DOCUMENTARY MAFIA STYLE: NICHOLAS HANSEN by Brooke Edwards Filmsoc were invited to the MAFIA 2004 Documentary Awards earlier this year, at the Valhalla Cinema in Glebe. Screenings were also held simultaneously in Melbourne and Brisbane. The night showcased 8 innovative short documentaries in a variety of styles from animation to narrative word, to straight up informative, documentary style. Each film was of such high standard and provided insights into topics such as cloning, graffiti, war and the current plight of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Canberra to name just a few. Congratulations to Nicholas Hansen and Mick Elliot who were the award winners of the night!! Filmsoc got the chance to ask Nicholas Hansen a few questions about his documentary: URBAN EXPRESS... Urban Express is based around the idea of graffiti and people's perception of it. I was just curious as to how you became interested in this topic for your documentary. Have you been involved in graffiti yourself, or is it something that you admire? I have a fine arts degree in painting and am attracted to historical forms of propaganda art that in their way appeared in the streets engineered as striking imagery to alter peoples’ perceptions. IMAX® Film Making
T he IMAX® image... is the largest in motion picture history. The facts are simple: To create a high quality image, the bigger the screen size, the larger the film frame needs to be. Film frames are measured by perforations and millimeters. A smaller screen "only" four stories high can project a high quality image with film that has eight perforations and is 70 millimeters wide. For a eight-story screen, 1570 film is required. 1570 filmthe standard IMAX formatis ten times the size of a conventional 35mm frame and three times larger than a normal 70mm movie frame. The sheer size of IMAX-format frames, combined with the unique projection technology, is the key to the extraordinary sharpness and clarity of IMAX films. The IMAX® camera...versatile and dependable, and an integral part of the system. They've endured everything from the heat and thrust of a space shuttle launch to use under water and constant engineering adaptations are required to take the cameras on the demanding adventures displayed in large-format films. The IMAX® projector...the most advanced, most precise, most powerful projector ever built. IMAX projectors rely on unique movements such as the "Rolling Loop" to provide superior performance and reliability. The Rolling Loop advances the film horizontally through the projector in a smooth, wave-like motion; during projection, each frame is positioned on fixed registration pins, and the film is help firmly against the rear element of the lens by a vacuum.

A 35-strong group of third year media students from Coventry are off to Prague in February to make a short film which they intend to show at festivals around the country. The group will be in the Czech capital for a week of intensive filming, which will see a production penned, casted and directed by themselves brought to life in broadcast quality. Although when they started they had little working knowledge of their roles, they are now confident they can complete the ambitious project and boost their future careers in the process. Not only have the students had to learn about various aspects of filmmaking, they also had to raise the cash to pay for the production.

Rebuild Film Making in Pittsburgh the First Movie Theaters in the Country, the Original Film Capitol Posted by D J Sekelik on 3/9/2004, 7:49 pm How do you find a decent Female Film Director, and I'm trying to negotiate finance.I've tried agents they want money promise. I want to give a Female with talent a good project to work but I'm stuck I have deadlines etc. I may be new at film production, but I find this ridiculous. My Dream...
God willing...We are Going to put Pittsburgh back in the Film Spotlight like it was with the Warner Brothers and D, O'Selznick the first theaters in the country then they started Hollywood. I have been in the entertainment field 27 years I worked with both men and women. I have better luck with the women because they want to listen, create, are not ego maniacs and feel and create more depth, plus the percentage of women Directors in film today is about 6% of the total. This will be a historic project for everyone involved, in resurrecting Pittsburgh's Film Status also, a woman Director on a action drama award wining feature. The investors if all goes well, also want to be on board for other features, also building sounds stage studios in Pittsburgh helping the economy of a faded Smokey steel capital, to a clear lense of art. If you can help I would be grateful.

The Snuff Film
The Making of an Urban Legend
One of the most enduring, and little-recognized, urban legends about cinema is the "snuff film," in which actresses are supposedly actually killed onscreen. Over the course of nearly a quarter century, the snuff film has transformed from grade-Z slasher film to hoax to anti-pornographers' straw man to urban legend, and shows no sign of slowing down. Scott Aaron Stine Urban legends are everywhere. For many of us, our lives are made more interesting by the mere presence of such guilty pleasures. For others, the legends are very real, and hold as much-if not more-power than fears that can be justified. They are a means for us to indulge even our most morbid inclinations by the simple act of relaying well-worn accounts that fall somewhere between gossip and campfire tales. It can be rightfully said that they are the folklore of the industrial generation.
