Overview Pre-History Legends Etiquette ... Say it in Fijian
A ccording to Fijian legend, the great chief Lutunasobasoba led his people across the seas to the new land of Fiji . Most authorities agree that people came into the Pacific from Southeast Asia via Indonesia. Here the Melanesians and the Polynesians mixed to create a highly developed society long before the arrival of the Europeans. T he European discoveries of the Fiji group were accidental. The first of these discoveries was made in 1643 by the Dutch explorer, Abel Tasman and English navigators, including Captain James Cook who sailed through in 1774, and made further explorations in the 18th century. M ajor credit for the discovery and recording of the islands went to Captain William Bligh who sailed through Fiji after the mutiny on the Bounty in 1789. The first Europeans to land and live among the Fijians were shipwrecked sailors and runaway convicts from the Australian penal settlements. Sandalwood traders and missionaries came by the mid 19th century. C annibalism practised in Fiji at that time quickly disappeared as missionaries gained influence. When Ratu Seru Cakobau accepted Christianity in 1854, the rest of the country soon followed and tribal warfare came to an end.

Author : Jonathan A. Rodd TABLE OF CONTENTS SUMMARY HISTORY OF EXPLORATION GEOLOGY Regional Tectonic Setting ... Entire Document SUMMARY Fiji forms part of the South-West Pacific island arc system which marks the boundary between the Indo-Australia and Pacific plates. The territorial waters cover almost 1.3 million km² and contain two shallow-water Tertiary sedimentary basins. Bligh Water Basin, covering some 9500 km², has sediment thicknesses in excess of 5km and has excellent potential for hydrocarbons. Bau Waters Basin is also prospective, having a shallow-water area of about 1600km², with sediment thicknesses up to 4km. Fiji lies on the same regional play trend of Miocene reefs which produce oil in Irian Jaya, Indonesia and gas/condensate in offshore Papua New Guinea. Indeed Fiji's basins have many similarities with the oil and gas producing, arc-related basins of Southeast Asia. Source rocks of Oligocene, Miocene and Pliocene age are exposed onshore in Fiji and have been encountered by drilling in the offshore basins. An oil seep in Bligh Water Basin and oil and gas shows in wells provide evidence that hydrocarbons have been generated in the basins. Modelling studies indicate peak oil generation to be at about 2.6km below sea floor.

    History:
For the next 17 years after independence, the moderate conservative Alliance Party governed without interruption. Foreign policy was (and still is) broadly pro-Western and geared towards the development of regional alliances, such as the South Pacific Forum. As a member of the Forum, Fiji, along with its small neighbours, vigorously campaigned against French nuclear testing. It is also a member of the Commonwealth, from which it was temporarily suspended in 1987 and again in 2000. The 1987 suspension followed the general election that same year, which removed the Alliance Party from office. The poll brought to power a coalition between the main ethnic Indian party, the National Federation Party, led by Marendra Chaudhry (see below), and the newly-formed Labour Party, which drew support from the growing multiracial trade union movement. The new Government had a majority of Indian ministers, which proved too much for many nationalist native Fijians (referred to as Taukei Taukei rights.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The idea about the setting up of a Regional Youth Co-ordinating council for the Pacific Basin was initiated by the Fiji National Youth Council in 1975. The idea came into being after repeated resolutions by Pacific Island country representatives at various Pacific Island’s Youth Conferences before and during 1979. The follow-up of the 1979 resolution was not hurriedly pursued. The idea was then temporarily shelved, due to the fact that not many countries in the Pacific who have already established National Youth Councils were strongly pressing the issue. An elaborate campaign was done to assist smaller island countries on the setting up of their National Co-ordinating networks. The campaign was backed up by the satelite links called "Peacesat" based at the various centres within the region convening regular satelite meetings and regular exchange of resource materials on the existing National Youth Councils to assist the intending countries. This campaign was co-ordinated by the Youth and Adult Education Unit of the South Pacific Commission. It took six years to finally realise the success. In 1985 about ten National Youth Councils was recorded to have been formed in New Zealand , Australia, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Solomon Island, Niue, Cook Islands, Western Samoa, and Tokelau Island. Tonga had a youth workers association, Tuvalu was working towards the formation of the Tuvalu National Youth Council and Kiribati had made attempts towards a Kiribati National Youth Forum. With the above country-based councils; the time was deemed right to form a Pacific-based Regional Youth Co-ordinating body to foster closer collaboration for youth.

Democratic rule was interrupted by two military coups in 1987, caused by concern over a government perceived as dominated by the Indian community (descendants of contract laborers brought to the islands by the British in the 19th century). A 1990 constitution favored native Melanesian control of Fiji, but led to heavy Indian emigration; the population loss resulted in economic difficulties, but ensured that Melanesians became the majority. Amendments enacted in 1997 made the constitution more equitable. Free and peaceful elections in 1999 resulted in a government led by an Indo-Fijian. Fiji has been a major contributor to UN peacekeeping missions in various parts of the world.

Fiji and Hawai’i Compared Racial Supremacy By Law in Fiji Resembles What Hawaiian Sovereignty Activists Are Seeking (both Akaka bill and independence proposals)
    OVERVIEW OF THE MAIN POINTS
The history of Fiji has many similarities to the history of Hawai'i; and recent ethnic strife in Fiji raises important questions for Hawai'i's future.
The Akaka bill, and proposals for Hawaiian independence, threaten to take Hawai’i down a path leading to the kind of social and political system that has plagued Fiji for many years, devastating Fiji’s economy and resulting in the violent overthrow of the government on several occasions in the past 20 years. This essay examines the history of Fiji and its recent ethnic strife, paying special attention to similarities to Hawai’i regarding voting rights, property rights, and racial supremacy written into law.
Fiji and Hawai’i are both tropical island archipelagos in the Pacific, separated from their neighbors by long distances across the ocean. In both Fiji and Hawai'i, non-native immigrants and their descendants (some with 8 generations of residence) have come to feel entitled to equal rights with the natives. But in both Fiji and Hawai'i, racial equality has been called into doubt in recent years, as some of the citizens with native ancestry assert with increasing stridency that they have a right to racial supremacy in political power and control of the land.

Hello and welcome to the last edition of Trowels and Tapes for 2001! We have had a busy few months with a number of field projects and archaeological work. We currently have two volunteers from the Fiji Institute of Technology working with us for a few months for a few hours every week. As this is the final edition of Trowels and Tapes for the year, we would like to wish everyone happy holidays!
Since our last update we have worked on the following projects:
  • Trowels and Tapes. I attended two conferences in August. The first was the Pacific Islands Museums Association (PIMA) conference in Palau on the Interpretation of Cultural Heritage Sites; and the second the Annual Conference of the Oral History Association of Australia (OHAA) held in Canberra, Australia. I presented a country paper on Fiji for both conferences. Our first site for the historic site-recording project has been completed.

    POTS AND PREHISTORY
Viti (Fiji) was first settled more than 3500 years ago by voyages sailing from Melanesia. The geological origin of their artifacts shows that their scattered communities remained in touch and were interdependent. Their archeological hallmark the celebrated 'lapita' pottery was decorated with intricate geometric patterns impressed by finely saw-toothed blades which were pressed into the clay prior to firing. The archaeological record establishes that the Vitian people and culture varied widely with time, evolving through thousands of years of dynamic and confused blending of ancestral Polynesian, Melanesian and west Polynesian peoples. The main forms of vessels produced in recent centuries included a wide range of cooking pots, yaqona bowls and vessels.
    CANOES
The ancestral Polynesians were a seafaring people. The islanders would navigate from island to island with the use of swells, currents and stars to mention only a few of the vast number of indicators which skilled persons could use to steer from place to place.
    FISHING
Line fishing, especially trolling was never very popular in Viti. Fishing included heavy baited wooden hooks used for catching eels, to coir sinnet and hibiscus bast nets used for catching turtles. A wide range of hand nets were used by women for prawns, shellfish and small fry while spearing and shooting with multipronged arrow was a male prerogative.

History of the Native Land Trust Board Introduction Ratu Seru Cakobau The Native Land Trust Board derives its existence from the Native Land Trust Act of 1940. A brief history of the land in Fiji will assist us understand the reason behind its creation. At the time of Fiji was ceded to the British Crown in 1874, there were many foreign occupiers and claimants to areas of Fijian land. These had come about through dealings between chiefs and European beachcombers, Resident Governor Sir Arthur Gordon stopped all land sales immediately after Cession. In 1876, a commission under Victor Williamson was set up to investigate all claims to title to these land. Many claims were refused many more reduced. Even so, some 400 000 acres of Fijian land were registered in freehold title as Crown Grants. These freehold land represented a substantial proportion of the good agricultural land of Fiji. By 1880 it was realised that all land recognised to be owned by Fijians would have to be recorded and registered and also that there would have to bean authority to settle boundaries and ownership disputes. The Native Land Commission was established in 1880 to enquire and investigate claims to land by the indigenous landowner. At the same time a leasehold system was created where land could be used on a 21 year lease. Negotiations were carried out directly between the Fijian land owner and the prospective tenant. Apart from a brief period between 1905 and 1909 outright sales of native land have continued to be forbidden.
