DNA Fingerprinting
It is widely known that each individual has a DNA profile as unique as a fingerprint. Actually, over 99% of all 3 billion nucleotides in human DNA which we inherit from each parent are identical among all individuals. However, for every 1000 nucleotides that we inherit there is 1 site of variation or polymorphism, in the population. These DNA polymorphisms change the length of the DNA fragments produced by the digestion of restriction enzymes . The resulting fragments are called restriction fragments length polymorphisms (RFLP's"riflips"). Gel electrophoresis can be used to separate and determine the size of the RFLPs. The exact number and size of fragments produced by a specific restriction enzyme digestion varies from individual to individual.
DNA fingerprinting has proved valuable, not only for convicting felons and exonerating the innocent, but also for establishing maternity or paternity and proving family relationships. More exotic uses include the identification of missing children in Argentina, soldiers killed in war, and even the body of Nazi physician Joseph Mengele, the so-called "Angel of Death."

Note: for "digital fingerprints" see Message digest A fingerprint is an imprint made by the pattern of ridges on the pad of a human finger. These prints are often left on objects at a crime scene and are therefore used in forensic science to identify suspects. No two humans have ever been found to have identical fingerprints, thus fingerprints are widely believed to be unique. The tip of a finger showing the fingerprint. Fingerprints are an early example of biometrics , the science of identifying individuals by their physical characteristics. There is no clear date at which fingerprinting was first used, some examples being from prehistory. However, some significant modern dates are as follows.
  • - Sir Edward Richard Henry devised the Henry Classification System used in England and Wales. - Dr. Henry P. DeForrest used fingerprinting in the New York Civil Service.
Sometimes the prints are invisible, in which case they are called latent fingerprints , but there are chemical techniques such as cyanoacrylate fuming and ninhydrin spray that can make them visible.

Genetic Fingerprinting was developed by Professor Alec Jeffreys at the University of Leicester in 1984. The technique is based on the fact that each of us has a unique genetic make-up, contained in the molecule DNA, which is inherited from our natural parents, half from our mother and half from our father. DNA can be extracted from cells and body fluids and analysed to produce a characteristic pattern of bands or genetic 'fingerprint'. The sketch below shows how genetic fingerprinting can be used to identify a child's father. Equally important has been the use of genetic fingerprinting in rape cases, where the semen of the attacker and alleged attacker can be compared. It is usual to compare between 10 and 20 bands. Experimental evidence has shown that in unrelated people the probability of one band matching is one in four So for example, the probability of two bands matching = 0.0625 or a in chance. Problem 1 Find the probability of bands matching. Express your answer in the form "1 in ? chance" Problem 2 Repeat Problem 1, but using 0.5 as the probability of any single band matching.

DNA Fingerprinting using VNTR's
On some human chromosomes, a short sequence of DNA has been repeated a number of times. In any particular chromosomes the repeat number may vary from one to thirty repeats. Since these repeat regions are usually bounded by specific restriction enzyme sites, it is possible to cut out the segment of the chromosome containing this variable number of tandem repeats or VNTR's , run the total DNA on a gel, and identify the VNTR's by hybridization with a probe specific for the DNA sequence of the repeat. Shown to the right at the top are the chromosomes of the two parental individuals of the pedigree below. The first individual has one chromosome with 4 repeated sequences and one chromosome with 6 repeated sequences. The other individual has one chromosome with 3 repeated sequences and one chromosome with 5 repeated sequences. At the bottom of the figure is a pedigree of the mating between these two individuals and their four children. The DNA of each of the individuals has been analyzed for the VNTR repeat number and the gels are show below each individual along with the genotype for each individual. Notice that each of the six people are distinguishable from each other by the VNTR's at this one genetic locus. If several VNTR loci were used, the uniqueness of each individual would become even more distinct. VNTR analysis of the Romanov remains

SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) In the second incident of its kind in three weeks, an American was arrested Friday after making an obscene gesture while being fingerprinted and photographed at a Brazilian airport as part of the entry requirements for U.S. citizens. Douglas A. Skolnick, a retired bank worker from New Jersey, raised his middle finger while going through the new entry requirement at the international airport in Foz de Iguacu, a southeastern resort town famous for its massive waterfalls, said Marcos Koren, a federal police spokesman. Police accused Skolnick of showing contempt to authorities, the same crime in Brazil that netted American Airlines pilot Dale Robin Hersh a 36,000 reals ($12,750) fine on January 14 after he lifted his middle finger while entering Brazil. The airline paid the fine, and Hersh was sent back to the United States.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) U.S. citizens waited for hours Monday to be photographed and fingerprinted, part of a new requirement for them to enter Brazil. The requirement which went into effect on January 1 came in response to the new U.S. anti-terror regulation that requires foreigners from all but 28 countries to be fingerprinted and photographed when entering the United States. "It's been pretty much an all day experience," said Claire Fallender, a 27-year-old American sociologist from Boston. "As far as reciprocity, Brazil has every right to do this. The only problem is without the technology to process people, it's causing frustration and losing the point of protesting American policy." Fallender said she had been waiting at the airport for five hours, while others had been there nearly seven hours waiting to be processed.

The Brazilian measures in place since January 1 have delayed U.S. travelers in airports for up to nine hours. A judge ordered them after the United States announced it would begin fingerprinting travelers arriving from other countries, including Brazil. An order making the Brazilian measures an official government policy will be released Monday, TV Globo quoted government officials as saying. A draft of the one-page order was made public by Globo.com, the web site of Rio de Janeiro's O Globo newspaper. The order also sets up a team of officials from the justice and foreign ministries to evaluate the procedures.

INFOCUS Footprints in the Sand: Fingerprinting Exploits in System and Application Log Files
by Alan Neville Eric Hines with additional research by Joseph Kelly
    last updated October 10, 2002
Introduction Forensic analysts and incident response engineers are armed with a slew of open source and commercial forensic toolsets to attempt to understand and analyze break-ins they did not witness. The most critical component of forensic analysis is system log files. In particular, the analyst must be able to understand and recognize footprints that exploits leave on system logfiles. Identifying these signatures, and their impact on the application within the log files, is the key to understanding what took place during a security incident. This paper will focus on the identification of the footprints that exploits leave on system logfiles and what they mean, as well as the most common traces that some recent exploits leave. It is hoped that this discussion will help to create a set of methodologies for readers to follow when conducting incident response and forensic analysis, thereby introducing readers to the world of forensic analysis using system and application log files as an evidentiary resource in place of intrusion detection systems.

From staff and wire reports CLARKSBURG, West Virginia (CNN) A $640 million electronic database of fingerprints will help police around the country decide within hours whether a suspect should be freed on bail or held in custody, FBI officials said Tuesday. Instead of waiting more than 20 days for critical information, judges and law enforcement agencies in 15 states now can uncover a suspect's identity and criminal history before leaving the courthouse. All 50 states are expected to be connected to the system within the next few years. "Timely identification information is particularly crucial in instances where a person has been charged with a crime and is awaiting a bail hearing," said FBI Director Louis Freeh in a statement.

When someone with half a clue decides to attack your system, he or she will first try to identify the operating system. Not every attack proceeds this way: Script kiddies probe huge address spaces looking for any system with a particular port open, which indicates that just maybe that system will be vulnerable. But for the professional penetration tester or hacker, identifying the operating system is an essential step in probing. My September 2000 column ( "ICMP Stands for Trouble" ) discussed the use of Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) packets for probing and for detecting operating system types. Since that time, an interesting paper on the subject has been updated by its author, Ofir Arkin. The update includes new tricks for operating system identification (see
