BASIC INFO. GEOGRAPHY GOVERNMENT ... FIJI Fiji's system of parliamentary democracy, inherited when the country gained independence from Great Britain in 1970, was interrupted in 1987 with the installation of a military regime following two bloodless coups led by then-Lt. Col. Sitiveni Rabuka. Fiji returned to elected government in 1992. That government fell in November 1993 over failure to pass a budget for 1994. After a general election in February 1994, the government of Prime Minister Rabuka was returned to power.
In 1995 the Rabuka government initiated a constitutionally mandated review of the Fiji constitution, resulting in the signing into law of a new broadly accepted constitution which came into effect in July 1998. All major political parties participated in the review process and the new constitution is the result of consultation and consensus among the people of Fiji. The review process has helped restore confidence in the political and economic stability of the country.
Elections held under the new constitution in May 1999 resulted in a surprise Labor party victory, the installation of a "People's Coalition" led by an Indo-Fijian Prime Minister, Mahendra Chaudhry. The elections were conducted freely and fairly, and led to a peaceful transition of power.

Deposed PM to join Fiji government
Chaudhry has accepted a seat in Qarase's government SUVA, Fiji Fiji's deposed prime minister Mahendra Chaudhry has accepted an invitation from the country's new prime minister to join his government. "If you could be in government, what fool in politics would want to be in the opposition?" Chaudhry told reporters after accepting the invitation from Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase. "Its serious business running a strife-torn country like ours," said Chaudhry, an ethnic Indian who was thrown from office in a racially-inspired coup in May 2000. Qarase was sworn in as prime minister on Monday after his nationalist party won 31 seats in the 71-seat parliament in post-coup elections which ended last Friday. The new prime minister said earlier that a Qarase-Chaudhry government was not workable, to which Chaudhry responded, "the ball is now in his court." Asia-Pacific Network: 16 February 1999 MEDIA: FIJI GOVERNMENT TAKEOVER OF DAILY POST STIRS ALARM The Fiji Islands Government has bought a controlling interest in one of the country's two daily newspapers on the eve of a general election campaign, stirring protests over press freedom and privatisation policies.
  • See 1998 report "Pacific press freedom on the rocks" By DAVID ROBIE in Suva THE FIJI ISLANDS Government has bought a controlling interest in one of the country's two daily newspapers on the eve of a general election campaign, stirring protests over press freedom and privatisation policies. Opposition political parties and media groups have protested over the risk to press freedom after the Government's sudden move in mid-February to buy a major stake in the Daily Post, a newspaper with a sharply critical editorial line. National unions and other critics have also challenged the buy out on economic grounds, citing what they see as the hypocrisy of Government policies seeking privatisation of key sectors such as water, electricity, health and other state services while buying an ailing newspaper business. The timing of the takeover comes just three months before a general election - the first under a new multiracial 1997 Constitution which paved the way for the republic regaining a place in the Commonwealth and which guarantees a free press and freedom of expression.

  • David Robie's commentary SUVA, Fiji Islands (PMW): The Fiji Government has attacked "media hysteria" by the local and foreign-owned news media, accusing Rupert Murdoch's Fiji Times of "fanning the fires of sedition and racism". In an eight-page advertisement in the Fiji Sun of 30 October 1999, headlined "Government responds to media hysteria", the Government continued the latest tirade against news media sparked off by Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry at this week's launching of a new self-regulatory industry code of ethics. The Fiji Sun also published its own editorial overview and reaction on the issue of media credibility and the Fiji Times published Chaudhry's speech in full - the first newspaper to do so independently. The Government's advertisement also carried the speech text and documents purportedly showing how the Fiji Times "distorted and doctored" a report about alleged security threats to members of Parliament.
