Fennia primarily publishes original papers of scholarly merit which are geographically connected with Finland or concern topics discussed in geographical research of Finnish origin. Fennia was first published in 1889. Volumes 1-100 were published irregularly one or two a year, each volume containing several contributions. Volumes 101-147 (1971-1976) contained only one contribution each. Volumes 148-156 were made up of 1-9 papers each, still published irregularly. From volume 157 onwards, Fennia has been published annually as one volume consisting of two issues. Each issue contains several contributions. Editorial address Department of Geography, P.O. It finally won its complete independence in 1917. During World War II, it was able to successfully defend its freedom and resist invasions by the Soviet Union - albeit with some loss of territory. In the subsequent half century, the Finns made a remarkable transformation from a farm/forest economy to a diversified modern industrial economy; per capita income is now on par with Western Europe. As a member of the European Union, Finland was the only Nordic state to join the euro system at its initiation in January 1999.

Notes on the history and the present task of Nordia Geographical Publications
It was almost six years ago that the last volume (Vol. 23) of Nordia, A Journal of the Geographical Society of Northern Finland, was published. After 1989 the management board of the Geographical Society of Northern Finland concluded that it was too difficult, for financial reasons, to continue publishing the journal. Nordia was 'put on ice' until further notice.
In autumn 1994, the Geographical Society of Northern Finland and the Department of Geography at the University of Oulu made a decision to publish in co-operation, and thus were born two series of publications. One of them is Nordia Geographical Publications, which is, in a sense, the revived Nordia (in fact, the first annual volume of NGP is Vol. 24).
In addition to our two (or three if required) annual issues, a YEARBOOK is published in Nordia Geographical Publications. There are three major aims for the YEARBOOK: firstly to present a cross-section of the works done in geography and by geographers in Northern Finland, secondly to publish collections of articles dealing with various current areas of interest and themes in geography, and thirdly to publish papers presented in the symposia arranged by the Department of Geography of the University of Oulu or by the Geographical Society of Northern Finland.

Geography Land of lakes and forests Finland is the fifth largest country in the European Union (EU) and is the most northerly state on the mainland of Europe. Approximately 130,500 square miles (338,000 sq. km), Finland is similar in size to the state of Montana. However, it is narrower and longer with 690 miles (1100 km) stretching between its southern and northern tips. Thousands of islands and small cliffs dot the southern and southwestern coast of Finland in the Baltic Sea. Åland, the most recognizable set of islands, is located between Finland and Sweden and boasts more than 6,500 isles and islands. Many important relics of the Stone, Iron and Bronze Ages have been found there. .
