Customer Reviews I just had to loan this book from the local library to see if the reviews here were at all accurate. They are. I'm not sure what the aim of this book is. Is it to give Finnish-Americans with an interest in new age gibberish some sort of connection to mythic, mystic past? That's my theory, because it certainly doesn't have much to do with bonafide Finnish history or culture. The authors carelessly intermingle Sami and Finnish cultural traditions, misspell or misuse Finnish words, and even worse, create something of a mockery of Finnish culture by creating this bizarre, frankly non-existent mismash of cultures and positing it as "Finnish". All I can say in conclusion is that I wish I could get back the time I wasted reading this horrid book. I dropped this book on the floor, the minute this supposed scholar wrote Lapp. First of all, the correct term is Sami. Secondly, if you want a decent book on the Sami, don't look here. I picked up a good book while in Snasa,Norway at a Sami museum. If you want authentic information, get it directly from the source!

The Kvens - a newly discovered minority in Ruija (Northern Norway)
From Ullsfjorden (click the pictures for a bigger image) f old have the Kvens lived in the Land of Ruija on the coast of the Arctic Ocean. The Kvens are Finnish-speaking people who are living in the land which they call Ruija that is Northern Norway today. The word kven was known already in the ninth century and the Kven People live scattered in the Land of Ruija both on the coast and in the valleys of Ruija and in Swedish and Finnish Lapland. Map of Kveeniland There were small Kven villages between the Lapps and the Sami People. About 200 - 300 years ago a large number of Finns immigrated into the Land of Ruija and in this way the Finnish- speaking population increased considerably. Today the number of Kvens is estimated to be about 5000 - 8000 people and recently the President of the Sami Parliament has agreed to co-operate with the Kvens. The Sami People have also had to suffer from the Norwegian policy of assimilation, which the the new government, fortunately, seems to have rejected.
From the Saana- lake
The Land of Ruija (that is Lapland for English-speakers) is the name that the Kvens gave to their homeland. The Kvens and Kven culture are, therefore, a mixture of the old Kvens and the newer immigrants.

Finnish Immigration The Finnish people came to America for a variety of reasons. Some of the Finns didn't agree with the Swedish law that stated you couldn't clear land by burning the trees, a practice they had always used. Other Finns wanted affordable land for farming, but there was no land available for them in Finland. Still other Finns wanted to live in big cities such as New York and Chicago. In America, both men and women could earn higher salaries for the same work they did in Finland. The men worked in jobs such as logging, mining, and building railroads. Women never had the opportunity in Finland to earn wages, but in America they could be employed in mills, factories, or hired as house keepers and maids.

The year 1998 will mark the centennial of the birth of Alvar Aalto, the renowned Finnsh architect and designer who died twenty years ago and is immortalized by the fifty-Finnmark bank note which bears his portrait and a picture of Finlandia Hall in Helsinki. Already, plans are underway for national and international events in observance of the centennial including exhibitions, conferences, publications (electronic and printed), a design competition and even building restorations. The considerable interest in Finland and abroad is indicative of Aalto's important historical position. In his lifetime he achieved international recognition, and his place in the pantheon of 20th-century modernists remains secure. If praise from members of one's profession is a measure of success, then Aalto scores high: Frank Lloyd Wright called him a genius after visiting the Finnish Pavilion at the 1939 New York World's Fair, and

Respondents (20 from each group) were asked to describe along ten dimensions of values and life-style: (1) their national stereotypes of Finns and Finland and (2) their own trans-cultural self-identifications, in comparison with other peoples and cultures. Many traits were considered "genuinely Finnish", yet an overall pattern of "Finnishness" with German working morale, "Nordic" official behavior, "Byzantine" politics and Western European lifestyle and arts emerged. Older intellectuals emphasized the Eastern (Russian) traits of Finnish values and life-style, while younger intellectuals were more oriented to American and general cosmopolitan ways of life. Keywords: intellectuals, values and life-styles, national stereotypes, transcultural self identification
