New Zealand should foster new Fiji Government of National Unity
Keith Locke MP 1st March 2001 The Green Party has welcomed today's court decision upholding the 1997 Fiji constitution.
"New Zealand should push for a new broad-based Fiji government, based on this multi-racial constitution," said Green Party Foreign Affairs spokesperson Keith Locke.
"There is now a political window to begin the healing process in Fiji.
"A new constitutional government could include all political forces, with the aim of rebuilding the country and preparing the way for new elections," he said.
"We should tell the interim government and military leaders that if they abide by the court decision, and assist the return of constitutional rule, they will have the full support of New Zealand.
"But any obstruction of the will of the court will lead to continuing sanctions and the isolation of Fiji in the world community," said Mr Locke.

Alexander Downer Discusses Fiji Government Issues, Cambodian Release
A DOWNER :The Australian Government?s very concerned that the former Khmer Rouge Commander Chhouk Rin has been set free by a court in Phnom Penh. We need to look at the details of the judgement before we know what the technical legal issues really are although the suggestion at this stage seems to be that the judge has released Chhouk Rin on the basis of legislation which provided for amnesties for former members of the Khmer Rouge. But we still need to explore the detail including getting it translated into English before we can make any definitive, express any definitive view about that. I have instructed our embassy in Phnom Penh to make the strongest possible representations to the Cambodian Government to say that we are very concerned and very disappointed at what has happened. I have said both in Opposition and in Government that those who are responsible for the death of David Wilson and his two colleagues, one French and one British, should be brought to justice.

Journalism Programme SUVA: Civilian gunmen leader George Speight today defied mounting international condemnation of the kidnapping of Fiji's elected cabinet, claiming that his regime was now the legal government of the Pacific nation. His self-styled interim government named a list of "advisers" last night but at least three of them denied any involvement on national radio and condemned the attempted coup. Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry, the country's first Indo-Fijian prime minister whose Fiji Labour Party was swept to a landslide victory in last year's general election, his cabinet, and MPs have been detained under armed guard in Parliament since yesterday morning. While the police and military forces appeared loyal to constitutional authority, Speight, a shaved-head timber industry businessman and undischarged bankrupt, claimed that indigenous Fijians supported the illegal regime. He said that only the President, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, and negotiator Sitiveni Rabuka, who led the two 1987 military coups and was ousted as prime minister by the Chaudhry coalition government, were not in support.

Reporter: Lisa McGregor
COMPERE: The high profile human rights' lawyer, Geoffrey Robertson, has agreed to act in a court case seeking to declare the recent Fiji coup illegal and reinstate the ousted Labor Government.
The London-based QC will represent three members of the Chaudhry Government against a number of Fijian power brokers including the President, the Head of the Armed Forces, and the Chief Justice.
The case is being described as a crucial test of democracy and the independence of the judicial system in Fiji but, as Lisa McGregor reports, there are now splits within the deposed government's ranks.

FIJI GOVERNMENT CALLS ON JAPAN TO STOP PLUTONIUM SHIPMENTS; GREENPEACE APPLAUDS PROTEST, CALLS FOR STRONG NATIONAL AND REGIONAL ACTION
8 September 1999 Suva: Greenpeace Pacific welcomes today's statement by the Fiji Goverment in protest of the current plutonium fuel (MOX) shipment through the region. Greenpeace is urging the Government to go further, and demand that the Pacific Teal and Pacific Pintail not enter Fiji's Exclusive Economic Zone. "The New Zealand and South African governments asked for a similar undertaking and received assurances that the Pacific Pintail and Pacific Teal would not enter their EEZs. We believe Pacific Island Governments should do the same, and that Fiji should lead the way," said Samantha Magick. In today's statement, Fiji Foreign Affairs Minister, Doctor Tupeni Baba called on the authorities concerned to stop the shipments. "We hope the Fiji Government raises this issue at next month's South Pacific Forum leaders meeting," said Magick. "Unless there is a strong declaration against future shipments, we fear that the South Pacific will become the "route of least resistance" and a highway for plutonium and nuclear waste shipments." "In the face of strong statements from Latin American and Caribbean countries, we believe the South Pacific is currently viewed as the 'route of least resistance'. This has to change," Magick said.

Description and history of the flag
Chris wrote, "Fiji got kicked out of the Commonwealth as a result of the coup d'etat in (I think) 1987. Didn't change its flag, which is a defaced pale blue British ensign." Apparently (according to The Flag Bulletin Brendan Jones , 10 August 1995 Fiji still retains very close economic and political ties with the UK, which may possibly have influenced its decision to retain the old flag. Remember that the British Foreign Office does not recognize Fiji's withdrawal from the Commonwealth and therefore treats Fijian citizens as through they were still in the Commonwealth. The Fijian ambassador is still the High Commissioner, for example, and Fijian students can still apply for Commonwealth scholarships (I know this because I used to help administer one). I think the Foreign Office is basically turning a blind eye to the problem (something they are very good at!) in the hope that it will somehow disappear. Stuart Notholt , 23 August 1995 Fiji held a competition on independence to design a new flag. The fact that they ended up with one so similar to the colonial ensign suggests a certain lack of imagination either on the part of the competitors or the judges! Anyway, the only main differences made were that the white disk behind the coat of arms was removed and the colour changed to light blue. A dark blue version, which must look virtually the same as the old colonial flag was adopted for use as the state ensign.

Fiji government helping build animation studio Fiji's first animation studio will be in operation this summer as the result of a partnership between the country's government and Chris Walker's Modern Cartoons. The studio, which is yet to be named, hosts production in August on The Great North Pole Elf Strike , produced by Film Brokers International and Avoca Media, said Dan Bolea, CEO of the Fiji Audiovisual Commission. Included in the animation studio will be a school to teach animation skills to local students. Creating a local film industry is the long-term goal of the Fijian government, Bolea said. "Oh boy."
