We would very much appreciate the views of yourselves and your colleagues on the project: what kind of film do you think we should make?
what would you like to see in such a film?
what do you see as the most important issues around men and equal opportunities?
how is the new equal opportunities culture affecting men and boys?
what would be helpful for them?
what does the term "New Man" mean to you? MEN AND EQUALITY: PROJECT PROPOSAL The proposal is to produce a short animated film on men and equal gender opportunities. The film will raise awareness around the effects and implications for men and boys of the changes in society resulting from the new opportunities which have begun to open up for women and girls. What related problems have arisen, and how can they be overcome? What are the benefits, and how best to make use of them? The perspective will of course be a positive one: gender equality is necessary for, and of benefit to, men as well as women. Leeds Animation Workshop has been commissioned by the European Commission's Fourth Action Programme on Equal Opportunities Between Women and Men to carry out research on the impact of equal gender opportunities on the men and boys of Europe, and to produce a script and storyboard which will form the basis for a film on this subject, to be completed early in the year 2000.

http://www.fh-wuerzburg.de/petzke/zagreb.html
Ingo Petzke:
40 years of Animation made by Zagreb Film "Animation is... Animation is protesting against rigid forms. Animation, which only conveys natural movements cannot be creative animation. Animation is a technical process the result of which has to be creative. Animation means breathing spirit and life into a drawing, not by simply copying reality but by giving it a design. Life is warmth. Warmth is movement. Movement is life. Animation can be lukewarm or boiling. Cold animation isn't animation; it is like a stillborn child. Making animated cartoons means rubbing tree-trunks against each other until there is a spark perhaps or just a little bit of smoke. Take a kilogram of ideas (if possible not too confused), fifty kilograms of talent,, and a few thousand drawings. Stir it well and then with a bit of luck you won't get the right answer to your question." (Borivoj Dovnikovic, Ante Zaninovic, Zlatko Grgic, Vladimir Jutrisa, Aleksandar Marks, Dusan Vukotic and Nedeljko Dragic) If the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen decides to honour Zagreb film for 40 years of outstanding and continuous creative work with a small retrospective, it does this not only because of the close historical relations between the Oberhausen festival and this exceptional studio, but also to recall a genre from the eastern part of Europe which is in danger of becoming extinct and for which Zagreb film stands as a kind of representative.

Research Centres play a central role in the co-ordination of research around areas of specialist academic focus. They support collaborative research by bringing researchers and academic staff together, often attracting funding from the research councils to undertake projects with industry, commerce and the professions. Success in these areas through the universities Research Assessment Exercise has secured additional funding for the Institute to enhance its research activities. The Institute has invested in the development of a Research Fund for staff to enhance their research profile, nationally and internationally, and last year 24 research projects were under-taken involving 27 staff across all three faculties. Now, he stands amazed at the response by the online comics community, some of whom are calling his work the greatest on-screen representation of Batman, ever. Read on, to discover why he made it, who influenced him, and what he hopes will come of his work. This review was conducted on Monday, July 21st, by Mark Allen Click on the images above to view closeups.
What motivated the making of this film? I mean, are you a long-time Batman fan?
Yeah, just a huge fan of all things The Dark Knight, and a comic book fan in general, of the entire genre. It was a breath of fresh air in between directing commercials, which usually are not as exciting, or as dark. So, I decided to have a little fun and make a little short film, and I was really happy with the way it turned out.
Are there any creators who's work on the characters (of Batman and the Joker) specifically inspired you?

216 pp. Japanese animation (otherwise known as anime ) has had a hard time gaining mainstream acceptance in the West; largely because the general public, when it thinks of anime at all, usually thinks of it as something puerile. But get anyone, young or old, in front of a Hayao Miyazaki movie, and you'll probably win them over. Miyazaki is, simply, the animator's animator, charming the people who watch, make, or in any way enjoy animated movies.
So what kind of movies does he make, to cause all of this fuss? Like Disney movies, the films he directs at Studio Ghibli are ostensibly aimed at children, yet for everyone to enjoy. But there are three key things that make his work worth noting. First, unlike Disney movies, which have pretty much defined the template of the modern animated film in North America, each film is different from the other in story structure, rhythm, and tone. Second, he doesn't equate entertainment with pure escapism; even his Laputa: Castle in the Sky (1986), conceived as a "boy's adventure film," contains a strong theme on the reckless pursuit of technology. As in his other films, he expected his audience to continue to think about the ideas he had presented, even after they'd left the cinema. Third, his movies appeal to all ages by never talking down to children while keeping the emotions real enough for adults to become honestly engaged while watching.

The "book" for this class will be a reader of papers. This year, a lot of those readings will come from a preprint version of an animation textbook written by Rick Parent. We will be "beta-testing" this book. Comments on how it will be distributed will come soon. I will ask everyone to read some of a film book for part of the class. I suggest that you purchase one, and asked to bookstore to get copies of some of my favorites. I recommend that you come to class first to hear about them. There are many books you might want to use for the class. I list some of them here. This list is by no means complete.

I recommend the Renderman Companion not because its the reference to Renderman (which you may or may not want to use in the course), but because its worth having as a good general graphics reference. In terms of a reference for how to write programs that talk to Renderman, I actually think you're better off using the RIB file format document, and other online documentation

North Korea has been winning the heart of animators across the world with its competitive quality and low production costs. The U.S. biweekly Forbes recently reported North Korean animation producer, SEK Studio, has been doing business with French and other European production companies for the last few years. It reported North Korean artists are educated at schools such as Kim Il Sung University and SEK is one of the largest animation studios in the world, quoting Dominique Boischot, president of Paris-based film production company Les Films de la Perrine. The French businessman says he likes to work with SEK because it can handle large volumes of coloring assignments efficiently without comprising quality.
According to the report, Boischot, who contracts with animators in Chile, China and South Korea, believed North Koreans have a competitive edge over other rivals. ``You have some very specialized studios in South Korea, but they don't have the capacity to produce like SEK does," he says. "In terms of the quality of work, it's one of the best in the world."
Boischot said North Koreans prefer to be paid in euros and to have money deposited through channels in Singapore and Austria.
