McKissack Jr. Hollywood is all set to revisit a genre that supposedly died two decades ago the blaxploitation film. It shouldn't. Producers Doug McHenry and George Jackson plan on remaking "The Mack," a classic of the genre. The two told the Los Angeles Times that the conditions that created the main character, Goldie, exist today. "We're going after a bigger, more epic film not a remake," McHenry said. "We see it as a 'Pulp Fiction' and 'Scarface.' " "The Mack" was a 1973 film starring Max Julien as Goldie, a recently released convict who enters the highly lucrative pimping business on the mean streets of Oakland, Calif., as a way to survive. The movie tried to be a morality play involving two brothers one a pimp, the other a black nationalist. The two are at constant odds, until white policemen, upset that Goldie won't pay them protection money, kill their mother. This act bring the brothers together in an attempt to clean up the streets. Technically, the movie was a disaster, with a script so thin that it was barely visible. And it had the look of a not-so-well-made student project, not surprising since it was shot in five weeks.

184. The Horse: City Of God
Review making comparisons with other South Americian films and looking at the director's inventiveness.
http://www.the-horse.net/cityofgod.htm
MM_preloadImages('returng.gif'); c i t y o f g o d PAOLO LINS' NOVEL Cidade de Deus, a 600-page sprawler about a Rio favela where law has no meaning and drug gangs are run by children who are lucky to survive their teens, was a sensation in Brazil - Fernando Meirelles rises heroically to the challenge of filming its countless fascinating true stories, emerging with a masterful, breathless epic. It may be lazy to reach for comparisons with Central and South America's recent hits, but Meirelles' film does combine the non-stop big-city heartbeat of Amores Perros with the youthful warmth and inclusive narration of Y Tu Mama Tambien. If you insist, then on the strength of this Brazil is indeed the new Mexico.
Shot in real Rio housing projects with a huge cast of rookie actors, City Of God charts the rise over ten years or so of two kids: one becomes the ghetto's most ruthless dealer; the other, our sage narrator, escapes via a career in photography. As their lives keep intertwining, hundreds of supporting characters come and go in minutes, devoured by the City's fatal merry-go-round, their stories ending in a short blast of gunfire. Any one of them could support a whole movie on their own - at over two hours the film's objectively far too long, but you couldn't cut it anywhere without losing a revelation. That Meirelles even attempted such a massive piece of work is impressive enough: that's it's as fluid, consistent and entertaining as it is, is miraculous.

Quake done Quick films
Editorial
This is your normal kind of semi-regularly updated rolling news page, but much of the content concerns whatever machinima-related stuff currently piques our interest. 2nd July 2001 I was worried that I hadn't updated for a while, but it hasn't even been a whole year yet... so that's alright then... After a long interregnum work on the Rabbit Run is suddenly in progress again. When it's done, etc. One of our best ever pieces of work as QdQ has been, I think, our Scourge done Slick speed-run movie. In the unlikely event that you have Quake1 installed and own Ritual Entertainment (nee Hipnotic)'s Mission Pack #1, Scourge Of Armagon , then hie thee to the main QdQ site and download it in its full unlimited resolution glory, with the whole nest of Easter eggs, and so on. But of course, you haven't got that stuff installed, have you? So even most machinima people have never seen it. Enter conversion to conventional formats. Now, Machinima.com made a RealMovie version of our earlier Quake done Quicker a while back, but it looked a bit dark and quiet to me, and apart from that machinima's historical significance, it is nowhere near as fun as the much lesser known
