Before delving into the Fact Department, where we will examine a bit of Fiji geography, history, culture and other areas we should ask a very basic question why visit Fiji in the first place? I have one short answer. The people. Chances are you will not find warmer, more hospitable human beings on the planet. When you combine intelligent, engaging people with a pristine environment, fine cuisine, and reasonably priced lodging, can one ask for much more? Fiji: Introduction
Background: Fiji became independent in 1970, after nearly a century as a British colony. Democratic rule was interrupted by two military coups in 1987, caused by concern over a government perceived as dominated by the Indian community (descendants of contract laborers brought to the islands by the British in the 19th century). A 1990 constitution favored native Melanesian control of Fiji, but led to heavy Indian emigration; the population loss resulted in economic difficulties, but ensured that Melanesians became the majority. Amendments enacted in 1997 made the constitution more equitable. Free and peaceful elections in 1999 resulted in a government led by an Indo-Fijian. Fiji has been a major contributor to UN peacekeeping missions in various parts of the world.

Etiquette
Etiquette In A Fijian Village When visiting a village it is customary to present a gift of yaqona, which is also known as kava. The gift, called a sevusevu, is not expensive-half-a-kilo (which is appropriate) costs approximately $10. It is presented to the Turaga ni Koro, the executive head of the village. The presentation is usually in his house and will generally be attended by some of the older men who happen to be in the vicinity at the time and can quickly turn into a social occasion. Pounded into powder, the yaqona will be mixed with water and served. Be prepared to shake hands and to answer many personal questions such as where you are from, are you married, how many children do you have, how much money you earn etc. It is important to dress modestly when away from the immediate vicinity of your resort or hotel. Always carry a sulu (sarong, lavalava, pareu) to cover bathing togs or shorts and halter tops. Do not wear a hat in a village as it is considered an insult to a chief. Do not wear shoes into people's houses. It is considered an insult to touch someone's head.

Fiji - Geography
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Think about a box of crayons. Think about a big box of crayons. From one side of the box to the other are lots and lots of colors. Red, pink, blue, green, purple and orangeall can be found in a box of crayons. Do you have a favorite color? Maybe you have several favorite colors. Now imagineif you cana place in the world where you can find every color you can imagine. That place is a group of islands called Fiji.
Fiji is a group of more than 300 islands in the South Pacific Ocean. They were created by volcanoes a very long time ago. Fiji's weather is almost always comfortable. It is almost never too hot or too cold in Fiji. That's one of the reasons why people from all over the world love to take vacations there. Another reason is all the color in Fiji. But the color isn't very easy to find. In fact, you'd get very wet finding the prettiest colors in Fiji. That's because they are underwater!
Beautiful underwater plants called coral can be found all around Fiji. Coral are like underwater flowers. They can be found in almost any color you can imagine! And sometimes coral is colored like nothing you've seen before! In fact, a famous diver called Fiji's coral "a touch of heaven."
