At the beginning of the 19th century Finnish had no official status, since Swedish was the language of education, government, and literature in Finland. The publication of the Kalevala , a national epic poem, in 1835, contributed greatly to the arousal of Finnish national and linguistic feeling.

A nation of five million people, Finland is situated between West and East, between Sweden and Russia, sharing for thousands of years religious, historical, political, social, and cultural influences and experiences with its neighbours and the different worlds they represent. Finnish studies at the University of Toronto are presently engaged in teaching the Finnish language - a three-year sequence together with a linguistics course, to be introduced later, that will be of interest to all students of language - and in offering other courses on the literature and culture of Finland. Lord of the Rings Inspired by an Ancient Epic Brian Handwerk
for National Geographic News
Updated March 1, 2004 Generations of readers have cherished Middle-earth, the fantasy universe sprung from the mind of storyteller J.R.R. Tolkien. His magical world has been brought to life in the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, the third of which, The Return of the King, swept every category it was nominated for at the Academy Awards ceremony last night. The movie most notably won Oscars for Best Picture and Directing, among 9 others. While the author's imagination was vast, Tolkien's world and its cast of characters do have roots in real-world history and geography, from the world wars that dominated Tolkien's lifetime to the ancient language and legends of Finland. Anthropologist and ethnobotanist Wade Davis traveled to a remote corner of Finland to uncover Tolkien influences that stretch back into the misty past of northern Europe.

THE PHRASEBASE APPROACH
Many studies show that in most countries, native-speakers only tend to use about unique words and phrases on a daily basis. The question then becomes... which words and phrases? Phrasebase answers this question.
In 1997, I was sent to Japan on an overseas assignment while working for a major software corporation. With a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, I was never required to take a single class in a language other than English. And having been raised in Middle America, I never had any exposure to foreign languages.
Yet, I found myself suddenly living and working in Tokyo, Japan, and confronted head on with a language barrier that hindered my most simple, routine and everyday activities.
Jeff Hock in Tokyo, Japan 1997 Seizing the challenge as an opportunity, I started carrying a notebook and pen everywhere I went. Each day when faced with the slightest problem trying to convey an idea or communicate a thought, I simply wrote it down.
Then right there on the spot, I entered the phrase and had a friend help me enter the corresponding Japanese equivalence. Without knowing it at the time, I was actually learning to write in

    The Finnish Language
I've been asked by an e-mailer what's so hard about the Finnish language. While I can't go into the full details I think I can pretty briefly give a sense of how ridiculous it really is. 1) It has fifteen cases which are expressed as suffixes (bits added onto the ends of words). While some of the cases have fairly defined meanings that are logical once you get inside the language, several of them are used in what can only be described as an idiosyncratic manner. An example is the elative case which has the ending -sta. This normally corresponds to the idea of going away from somewhere (pankki = bank, pankista = from the bank). Nothing so hard about that except that sometimes it just goes with the object of certain verbs. For example "Min¤ pid¤n sinusta" means "I like you" where "sinusta" is the elative form of "sin¤" meaning "you". Six of the cases work like this. 2) The stem of the words undergo radical changes. If it was just a case of adding the suffix to the end of the word it wouldn't be so bad, you could at least form the words logically. Unfortunately, as with the word "sin¤" in the above example, the stem changes. If it were just a case of adding the ending "sin¤" would become "sin¤st¤" in the elative but it doesn't. There are rules for these stem changes but they're quite complicated and it makes using a dictionary hell.
