Film-making students nominated for Royal Television Society Award
Three media studies students from the University of Sussex have had their film nominated for Best Factual Programme in the Royal Television Society Southern Region Awards. Sian Jones, Catherine Walsh and Marie Shaw all graduated this summer with degrees in media studies. Their 15-minute film, entitled 'Craith Y Cwm', is about the village of Capel Celyn in North Wales that was cleared of its inhabitants and then flooded in the 1960s in order to supply water to Liverpool. "My teacher at school actually went to prison for trying to blow up the dam," says Sian, who did the interviews for the film in her native language of Welsh. "It's still a very emotional issue - one man we interviewed broke down in tears talking about it." The students made their film as part of the 'Documentary: Theory and Practice' module of their degree, undertaking all the interviewing, directing and digital editing themselves. "We're just proud that the film has got this far and that people are watching it," says Catherine. Two other films have been nominated in the same category, and the winning film will then go on to the national competition. "Obviously we'd like to win," says Marie, who made several short films with Catherine in their first year of study. "We haven't seen the other films though, and now we can just see all the flaws in our own!"

The Making of "VAMPIRE": a film for BBC's Wildlife On One by Adrian Warren..page 1 of 6 Main Article Page [page 1] page 2 page 3 ... next page The Making of "VAMPIRE": a film for BBC's Wildlife On One, 1979 by Adrian Warren Desmodus feeding on a donkey It is curious that the vampire myth, even today, continues to hold public imagination. Count Dracula has appeared in over two hundred films from at least ten countries, as well as in plays, books, comics and on television. Bram Stoker's novel "Dracula" has never been out of print, and commercial merchandising includes package holidays to Dracula's castle in Rumania led by an "occult"guide. The story source for Stoker's novel was said to be Vlad Dracul, a 15th century ruler of the Transylvanian province of Wallachia. He apparently had over 23,000 people impaled on wooden stakes, and used to eat his meals while watching their agony. He was a sadist, and a mass murderer, yes, but no vampire. There was a vampire woman, however: an Austrian Countess - Elizabeth Bathony, a society beauty of the Imperial Court. As her looks faded with age, she imagined that the blood of young girls might keep her youthful and, over a period of 15 years, murdered some 600 of them in torture chambers of remote Carpathian castles, draining them of their blood for the sake of her vanity. Her accomplices were sent to the stake in 1611 but because of her high birth she was walled up in her chambers with a hole for air and food. She died three years later.

It was a cold night in Sydney. We had left the Japanese restaurant early to catch Sgt Kabukiman NYPD at the Valhalla Cinema. We met Lloyd Kaufman and said 'Do you ever get up on a bad morning and want to make another Apocalypse Now ?' He said 'No, I just want to keep exploding heads'. We never saw him again. But we did catch up with him over the phone a week or two later, at his New York home. He said he was distracted after a day's shooting, but proved an enthusiastic and obliging subject for interview. One gets the feeling he really takes Public Relations very seriously. And now, Mr Kaufman talks about life, movies and philosophy. Troma style.

THE COEN BROTHERS LADYKILLER HANKS The Coen Brothers have started filming their remake of the 1955 Ealing comedy classic The Ladykillers. The movie is an update of the classic 1955 Ealing comedy that starred Sir Alec Guinness and Peter Sellers. Before you start shouting "Sacrilege", it is Joel and Ethan Coen who are behind the project. The makers of O Brother, where art thou?, The Big Lebowski, The Man who wasn't there and Fargo will have the utmost respect for the material and you can expect another character driven comic classic.Starring Tom Hanks as Professor Goldthwait Higginson Dorr, the mastermind behind the crime, he is joined by J.K. Simmons (Spider-Man), George Wallace (Mr Deeds) and Marlon Wayans (Scary Movie) Here is the full synopsis Academy Award®-winner Tom Hanks teams up for the first time with Academy Award®-winning filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen (“O Brother, Where Art Thou?”) for this retelling of the critically acclaimed 1955 comedy, “The Ladykillers.”  Hanks stars as Goldthwait Higginson Dorr III, Ph.D., a charlatan professor who’s assembled a gang of “experts” for the heist of the century.  The thieves: experts in explosions, tunneling, and muscle, and the critical “inside man.”  The base of operations: the root cellar of an unsuspecting, church-going little old lady named Mrs. Munson (IRMA P. HALL).  The ruse: the five need a place to practicetheir church music. The problem:  it quickly becomes evident that Dorr’s thieves lack the mental capacity to do the job.  The bigger problem:  they have all seriously underestimated their upstairs host.

Robert Wise
A Journal of the Making of A Storm in Summer
By Mike Thomas After a 66-year career in the film industry, one might be excused for thinking that Robert Wise had pretty much met his career goals. His achievements include editing Citizen Kane , directing films in almost every conceivable genre including such classics as The Set-Up, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Executive Suite, I Want to Live, West Side Story, The Haunting (1963), The Sound of Music, The Sand Pebbles, The Andromeda Strain and Star Trek: The Motion Picture . He's won four Academy Awards; two as director and two for best picture for West Side Story and The Sound of Music He's been honored with the Irving Thalberg Award for excellence in production, served two terms as president of the Directors Guild, was honored with the DGA's prestigious D.W. Griffith Award (recently renamed the DGA Lifetime Achievement Award) and the Robert Aldrich Award and has chaired the Guild's Special Projects Committee since its inception. He served as president of the Motion Picture Academy and had been recently given the American Film Institute's Lifetime Achievement Award. Yet, for many years, one elusive goal has remained outside his grasp - directing his 40th film. I first met Bob Wise in 1981 when he visited San Diego for a lecture. I had just graduated from the UCSD film department and was in the early stages of creating the San Diego Film Society. I asked Bob for an interview and he invited me up to his office, then located at the Sunset Gower studios. We struck up a friendship that has remained strong throughout the intervening decades.

Text: Even though The Mirror was expected to be screened this year and The Circle was to be premiered at the 18th Fajr International Film Festival, the latter film went through the third winter of its life without ever being screened. The Circle's draft took shape in the winter of 1997 in a film production company in north or Tehran. Those days marked the period of excitement after the presidential elections earlier in the year, and filmmakers were hopeful that with the new deputy minister of culture in film affairs in power, they could reap utmost benefit of political freedom and direct films they had long yearned to make. Youthful rebellion and rights of women were two subjects of interest to this new era's filmmakers who cherished social and political inclinations.
The Circle is a realistic, bold, an cinematic picture of modern- day Iranian community, a picture that many do not like to see. The Circle's script was finally completed in the winter of 1998. But the Ministry of Culture's Supervision and Evaluation Department rated the script C and did not offer a transparent and clear answer to questions related to the film's production permit. These served as the first barriers blocking The Circle. Then strange proposals were made to Panahi to the effect that he make a film similar to The White Balloon. When they saw how adamant and unbending Panahi was, they implicitly and mockingly advised him to make his film abroad.
