    Shooting the past
When the maverick entrepreneur Tony Wilson breathed life into the Manchester music scene in the late 1970s, Paul Morley was the journalist who chronicled his - and its - rise. Now the story of Wilson, Joy Division, the Hacienda and Factory Records is being shot as a feature film starring Steve Coogan. Can they possibly get it right? Paul Morley - The Guardian Friday February 23, 2001 As I sit in a Manchester hotel bar a young man walks slowly across the room. He's quite tall and very slim, stooped inside slightly ill-fitting dark clothes that might have been bought at Oxfam, and he wears an expression of distractedsadness. For a stunning moment, I swear that it is Ian Curtis, the Joy Division singer who killed himself 20 years ago. He disappears through a door, vanishes like a ghost. I'm in Manchester to watch the filming of 24 Hour Party People, a story about the Manchester music scene from the punk of 1976 to the post-acid of 1992, a story about the suicide of Ian Curtis, a story about the artful dodging of Shaun Ryder, a story about a city that changed its face inside a decade, a story about the Hacienda nightclub, and most of all, a story about Tony Wilson, hero, villain, intellectual, slimeball, charlatan, loser, eccentric, drama queen, ultimate northern romantic. The film features Human Traffic's John Simm, The Royle Family's Ralf Little, Human Remains's Rob Brydon, Snatch's Lenny James, A Room for Romeo Brass's Paddy Considine, and comedians Peter Kay, Keith Allen, John Thompson, and Dave Gorman.

[ Home ] weblog Reference Shooting Processing ... Films This web is an attempt to document the use of 2 old 16mm movie cameras in the UK and a Weston Light Meter, Model 715 or 735. A short version of this web is on line; a fully documented version will be available on CD. Supplemental CD disks with more movies and information will also become available. Manuals for the 16mm cameras and light meters, and some reference material are contained only in the full version on CD. Manual files are set up as individual webs and are not turned on on-line.
    Weblog: March 18. 2004
A Firewire card will be delivered today. Thus begins my foray into digital land and higher resolutions. The next purchase will be a DVD burner and possible an external Hard drive swappable bay. Much research has been done on 3ccd mini DV Pal and NTSC cameras. I'll try a brain dump in the article section here. For more entries like this see: weblog Each time I add a new entry here the older one gets moved there. Not all documentation will fit up onto an affordable web. Not all video clips I have made will fit either. All of them are active and present on my at home PC version of this web. The web that results will contain everything, but not the on line version. The complete web will fit onto one CD, possible more. This on line web will tell of what is on my home PC / CD web; the home web will be a greatly expanded version of the publicly viewable one. They will be for sale as a resource - me as teacher again. Some video files will be kept on line and only made available as interested parties contact me. Sorry, it is getting too expensive to just dump everything up onto the web. One new video may be presented from time to time for all to see; that may work out; then It'll be changed. The home PC/CD will have a larger version of the on line version and at a higher quality.

Mani Ratnam: On his film-making style
    ABHA SRIVASTAVA
Besides his legendary reticence, what is also known is that he has inspired a legion of Mumbai’s bratpackers. His shot-takings, sense of drama and visual splendour is the stuff commercial movies are made of. Mani Ratnam, auteur director in a freewheeling confab with Abha Srivastava Money talks. But Mani Ratnam doesn’t. He just listens, absorbs what you are saying, mulls over it… and then offers you a one-liner. Just when you are about to go into a self-congratulatory mode, celebrating a response, you realise that he has essentially just reworded your question, and offered it right back to you disguised as a, well, bon mot Mani Ratnam truly is a man of few words. The 1956, Chennai-born MBA from Mumbai’s Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Business Management has a very clear agenda, which cannot be overshadowed by mundane matters like pandering to the lowest common denominator – to see and make “honest” films. Like he puts it succinctly, “The genre doesn’t matter. The sincerity does.”
