Prints are said to make libraries more efficient
Tens of thousands of children are being fingerprinted in school - often without the consent of their parents, a human rights group has complained. Prints are taken for a library lending system which the makers say makes lending more efficient and less vulnerable to abuse. But the pressure group Privacy International says the practice is illegal and breaches the human right to privacy. Dangerous One of the makers of the technology, Micro Librarian Systems (MLS), say they have sold about 1,000 systems to schools in the UK and abroad. One mother from London told BBC News Online she was horrified when her son came home and told her he had been finger-printed at his primary school. She said: "I consider that this was an infringement of my son's civil rights and a breach of trust on the part of the school. "This should not have been done at all, and certainly not without our consent, or indeed knowledge.

The technique relies on electrical signals in the brain A controversial technique for identifying a criminal mind using involuntary brainwaves that could reveal guilt or innocence is about to take centre stage in a last-chance court appeal against a death-row conviction in the US.
The technique, called "brain fingerprinting", has already been tested by the FBI and has now become part of the key evidence to overturn the murder conviction of Jimmy Ray Slaughter who is facing execution in Oklahoma. Brain Fingerprinting, developed by Dr Larry Farwell, chief scientist and founder of Brain Fingerprinting Laboratories, is a method of reading the brain's involuntary electrical activity in response to a subject being shown certain images relating to a crime. Unlike the polygraph or lie detector to which it is often compared, the accuracy of this technology lies in its ability to pick up the electrical signal, known as a p300 wave, before the suspect has time to affect the output.

    http://www.forensic-evidence.com/site/Behv_Evid/BeE00005_1.html
Updated July 2, 2000 Assumption: A person who has committed a crime has the details of that crime stored in his memory. What if there were to be discovered a method whereby the details stored in the brain could be retrieved....But can this be done?
Dr. Lawrence A. Farwell, along with several other researchers, founded a human brain research laboratory after Dr. Farwell postulated that, indeed, information stored in the brain can be revealed "with extremely high accuracy" by Farwell's brain-wave response measurement using a multifaceted electroencephalographic response. If we find the "guilty knowledge" stored in a person's brain, what do we have? Is this an Orwellian crime fighting tool? Perhaps all we have to do is drag suspects in, put them on the EEG machine and read their memory? Dr. Farwell suggests use of the term "Orwellian" is misplaced since Orwell's 1984 described a society in which innocent people were constantly in fear of an extremely controlling government that did not value the truth. His "brain fingerprinting" helps to eliminate this kind of fear and oppression, he suggests. Also, one cannot "drag suspects in" to test them because it is physically impossible to test someone who resists the test. According to Dr. Farwell, brain-wave data can be obtained only if a person sits reasonably still and looks at the computer screen. Is it "science"? Is this just another polygraph? We do not have the answers. However, with permission of its inventor, Dr. Lawrence A. Farwell, we are printing a

Brain-scans can defeat terrorism, InfoSeek founder claims
By Thomas C Greene in Washington Published Wednesday 3rd October 2001 20:57 GMT Just when you thought crowd surveillance with facial recognition gear was the sickest idea circulating, some naive do-gooder comes along with 'brain fingerprinting' to detect evil memories, loudly urging its use as a public security measure in the wake of the 11 September tragedies. Steve Kirsch, founder of InfoSeek and current CEO of data management outfit Propel Software , reckons that the relevant technology companies could deliver a working system of brain fingerprinting databases and a companion iris scanning system for (supposedly anonymous) identification reference in something like ninety days' time. And this will "infallibly" defeat terrorists, he fervently believes.
      How it works
Kirsch's mental intrusion scheme is based on 'multifaceted electroencephalographic response analysis' (MERA), an electronic form of phrenology promoted by BrainWave Science company President Larry Farwell, whose Gibson-esque self-promoting

    Facts
    • In the first step of AFLP analysis, genomic DNA is digested with both a restriction enzyme that cuts frequently ( Mse I, 4 bp recognition sequence) and one that cuts less frequently ( Eco RI, 6 bp recognition sequence).
    • The resulting fragments are ligated to end-specific adaptor molecules.
    • A preselective PCR amplification is done using primers complementary to each of the two adaptor sequences, except for the presence of one additional base at the 3' end. Which base is chosen by the user. Amplification of only 1/16th of Eco RI- Mse I fragments occurs.
  • In a second, "selective", PCR, using the products of the first as template, primers containing two further additional bases, chosen by the user, are used. The Eco RI-adaptor specific primer used bears a label (fluorescent or radioactive).
  • Gel electrophoretic analysis reveals a pattern (fingerprint) of fragments representing about 1/4000 th of the Eco RI- Mse I fragments.

    Filtering by Operating System
The goal of this work is to allow firewalling decisions to take place based not only on the source of a connection, but the operating system of that source.
    How?
Modern TCP stacks are complex beasts. Even those that were derived off the original BSD stacks have significantly diverged over the years. As a result, most stacks exhibit different nuances which can be detected and mapped back to the originating operating system. By fingerprinting the OS of a TCP SYN packet, we can expose the operating system to the filter language and live happily ever after.
    but, but, but...
An attacker can EASILY spoof the nuances to appear as any operating system he chooses so why is this useful? Passive fingerprinting is not then a security feature. But it still has utility as a policy feature. It allows the firewall administrator to treat different operating systems differently considering that most, if not all of his users will not know enough to masquerade as something else. Most email worms are propagated by Windows machines connecting to SMTP ports. I trust UNIX mail servers far more than Windows ones, so maybe I want to restrict Windows clients to a total of one connection to my SMTP port. Maybe I'm an ISP and want to limit the bandwidth of Windows SMTP traffic since it is more likely to be junk.

Brain-print test rejected; murder conviction stands
    By MARK SIEBERT
    Register Staff Writer
A Pottawattamie County judge refused Monday to overturn the murder conviction of Terry Harrington, who had argued that newly discovered brain-fingerprinting technology proved his innocence. Harrington, of Council Bluffs, was convicted in the 1977 killing of a security guard. His attorneys argued that witnesses had recanted their testimony and that defense attorneys had never been told of another suspect. They also contended that a new technology involving brain waves offered enough evidence for post-conviction relief. This new brain-fingerprinting test, developed by Lawrence Farwell of Fairfield, attracted widespread attention, including a piece on CBS's "60 Minutes." District Judge Timothy O'Grady dismissed the action Monday. The new evidence "is unlikely to change the result of the trial," O'Grady ruled. According to scientists, the human brain releases a positive electrical charge at the moment of recognition of a familiar object or idea. With the new technique, words or pictures relevant to a crime are flashed on a computer screen. A specially equipped headband measures the brain's responses. Farwell, of the Human Brain Research Laboratory in Fairfield, concluded from the tests that Harrington had a "lack of knowledge of significant details of the crime." Two tests showed his brain contained information consistent with his alibi, Farwell said.

    Welcome!
T his site is dedicated to the advancement of fine-scale population-level genetic analyses in natural populations, especially birds. My primary research interests concern the development of new molecular (especially AFLP) and analytical techniques to characterize genetic variation in spatially structured populations of lekking Neotropical birds. Although I am most interested in how dispersal barriers affect the genetic composition of White-bearded Manakins (family Pipridae) and various hummingbirds (family Trochilidae), I share some time investigating genetic processes in Combtooth Blennies (family Blenniidae) and Drosophila melanogaster . My motivation in creating this site was to provide a resource that would make available many of the protocols and tools I developed for my dissertation research. Although most of the information contained herein is referenced primarily to birds, I hope that other investigators will find this information useful in their own research. UPDATE!
