A Free and Open Press: Evaluating the Media
Grade level: 10-12
Subjects: U.S. Government, Civics, Media Literacy
Introduction
Media literacy is the understanding of the structure and function of media messages and the organizations that create them. Broadly defined, media is a term for anything that communicates, such as books, magazines, computers, radio, film and television. Media literacy is the ability to interpret and create personal meaning from the hundreds, even thousands, of verbal and visual messages we are exposed to every day.
The goal of media literacy education is to enable the individual to select, to challenge and question, and to use media actively and consciously for one's own purposes. Young people are living in a media-rich environment where they receive most of their information and entertainment through the electronic media of television, radio, and the Internet, but also from newspapers, magazines, and film. Media literacy education helps students to critically evaluate the incredible variety of information to which they are exposed, to understand the power and influence of the media, and to become informed, discriminating and active media consumers.

Teaching is a calling. In fact, I believe it is the highest calling. I believe it is the job of teachers to call their students to personal — as well as academic — excellence. Students will never know how high their potential in life is unless we call them to it. Here are fourteen of my favorite practices for helping students achieve their character potential.

WebQuests and Lesson Plans Audio and video can be integrated into activities across the curriculum. Why reinvent the wheel? You can find lots of units, lessons, and webquests on the Internet to explore and adapt. WebQuests provide an authentic, technology-rich environment for problem solving, information processing, and collaboration. This inquiry-based approach to learning involves students in a wide range of activities that make good use of Internet-based resources. Bernie Dodge developed the WebQuest concept back in the mid 1990s. To learn more, check out Bernie Dodge's WebQuest site at San Diego State University . Resources and Activities for April 7th and 8th grade students will explore the use of clay in decorative and/or utilitarian ceramic art pieces. After an introduction including slides and previously created ceramic art, students will submit ideas to be discussed. Thought must be given as to size, creation of object, and final appearance of ceramic piece. Students will be able to spend one class period, if desired, just manipulating the wet clay, and becoming used to it. Resources and Activities for April 20 - April 27 7th and 8th grade students will be introduced to PopArt icon Andy Warhol . After viewing and discussing his works using books and the internet museums and websites, students will create art to be embossed on a styrofoam plate, emulating Warhol's artistic printmaking. Students will have a wide choice of papers on which to print, including classified newspaper ads, wallpaper, giftwrap, sandpaper, and fadeless paper. The use of color involving tints and shades is encouraged, instead of using printing ink "straight out of the tube". Finished student artwork will be displayed on this website, and in the 7th-8th grade hallway.
