Return to Black Hill Information Home Page DAHL FINE ARTS CENTER 713 7th Street Rapid City, South Dakota 57701 The Dahl Center houses the unique 180 foot oil-on-canvas panorama spanning 200 years of U.S. history in the Cyclorama Gallery. Enhanced by special lighting and narration, this extraordinary art work was designed and painted by acclaimed muralist Bernard P. Thomas. In addition to the Cyclorama Gallery, the Center includes galleries for temporary exhibitions and sales. Artists from the area, region and nation are invited to participate in group and solo artist exhibitions. The schedule also includes national touring exhibitions. School and visitor tours of the Cyclorama Gallery and the Center are conducted throughout the year by volunteers and staff. The Center is a community arts facility which houses a 150 seat theater, arts organizations offices and classroom spaces. The Rapid City Arts Council, under contract with the city of Rapid City, has administered the Dahl Fine Arts Center since its opening in October, 1974. The Cyclorama Mural The Mural and its concept The Cyclorama mural depicts United States economic history from the time of the Europeans first landing on the eastern coast. This magnificent tribute to two hundred years of American history was a three year project for the artist. Two years were spent in his own community of Boyton Beach, Florida, where artist Thomas researched material and created the mural design. Installing the 180 x 10 foot canvas and painting at the Dahl Center consumed the third year.
