Quiet Disasters: House Fires Destroy Lives Every Day
Posted on Thu, 12 Apr 2001 12:34:36 GMT Written by Christina Ward , Staff Writer, DisasterRelief.org Hurricanes make headlines. So do earthquakes, tornadoes, floods and volcanoes. Major disasters such as these remind us of the shocking power of nature to damage and destroy. Cover-story images of major quake damage, or looming twisters on the horizon, stop us in our tracks; we pause from our daily routine to marvel at their frightening effects. Meanwhile, smaller disasters — such as house fires — occur so frequently, often in our own neighborhoods, that they are sometimes overlooked. Except, of course, by the victims themselves. When a house or apartment goes up in flames, it is no less terrifying to residents than a deadly tornado touching down. Both leave lives in shambles. For a family who has lost a loved one in a fire, the effect is devastating.
A family awaits news about damage after a fire raced through their home. Sobering Statistics Cumulatively, residential fires do represent a major disaster, along the lines of a violent earthquake or large-scale hurricane. Nearly 5,000 Americans die each year in fires, and 80 percent of those deaths result from home fires, according to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA). Fire kills more Americans each year than all natural disasters combined.

According to the information, in the first four months of the year, there were 6,169 fires in the province, killing 118 people and injuring 124 others, all of which went up by 40 percent on a year-on-year basis. The fires also caused 24.4 million yuan (US$2.94 million) in direct losses. In May alone, another 14 people were added to the death toll because of fresh fires most of which took place in residential quarters, said the sources. A leading local fire control officer emphasized the necessity of stepping up publicity on fire control and of spreading common knowledge about how to prevent fire disasters at home in daily life and to survive similar disasters. Guangdong Province, one of China's economic powerhouses, has been benefited the most by the country's reform and opening-up drive. It has become a global base for processing trade and a key foreign trade player in China.

    Fire: Ballantyne's
When: 18 November, 1947 Where: Ballantyne's Department Store, Christchurch What happened:
    • Most of the upper floors were staff work areas, including the dress-making department, and the credit and accounting department. At 3.31 pm on 18 November, 1947, one of the salesmen employed in the store was told by a woman employee that smoke was coming up the stairs. The smoke was coming from the cellar of Congreve's Building which was beneath the furnishing department, but there were no flames and no sound of burning. He told the woman to call the fire brigade and tell the owners. The salesman was beginning to get concerned when some minutes later the fire brigade had still not arrived. He worked with other members of the staff to place fire extinguishers at the bottom of the stairs. Upstairs the owners, Kenneth and Roger Ballantyne, had been told about the fire, but there was some uncertainty whether the call to the fire brigade had been made. Another call was made to be certain. The call was received at the fire station at 3.46 pm.
