Millard Fillmore, 1800-1874 The 13th president of the United States, Millard Fillmore rose from poverty and illiteracy to lead his nation. Assuming the presidency after the sudden death of Zachary Taylor, Fillmore oversaw the passage of the Compromise of 1850, which staved off secession for 10 years. Millard Fillmore died in Buffalo, New York on March 8th, 1874. Hailing from the Finger Lakes region of New York State, Millard Fillmore was born in his family's log cabin in Locke Township on January 7th, 1800. The Fillmore family was extremely poor, and Millard Fillmore labored as a child on the family farmstead until he was indentured to a wool carder at the age of 15. Fillmore was almost completely illiterate when he entered his indentured apprenticeship, never setting foot in a school until he was 18 years old. When a frontier, single room school house was established in the town of New Hope, Fillmore was allowed to attend and developed a deep love of learning. Fillmore fell in love with the school mistress, Miss. Abigail Powers, who was two years his senior. Miss. Powers encouraged Fillmore's dream of learning the law, and when he was released from his indenture helped Fillmore secure a clerk's position in a local law firm. In 1823 Millard Fillmore passed the bar and became formally engaged to Abigail Powers, though his financial difficulties delayed the marriage until 1826. While Fillmore worked on building his law practice, Abigail Fillmore returned to teaching and their dual income along with an increasing population who needed legal aid soon improved their fortunes. Fillmore took his first plunge into politics in 1828 by joining the Anti-Maso Party, a political faction representing the democratic Anti-Masonic movement. The Party was relatively short lived, and Fillmore soon joined the Whigs.

On 4 October 1851 the Utah territorial legislature passed a joint resolution creating Millard County from a portion of Iron County known as "Pahvant Valley"; they named its county seat Fillmore City. This resolution also relocated the territorial capital to the new community and appropriated $20,000 toward that effort. On 21 October two companies set out from Salt Lake City for the Pahvant Valley. Brigham Young headed a delegation of lawmakers making the site selection of the territorial capital. The other company, under the direction of Anson Call, was chosen to make a settlement. On 28 October territorial lawmakers selected a spot located on the hunting grounds of the Pahvant Indians, 150 miles south of Salt Lake City. A monumental statehouse was planned to be constructed to house the territorial government. Truman O. Angell, architect of the Salt Lake Temple, designed an elaborate structure of four wings in the form of a cross with a Moorish dome at the center. Local red sandstone and native timber were to be used in its construction. The first wing was completed for the fifth annual session of the Utah territorial legislature which convened in Fillmore on 10 December 1855. The sixth legislative session also met at Fillmore, but soon adjourned to reconvene in Salt Lake City. Because the development of southern Utah was slow and accommodations in Fillmore inadequate, the capital was moved to Salt Lake City. The statehouse was never completed, but the first wing remains Utah's oldest governmental building and now serves as a

Millard Fillmore's Bathtub In the New York Evening Mail of 28 December 1917 appeared an article by H.L. Mencken entitled `` A Neglected Anniversary .'' The article discussed the very first American bathtub, how the bathtub had faced substantial public, medical and legal opposition, and how one was eventually installed in the White House during the administration of President Millard Fillmore. Mencken made the whole thing up. ``This article,'' he wrote, ``was a tissue of somewhat heavy absurdities, all of them deliberate and most of them obvious.'' ``My motive,'' he explained later, ``was simply to have some harmless fun in war days. It never occurred to me that it would be taken seriously.'' However: Soon I began to encounter my preposterous ``facts'' in the writings of other men.... The chiropractors and other such quacks collared them for use as evidence of the stupidity of medical men. They were cited by medical men as proof of the progress of public hygiene. They got into learned journals and the transactions of learned societies. They were alluded to on the floor of Congress. The editorial writers of the land, borrowing them in toto and without mentioning my begetting of them, began to labor them in their dull, indignant way. They crossed the dreadful wastes of the North Atlantic, and were discussed horribly by English uplifters and German professors. Home Tourism History and Culture Millard Fillmore (1850-1853) BACK HOME NEXT In his rise from a log cabin to wealth and the White House, Millard Fillmore demonstrated that through methodical industry and some competence an uninspiring man could make the American dream come true. Born in the Finger Lakes country of New York in 1800, Fillmore as a youth endured the privations of frontier life. He worked on his father's farm, and at 15 was apprenticed to a cloth dresser. He attended one-room schools, and fell in love with the redheaded teacher, Abigail Powers, who later became his wife. In 1823 he was admitted to the bar; seven years later he moved his law practice to Buffalo. As an associate of the Whig politician Thurlow Weed , Fillmore held state office and for eight years was a member of the House of Representatives. In 1848, while Comptroller of New York, he was elected Vice President. Fillmore presided over the Senate during the months of nerve-wracking debates over the Compromise of 1850. On November 10, 1846, Dr. George Parkman was escorting him on a tour of the Harvard School of Medicine when he collapsed and became unresponsive. He regained consciousness and made a near-total recovery. Adams' family doctor, John Bigelow, diagnosed a slight stroke. On February 21, 1848, he suffered his second and final stroke. Adams attempted to address the Congress on the Mexican War. After he arose, he fell into the arms of a colleague. His consciousness waxed and waned, and he died on February 23, 1848.
