32. Drawn To Be Wild: Trail-blazers In The World Of Animation
Halas Batchelor are most famous for making the film Animal Farm in 1954. It was the first animated colour feature film made in Britain.
http://www.bfi.org.uk/features/wild/learn/animators/trailblazers.html
Trail-blazers in the world of animation
Animation is the technique which gives movement and life to static objects, such as drawings, models or puppets. Animators can achieve this effect by exposing one frame of film at a time and adjusting their objects or drawings slightly between exposures. When the finished film is played through a projector, the rapid succession of pictures on the screen gives the illusion of motion. Film-making technologies opened up endless horizons for animators, but music and sound effects are particularly vital to bring their work to life. Trailblazers in animation include:
Emile Cohl
Born in Paris, real name Emile Courtet, he drew strip cartoons. After the invention of the cinema, he went to work for the Gaumont film studio. Fantoche , simply drawn in white outlines within a black frame - the beginnings of 'stop-frame' animation in France.

Info The Animation program/track is located in the School of Film and Television. It represents a broad-band approach to animation education, within a liberal arts framework. There is course work in both "traditional" and "digital" animation, plus courses in experimental, and alternative forms of the medium. It is the most comprehensive undergraduate education in animation in the country. Our intention is to prepare student artists for the last job that they'll have in the industry. In four years at LMU, Animation majors move from a traditionally- based foundation in animation production techniques during the Freshman year to the theory and practice of digital film-making and computer animation during the Sophomore year. The third year is devoted to the study of multi-media and alternative forms of animation. During the senior year, students write, animate, and direct a thesis film/project and prepare a personal reel and portfolio pursuant to placement in the animation industry. We are expecting to enroll 15-25 students per year for a total of 60-80 students in the program. Admission is not automatic and must be considered competitive. Transfer students will face an additional challenge in that our program requires six major projects and a thesis film for graduation. Consequently, we have the students start their first semester with animation production classes. This means that transfer students will need to make that work up during their tenure here because all of the upper division classes have lower division pre-requisites. This normally requires more than two years of study at LMU.

About ten, fifteen years ago, when a movie contained computer animation, it would be on the headline of any film newspaper. People would be so exited about the fact that the effects on the screen weren't actually made by man but came directly from the bits and bytes of some digital brain machine, that they'd go to see the movie only for that reason. Nowadays, almost every Hollywood movie carries computer animation, because the technology has advanced to a point where it's often cheaper to use computer animation than to try and do the real thing. So you will find computer effects in a movie that aren't even visible anymore like a stuntman that's been replaced by a computer actor etc. The really stunning things that are being done with computer animation tend to go towards the grandiose the enormous, giant spaceships, giant reptiles, giant ships. But there's another aspect of what computer animation can do in the movies that is a step further towards a new way of movie making. As a film-maker I've always been fascinated by all the beautiful things we get to play around with in our trade. First of all, there's the talent of so many creative people that come together to create something as fragile as a movie, and then there's all the technical utensils that there to make your story better.
