Geography description: A country comprised of over 300 islands, Fiji is a tropical paradise of jarring contrasts. Remote villages nestled along white-sand beaches where native Fijians catch fish from the blue water; tense ethnic rivalries brought about by British colonialism and labor recruitment from India; high-hoped, high-cost, and sometimes highly-damaging development schemes designed to attract tourists—and commercefrom around the world: these are the realities. Fiji: A Geographical Expedition is not your typical study abroad session. Only 12 students will be selected for this rigorous program of field-study mixed with service-learning. While there will be some course readings and lectures, students will be expected to learn via the development of their own skills and resourcefulness. Detailed observations of landscapes and livelihoods, in-depth conversations with local peoples, and active participation in a service-learning project are the heart of this program. highlights: program cost in us$: Inquire for more info.

Democratic rule was interrupted by two military coups in 1987, caused by concern over a government perceived as dominated by the Indian community (descendants of contract laborers brought to the islands by the British in the 19th century). A 1990 constitution favored native Melanesian control of Fiji, but led to heavy Indian emigration; the population loss resulted in economic difficulties, but ensured that Melanesians became the majority. Amendments enacted in 1997 made the constitution more equitable. Free and peaceful elections in 1999 resulted in a government led by an Indo-Fijian, but a coup in May of 2000 ushered in a prolonged period of political turmoil. New elections are scheduled for August 2001.

    Geography of Fiji
More detail Fiji is a group of volcanic islands in the South Pacific lying about 4,450 km (2,775 mi.) southwest of Honolulu and 1,770 km (1,100 mi.) north of New Zealand . Its 322 islands range in size from the largeVitu Levu (where Suva and 70% of the population are located) and Vanua Levuto much smaller islands, of which just over 100 are inhabited. The larger islands contain mountains as high as 1,200 meters (4,000 ft.) rising abruptly from the shore. Heavy rains (up to 304 cm or 120 inches annually) fall on the windward (southeastern) side, covering these sections of the islands with dense tropical forest. Lowlands on the western portions of each of the main islands are sheltered by the mountains and have a well-marked dry season favorable to crops such as sugarcane More than half of Fiji's population lives on the island coasts, either in Suva or in smaller urban centers. The interior is sparsely populated due to its rough terrain. Location: Oceania, island group in the South Pacific Ocean, about two-thirds of the way from

FIJI: THE WARRIOR ARCHIPELAGO In War they are fearless and savage to the utmost degree, but in peace their disposition is mild and generous towards their friends, and the affection they bear towards their relatives is seldom found among Europeans. William Lockerby Marooned in Fiji in 1808 Fiji's Geography The 300-island archipelago of Fiji is at the bottom of the Melanesian chain of islands south from New Guinea. The archipelago is bound on the west by the Yasawas, the closest islands of the Fiji group to the Melanesian islands of Vanuatu. Melanesian influence is particularly marked among the Yasawa population, notably with regard to phisiogomy, language and socio-religious characteristics. At the easternmost edge of the archipelago lie the small and isolated islands of the Lau group. The proximity of the Laus to the islands of West Polynesia, particularly Tonga, has resulted in a considerable flow of culture and genes from Polynesia, with the result that Lau islanders both physically and culturally resemble their neighbors to the east. At the center of these two small island groups lie the four main islands of Fiji: Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni and Kandavu, which straddle the dividing line between two distinct peoples and their cultures. Fundamentally, Fijian society and culture are traditionally Melanesian, but modified by ideas and concepts introduced from Polynesia and integrated with Melanesian interests and practices.
