A NIMATED F ILMS A nimated F ilms are ones in which individual drawings, paintings, or illustrations are photographed frame by frame (stop-frame cinematography). Usually, each frame differs slightly from the one preceding it, giving the illusion of movement when frames are projected in rapid succession at 24 frames per second. The earliest cinema animation was composed of frame-by-frame, hand-drawn images. When combined with movement, the illustrator's two-dimensional static art came alive and created pure and imaginative cinematic images - animals and other inanimate objects could become evil villains or heroes. Animations are not a strictly-defined genre category, but rather a film technique, although they often contain genre-like elements. Animation, fairy tales, and stop-motion films often appeal to children, but it would marginalize animations to view them only as "children's entertainment." Animated films are often directed to, or appeal most to children , but easily can be enjoyed by all. See section on

Film
Computer animation has become regular and popular in special effects. Movies such as "Jurassic Park" "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" , and "The Abyss" have brought computer animation to a new level in their films. Scale models are a fast and cost effective method of creating large alien scenes. But animation has done just as well in animating fire, smoke, humans, explosions, and heads made out of water.
A major part in integrating live film and the computer animation, is to make absolutely sure that the scale and perspective of the animations are right. The scale is important to making the animation beliveable. The animators go through a great deal of work to make sure this is right.
Usually computer animation is only used when the scene needed would be impossible or very difficult to create without it. Computer animation takes a long time to render. Let's assume that you have five minutes of computer animation at a rate of 25 frames per second. This requires about 7500 pictures, and if these pictures are of high quality, then each fram could take fifteen minutes to render. With all these variables, the entire animation could take 1875 hours to render! That's over

Animation did not just happen instantly. Many people contributed to make animation what it is today, and to make computer animation at all possible. Many steps had to take place, first to make movingimages possible, and then developing techniques for creating animations. Here are some of the major milestones which made animation what it is today. Peter Roget presented his paper 'The persistance of vision with regard to moving objects' to the British Royal Society. Dr. Joseph Antoine Plateau and Dr. Simon Rittrer constructed a machine called a phenakitstoscope which produced an illusion of movement by allowing a viewer to gaze at a rotating disk containing small windows, behind which was another disk containing a sequence of images. When the disks were rotated at the correct speed, the synchronization of the windows with the images created an animated effect. Horner developed the zoetrope from Plateau's phenakistoscope. Eadweard Muybridge started his photographic compilation of animals in motion. Thomas Edison started research work into motion pictures.

A Trick of the Eye
An introduction to the art of animation by Brian Sibley There's no getting away from it, we love animation. Whether it's Wallace and Gromit riding a toy-train in pursuit of that villainous penguin, Feathers McGraw, or the endless, crazy attempts of Wile E. Coyote to catch the elusive Roadrunner, we remain fascinated by the art of animation. Many of the greatest 'toon' stars - from Betty Boop and Bugs Bunny to Buzz Lightyear and Bart Simpson - have become household names with as many fans as flesh-and-blood stars of film and television. Some, like Mickey Mouse, are known in just about every corner of the world. According to the Mouse's creator, Walt Disney, who did more than anyone in the 20th century to influence the development of the medium, 'Animation can depict anything the mind of man can conceive'. And that has certainly proved to be true. For over a hundred years now, animation has amused and entertained us by making jokes and telling stories. But it has done many other things as well: educational films have used animation to promote healthy teeth and teach road-safety; advertising commercials have used it to sell us everything from breakfast cereals to soap-powders; while, on various occasions (often in times of war), propaganda films have turned to animation to help promote political ideas and keep up morale.

The extraordinary Brothers Quay are two of the world's most original filmmakers. Identical twins who were born in Pennsylvania in 1947, Stephen and Timothy Quay studied illustration in Philadelphia before going on to the Royal College of Art in London, where they started to make animated shorts in the 1970s. They have lived in London ever since, making their unique and innovative films under the aegis of Koninck Studios. Devotees of the Czech animation maestro Jan Svankmajer , the Quays display a passion for detail, a breathtaking command of color and texture, and an uncanny use of focus and camera movement that make their films unique and instantly recognizable. Best known for their classic 1986 film Street of Crocodiles , which filmmaker Terry Gilliam recently selected as one of the ten best animated films of all time , they are masters of miniaturization and on their tiny sets have created an unforgettable world, suggestive of a landscape of long-repressed childhood dreams. From Microfinance to 3-D Animation: Making of the India Video Series
Ludi Joseph
IFC Corporate Relations

I recently spent three weeks in India with a film production team to "shoot" a video series based on selected IFC projects in Chennai, Hyderabad, and Delhi.
Delhi: The Hole in the Wall Project
Our first stop was the National Institute of Information Technology's "Hole in the Wall" experimental project in Delhi where IFC's loan is providing education to underprivileged children by promoting computer literacy. The project involves installing touch-screen computers in kiosks (or "holes") in walls to see how poor children adapt to IT. More than 100 kiosks are being set up in urban slums as well as in rural areas. The project was conceived by Dr. Sugata Mitra, Senior Vice President at NIIT, who would like to see "hole in the wall" replicated all over India. On the day we visited the Kalkaji computer, the 120-degree heat caused a meltdown "in the motherboard"; the children crowded around us, clamoring for it to be fixed so they could go back to surfing the Net and playing computer games.

From one change to another change, but still it's going on. It's a dream , it's my candy, it's my goal and it might be my last 30 min+ long movie.
Since 1997 i've the idea to make an alternative movie to the original BR movie. The Westwood game is my basis for, it inspired me and i found the this would be a great ground base for the movie i want to create.
The first concept was to make it by using lego figures and animate them by using conventional stop-motion technique.
But that would take 10 years to complete a two hours long movie.
so then i decided to cut it to 30 minutes. Then i lost my interest to stop-motion and thought what would be the technique i want to continue with.

Young Japanese Talents
All the 12 young directors presented in this programme started their careers by participating in the competition programme of Hiroshima International Animation Festival Most of them are now making animation for children's TV programmes, commercials, original video films and games, and/or teaching at universities and high schools. At the same time they try to create their own independent films with originality and individuality.
The professional contacts they made through the Hiroshima International Animation Festival have brought them to the forefront of Japanese animation, which is often assosiated with TV series and feature films for cinema.
However, young animators are increasingly interested in making original, artistic films. This programme will introduce some inspiring young Japanese film makers.
With sincerely thanks to Sayoko Kinoshita.
