Orchid Island Cultural Centre Book Air, Car or Hotel Orchid Island Cultural Centre Viti Levu Travel Tip Eileen Chambers, Fiji Visitors Bureau ... While other native peoples were stripped of their lands in the colonial era, Fijians were allowed by an unusually farsighted British governor to keep more than 80 percent of theirs in perpetuity. That distinction explains why Fiji's ancient culture lives today not in corny hotel 'folkloric' shows but in village reality. And that is the pleasant surprise of the Orchid Island Cultural Centre, just seven miles outside Suva, the capital. A human-scale, historical experience awaits visitors a showcase of flora, fauna, crafts, customs and ancient rituals kept alive through everyday use. Orchid Island, a natural formation in a river, has been cultivated into a realistic microcosm of Fiji. People live and work in the traditional village of thatched bures constructed around a 50-foot-high temple. Cannibalism, long connected with temple worships is the one custom no longer practiced or demonstrated for tourists. Breathe easy.

Travel Phonecard Fiji: Creatures, culture and creeps By Jane Dunn I lived in Australia for five months while studying abroad. The experience there was like no other. However, as many people know, the plan ride between Australia and the United States takes forever. On the way there, I was with a group of college students and we were able to turn the plane into a party taking full advantage of the free drinks at the bar. On the way home, I decided to break up the trip with a trip to Fiji. Fiji is not one island but 365 islands. One of the largest issues in going there was figuring out where to go. All large planes fly into Nadi (prounouced NAHNDEE). So, I decided that Nadi was to be my starting point. When talking to people on the plane ride over, I heard about how wonderful Fiji was and how beautiful it was. However, I was not given much of an impression by their opinions. It sounded as though they had only been staying at resorts where you are so secluded and pulled away from locals that you could be absolutely anywhere and it just happens to be Fiji's tropical islands instead of Hawaii's.

Discovering My Fiji Origins
by Monica C., Ivoryton, CT

Bula! That means "hello" in Fijian. For my whole life, I have heard nonstop about this island called Fiji. My parents - who met while my dad was there as a Peace Corps volunteer teaching at a school where my mother was studying - have taught me about its people, culture, foods and religious beliefs. I've also attended gatherings of Peace Corps volunteers who served with my father. Their slide shows are full of spectacular sunsets and coconut palm trees lining never-ending beaches, and even though I grew tired of them, they never failed to draw oohs and aahs from the audience.
At the age of two, I made my first of three 26-hour trips across Pacific Ocean to Fiji. Each trip has revealed more about the country and my mother. My mother and I made that trip unexpectedly because my nani, my grandmother, was ill and longed to see her American granddaughter. Although I have few memories of that first trip, I do remember Nani braiding my hair and putting make-up on me. The brush gliding through my hair and the powder puff hitting my cheeks are feelings I will treasure forever because she soon passed away. Although I was too young to understand what my mother's family meant to her, I later learned the invaluable traditions and customs her family passed down. Family members are treated with much respect, with everything revolving around the family's gathering. This important part of their culture shows through in my mom.

INTRODUCTION Fiji comprises 300 islands, scattered over 1.3 million square kilometers. There are two large islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, which comprise 87% of the total land area and hold 75% of the population. The archipelago has one of the best developed coral reef systems in the Pacific, where all major reef types are represented. Whilst Fiji?s vegetation and wildlife are small in numbers they are of great scientific and genetic interest because of the high proportion of endemic forms. Rainforest is the dominant terrestrial ecosystem, although today only 750,000ha remains of Fiji?s natural forest. Current archaeological research indicates that Fiji was inhabited over 3,590 years ago. Evidence suggests that these early inhabitants were coastal dwellers who depended largely on the resources of their coastal environment. They have been described as ?Lapita people? as a result of the distinctive dentate stamped pottery that they produced. This pottery has also been found from New Caledonia, through Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands to Fiji, telling a tale of exploration and discovery which is unique to mankind. Radio-carbon dating indicates that from Fiji, the Lapita people spread out to populate the area known today as Polynesia.

Pacific Island Books
Culture and Society Culture and Society Children of the Sun: Fiji Islands by Glen Craig. Recommended retail price $12.50.
This is a superb collection of wonderful photographs by long time Fiji resident/visitor Glen Craig. Glen (who for reasons known only to himself goes by the epithet Glenbo) has a quirky and vibrant photographic style and his photographic sense of humor shines through. The fly leaf to the book proclaims: “This book is a celebration of the peoples of the fiji islands whose wonderful spirit and spontaneity is evident in the many and varied images. May they and all visitors to these shores protect and nurture this spirit for all present and future Children of the Sun.”
The guff at the back makes much of the fact that only amateur cameras were used and that no scan or system editing was applied. This is really so much sophistry … when you are as good a photographer as Glen is, it really doesn’t matter what system you use. And anyway the distinction between amateur and professional cameras is thin these days.
If you had to buy only one book about Fiji this would be my recommendation … even above my own Fiji’s Natural Heritage (but of course you should buy both!) Soft cover, 136 pages (17 cm by 17cm).
