or a piece of ice to suck on. Monitor the casualty for swelling or difficulty breathing. If symptoms occur, get medical help.
