Hänen vanhempansa olivat Rosa ja Jalmari Törni. Laurilla oli myös kaksi nuorempaa sisarusta sekä vanhempi veli. Laurin isä Jalmari Törni oli ammatiltaan rannikkoaluksen kapteeni, joka seilasi Suomenlahden merialueella. Törnin perhe oli yleisen mittapuun mukaan varakas ja hyvin toimeentuleva. He omistivat 16 huonetta käsittävän talon ja vuokrasivat huoneita lapsiperheille. Yksi vuokralaisista oli tunnetun olympianyrkkeilijä Sten Suvion veli. Hän sai Laurin kiinnostumaan nyrkkeilystä. Myöhemmin Lauri tunnettiin nyrkkeilevänä upseerina Suomen, Saksan ja Yhdysvaltain armeijoissa. Lauri sai kristillisen kasvatuksen ja oppi kunnioittamaan isänmaataan. Hänen isä kannusti ja opetti poikaansa useissa taitolajeissa esimerkiksi hiihdossa. Lauri ei ollut kovin kiinnostunut koulunkäynnistä, mutta sydämensä hän oli antanut puolustusvoimille. Lauri Allan Törni vannoi sotilasvalan Suomen armeijalle 8. lokakuuta 1938. Varusmiespalvelustaan hän jatkoi reserviupseerikoulussa talvisodan alkuun saakka. Törni näytti heti sodan alkaessa kykynsä suomalaisena taistelijana. Törnin joukko-osasto herätti kunnioitusta molemmin puolin rintamaa. These languages form a subdivision of the Uralic subfamily of the Ural-Altaic family of languages (see Uralic and Altaic languages ). Finnish is spoken by about 5 million people in Finland. Additional speakers totaling close to 1 million live in neighboring areas of Sweden and Russia and also in the United States. There are several dialects. In Finnish the first syllable of a word is stressed. The language has 15 cases for nouns, personal pronouns, and adjectives. It lacks grammatical gender and the article. There is a negative conjugation for the verb. Like the other Uralic and Altaic languages, Finnish has vowel harmony and agglutination. Postpositions are employed instead of prepositions. Suffixation is used to form derived nouns and verbs. The Finnish vocabulary has been enriched by words borrowed from the Germanic, Slavic, and Baltic languages.
