Print version Geography of Sweden Despite its small population and large area, Sweden is a technologically advanced country with good infrastructure, including an efficient transportation and communications system. Geographically speaking, it is characterized by its long coastlines, large forests and numerous lakes. Sweden is one of the countries on earth located furthest from the Equator. It extends from north to south at roughly the same latitude as Alaska or – in the Southern Hemisphere – the stretch of ocean between Cape Horn in South America and the Antarctic continent. In terms of area it is similar to Spain, Thailand or California. In population, it is in the same league as Belgium, Ecuador or New Jersey. A land of ancient bedrock, Sweden was settled later than most countries; yet its national government has relatively old roots. By the 16th century Sweden had evolved into a strongly centralized nation, with Stockholm as its capital. The size of the country has changed over the centuries: Finland was part of Sweden until 1809. What is now southern and western Sweden was conquered in 1658 from the then Danish-Norwegian union. During certain periods Sweden also had provinces on the southern and eastern shores of the Baltic Sea, and even colonies in North America and the West Indies. In 1905, a nearly century-old union with Norway was dissolved, but since 1812 Sweden's borders have been unchanged and the country has been spared from war since 1814.

    Introduction
Ruled by Sweden from the 12th to the 19th centuries and by Russia from 1809, Finland finally won its independence in 1917. During World War II, it was able to successfully defend its freedom and fend off invasions by the Soviet Union and Germany. In the subsequent half century, the Finns have made a remarkable transformation from a farm/forest economy to a diversified modern industrial economy; per capita income is now on par with Western Europe. As a member of the European Union, Finland was the only Nordic state to join the euro system at its initiation in January 1999.

Map from used by permission of Microsoft Corporation. Higher Education. The Finnish education system consists of comprehensive school, post-compulsory general and vocational education, higher education and adult education. Comprehensive school provides a nine-year educational program beginning at the age of seven. Post-compulsory education is given by general upper secondary schools (three years) and vocational institutions (two to three years). Higher education is provided by 20 universities and 29 polytechnics. The total university enrollment is currently 157,000 students, of which more than 3,700 are students from abroad studying for a degree. The number of international visiting students at the Finnish universities is about 3,500 per year. Since university higher education is funded by the State through the Ministry of Education, students enrolled in regular degree programs pay no tuition fees. The unit by which study progress is measured is the credit (opintoviikko). One credit is awarded for approximately 40 hours of work. One semester of full-time study is usually worth 15 - 20 credits. The minimum requirement for a Bachelor's degree is 120 credits. In most cases, the Master's degree requires 160 credits. Instruction and coursework is mainly carried out in Finnish or Swedish, depending on the university. However, Finland's universities offer a wide array of international study programs taught in English and other foreign languages to promote international educational exchange - at the moment there are approximately 200 study programs taught in English at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Some of these are short courses which can be taken as part of an exchange program. Others, which are more broadly based, take several years to complete and lead to a recognized qualification.

Neva Project home Project description Maps The Sites ... The New Directions Initiative THE NEVA PROJECT: SITE 4 Geography of Lake Ladoga Known in ancient times as Lake Nevo, Lake Ladoga received its modern name in the thirteenth century from the town of Ladoga (now called Staraia Ladoga, or Old Ladoga), which is on the Volkhov River, just upstream from the lake.
The northern shore of Lake Ladoga is a wild terrain of skerries and fjords. It is a popular vacation site for Finns, who consider the area their ancient homeland. A national park is proposed for this region The region around Lake Ladoga (known in ancient times as Lake Nevo) was settled between 6000 and 5000 B.C.E. by tribes known as proto-Lapps. In addition to the lands of modern Finland and Karelia, they lived on the southern shore of Ladoga and along the Volkhov, Neva and Svir rivers. Archaeological finds from the 1870s include stone and bone instruments from the Neolithic era. During construction of the New Ladoga Canal, an ancient boat gouged from an oak was unearthed at a depth of 5m. Around 3000 B.C.E. the precursors of the Volgo-Finnish peoples settled in the region, succeeded by a Finno-Ugric tribe known as the Izhora people. This tribe inhabited the lands southwest of Lake Ladoga and gave their name to the Izhora River that flows into the Neva from the south.

Economic Geography as a subject at the universities is an integral part of the geography. The essential character of the geographic research can’t be defined on basis of the research subjects but on basis of the approach and perspective to the subject being researched. The general character of the geography is the spatial approach to the studied phenomena, while the most essential terms regardless of the study subject are Area, Place and Location. Within this framework there are numberless research subjects and a great variation of research methods.
