and drawing directly onto film but started creating `character` animation when I was about 12 years old. Animation, I soon realised was one form of film making that I could produce entirely on my own.
All of my first short films were created on punched A4 paper that I used to get from WH Smith. My Dad made me a small light box so that I could see through several sheets of paper at once in order to trace and alter the previous drawings. This is how all drawn animation is initially created. However, I couldn`t afford acetate cells so had to make do with either painting or using felt tip pens to colour the original artwork on paper. Subsequently, this also meant that any backgrounds had to be very basic line drawings and traced onto every sheet of paper! In 1986 I began creating animations for the BBC TV series `Hartbeat`. This was hosted by Tony Hart and featured several 30 second animations in each programme. I would receive a list of the themes for each programme and have to create a storyboard based on my idea. If the storyboard was accepted I would be commissioned to produce an animation.
In 1988 I teamed up with several friends to produce a pilot film for a proposed childrens animated cartoon series.

Some successes were made on ultra-low budgets, including British Film Institute-assisted Stella Does Tricks, Love is the Devil and Under the Skin. Today, the UK not only breeds talents such as Lynne Ramsey, Guy Ritchie, Jonathan Glazer, Chris Cunningham and Udayan Prasad but provides the industry worldwide with cinematographers, costume and production designers, stylists, technical specialists, as well as producers, accountants and legal experts. The new British Film Council has an annual budget of £55 million to invest in new writing, training and in promising new films. But the engine behind the industry is the private sector including producers such as FilmFour and Working Title. The 21st century British film industry continues strong with East is East, Billy Elliott, Bridget Jones's Diary, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and plenty in the pipeline. Cave paintings drawn on walls. Historians believe that these images were made to look like they were moving by the flickering shadows cast on them from the fires. In China, shadows of puppets are projected onto parchment paper. This is developed into an art form in eastern countries, particularly India. Greeks drew figures on vases in various stages of movement
AD 1660's Magic lanterns were introduced. 1830's The phenakistiscope (spinning wheel with slots in) and the Zoetrope were developed. Many variations on these and other optical toys developed in this period. 1860's Development of the flip book which led to a coin machine 'viewer' based on a series of photographs being flipped by turning a handle. 1880's Emile Raynaud developed the praxinoscope. This was a spinning drum, rather like a zoetrope, but one in which viewers saw moving images in a series of mirrors rather than through slots. William Harbutt invented plasticine. This is used for model animation - now made famous by Wallace and Gromit and Chicken Run.

`Foster animation film talent' Our Bureau Kolkata , Feb. 8 INDIA ran the risk of stagnating as a mere outsourcing hub for animation films, if efforts were not made to encourage the creation and production of such films here. Stating this, Ms Anita Agnihotri, Director and CEO of Roop Kala Kendro (an Indo-Italian Institute of Film and Social Communication), said that India was getting identified as a cheap source of making animation films since software talent necessary for these films was available at a cheap rate here. "However, we need to foster the talents in film-making itself - or else we will be a mere dumping ground for outsourcing jobs," she said. Echoing this sentiment, Prof Giannalberto Bendazzi, seen as one of the greatest scholars of animation films in the world, said that India might get colonised again and it was selling itself cheap, without trying to cultivate its own talent. "Hollywood film-makers are as careful about money as any other and they started outsourcing animation film-making to Australia, till it became very expensive. They have now reached India, after exhausting their options in countries such as Japan, Korea and the Philippines," he said.

As the shoot day grew closer, Rosa felt he needed more than a conventional "shot list" to keep the shoot day as tight as possible. "I started realizing that I needed a tight plan for actor placement, or shooting could get out of control. Since everyone was donating their time, I definitely wanted the shoot to be as smooth and fun as possible."

FILM AND VIDEO: Animation
Early life
I was born young. I learned to walk, played Batman in the playground, and started building Airfix kits. I watched Rhubarb and Custard , and The Amazing Adventures of Morph . Life was never the same again.
Animation awakenings
After I annoyed my parents by drawing flick pictures in the margins of Pride and Prejudice , they bought me a third-hand silent Super-8 cine camera, which came incomplete with no instructions. By trial, error, and stout British pluck, I made my first film, A Quiet day on the Game Reserve , which, as its title suggests, was about a giant half-robot gazelle that went around smashing up buildings and derailing trains. I mixed media without inhibition, in the way which amateurs are allowed to do. My thirteen-year-old self succeeded in doing things which I would not try now, because now I know how difficult they are.
The plot congeals
After my first film, I made my second, which had more explosions in it. I followed this with my third, which mixed live action with animation done with bits of card, and a state-of-the-art Commadore PET computer. I then saved up £7.50, and with this made

materials. In 1923, Walt and Roy Disney, Ub Iwerks and other animators formed a company which would dominate animation for many years. Not only did the studio's animators produce finely drawn films, but they emphasized unique, specific characters and movement that revealed the characters' personalities. The Disney studio produced Steamboat Willie (1928), the first cartoon to synchronize sound with movement, and the short three-color Technicolor film Flowers and Trees , which won the first Oscar for animation in 1932. In 1938, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs , the first American feature-length animated film, received a Special Academy Award for significant screen innovation. More than half-a-century later, the Walt Disney Company was still breaking new ground: 1991's Beauty and the Beast was nominated for Best Picture alongside four live-action films. In 1995, Disney released the Pixar Production

The Collector I have been interested in animated films for a long time. As a teenager I produced short animations on video and 16mm, which led to a Foundation course at Chelsea College of Art and Design specialising in sculpture and film. In 1997 I graduated from The Surrey Institute of Art and Design with a BA in Animation. There, I produced two short films, one of which was commissioned by the Royal Society of Arts as part of The Student Design Awards. After graduating I worked on various storyboards and scripts for personal projects and completed a short course at The London Animation School. At the NFTS I've become interested in making films that combine live action and animation. The School has proved a supportive environment to gain a grounding in live action direction and post-production techniques and offered great opportunities to collaborate with many other talented people. In the future I would like to work in commercial animation and film. I am also planning a number of shorts for which I am seeking funding.

In 1939 Scottish documentary film maker John Grierson founded the National Film Board Of Canada. Two years later he was joined by fellow Scotsman Norman McLaren the experienced young animator. Together they established the Board's reputation as an internationally recognised pioneering commissioner of animation and documentary film making. Based in a country with two distinct languages French and English the attraction of animation to the newly formed Film Board from a purely practical point of view was obvious. Dual soundtracks could easily be produced for each film with one visual text uniting different communities. Under John Grierson the National Film Board was to become the eyes of Canada and Canadian animation became a vital means of promoting the country's national identity both to the ethnically diverse and widely scattered Canadian population and across the border to their culturally dominant neighbour the United States of America.
