    Snuff Films
Written by: Also known as "white heat" films and "the real thing," the snuff film myth lives on like Bigfoot, despite the fact that no law enforcement agency in America has publicly admitted to ever locating one. Alan Sears, former executive director of the Attorney General's commission on pornography during 1985-86, agrees with the more than two dozen law enforcement agencies I interviewed. "Our experience was that we could not find any such thing as a commercially produced snuff film," says Sears. "Our commission was all-inclusive and exhaustive. If snuff films were available, we'd have found them." This sentiment is echoed by Ken Lanning, a cult expert at the FBI training academy at Quantico, Virginia. "I've not found one single documented case of a snuff film anywhere in the world. I've been searching for 20 years, talked to hundreds of people. There's plenty of once-removed sightings, but I've never found a credible personality who personally saw one."

Extensive look at the genre from the earliest silents to the present.
    http://www.filmsite.org/sci-fifilms.html
    S CIENCE F ICTION F ILMS
    S cience F iction F ilms
are a version of fantasy films . They are usually scientific, visionary, comic-strip-like, and imaginative - complete with heroes, distant planets, impossible quests, improbable settings, fantastic places, great dark and shadowy villains, futuristic technology, unknown and inexplicable forces, the dangerous nature of knowledge ('some things Man is not meant to know'), and extraordinary monsters ('things or creatures from space'), either created by misguided mad scientists or by nuclear havoc. Sci-fi tales have a prophetic nature (they often attempt to figure out or depict the future) and are often set in a future time. They are usually visualized through fanciful, imaginative settings, film production design, advanced technology gadgets (i.e., robots and spaceships), scientific developments, or by fantastic special effects. Commonly, sci-fi films express society's anxiety about technology and how to forecast and control the impact of technological and environmental change on contemporary society. Science fiction often expresses the potential of technology to destroy humankind through Armaggedon-like events, or through the loss of personal individuality. There are often encounters with other aliens, creatures, or beings (sometimes from our deep subconscious, sometimes in space or in other dimensions) that are unearthed to fight an eternal struggle or battle (good vs. evil), played out by recognizable archetypes. Many other SF films featured fantastic journeys, set either on Earth, into outer space, or (most often) into the future.

often acknowledge the horror and heartbreak of war, letting the actual combat fighting or conflict (against nations or humankind) provide the primary plot or background for the action of the film. Typical elements in the action-oriented war plots include POW camp experiences and escapes, submarine warfare, espionage, personal heroism, "war is hell" brutalities, air dogfights, tough trench/infantry experiences, or male-bonding buddy adventures during wartime. Themes explored in war films include combat, survivor and escape stories, tales of gallant sacrifice and struggle, studies of the futility and inhumanity of battle, the effects of war on society, and intelligent and profound explorations of the moral and human issues. Some war films do balance the soul-searching, tragic consequences and inner turmoil of combatants or characters with action-packed, dramatic spectacles, enthusiastically illustrating the excitement and turmoil of warfare. And some 'war' films concentrate on the homefront rather than on the conflict at the military war-front. But many of them provide decisive criticism of senseless warfare. War films have often been used as 'flag-waving' propaganda to inspire national pride and morale, and to display the nobility of one's own forces while harshly displaying and criticizing the villainy of the enemy, especially during war or in post-war periods. Jingoistic-type war films usually do not represent war realistically in their support of nationalistic interests, while avoiding the reality of the horrors of war. The good guys are portrayed as clashing against the bad guys (often with stereotyped labels such as 'krauts,' 'commies,' 'Huns,' or 'nips'). These revisionistic, politically-correct and historically inaccurate films, in such diverse examples as

Going to movies is as close to world travel as I get so I call my annual escape "Around the World in 80 Films". When I first got a home computer and internet access in the summer of 1999, it was an obvious first project for me to create a website about attending the Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF). My first effort was a freebie site at Geocities, but since then I've gotten my own spot here in cyberspace so I've revamped and transferred info from previous years to come up with this "new and improved" version of '80 Films'. The original plan was to maintain an annual report of all my filmfesting (eg. Seattle, Victoria, CineMuerte) but so far this is all there is. It's just a personal site, but hey, it's fun for me!
