Fiji History
Fiji's first settlers were Melanesians, who arrived there some 3,500 years ago. When European explorers landed in the islands in the mid 1600s, they discovered that outsiders could expect a warm welcome - in a Fijian oven. The islanders' custom of eating intruders and other undesirables didn't cease until the late 19th century, when Fiji became a British colony.
As they did elsewhere in the region, the British imported laborers from India to work the sugar plantations. Today, Fiji's population is divided almost equally between ethnic Indians and Melanesians. Mixing between the two groups is minimal, and informal segregation runs deep at almost every level of society. Ethnic tensions flared shortly after the nation gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1970. Those tensions escalated in 1987 after elections seated a coalition government dominated by ethnic Indians. A coup led by Sitiveni Rabuka, a native Fijian military leader, overthrew the civilian government. A new constitution was written giving preferential treatment to ethnic Fijians. Pressure from the international community led to changes in the constitution in 1997, which eased tensions for a time.

ABOUT FIJI - CULTURE

In pre-missionary contact years, rituals, elaborate ceremonies, strict observance of customs were part of the Fijian way of life. These cultural traditions have eless survived to the present day, albeit in a more modified form.
Some of the more violent customs such as cannibalism were stopped after the missionaries arrived in Fiji. Human sacrifice was a part of the Fijian ritual in days gone by. For example, when the posts for a temple or chief's house were being set up, live men were put in the holes where the posts were to go - "to hold them up"
The Fiji society is a communal one - with values placed high on the family unit, the village and the vanua (land). People in villages and those in urban areas share the communal obligations and rewards of community life and are led by a hereditary chief.
Hierarchy
The Fijian chiefly system follows the Polynesian system where the position is hereditary.

FIJI: THE WARRIOR ARCHIPELAGO In War they are fearless and savage to the utmost degree, but in peace their disposition is mild and generous towards their friends, and the affection they bear towards their relatives is seldom found among Europeans. William Lockerby Marooned in Fiji in 1808 Fiji's Geography The 300-island archipelago of Fiji is at the bottom of the Melanesian chain of islands south from New Guinea. The archipelago is bound on the west by the Yasawas, the closest islands of the Fiji group to the Melanesian islands of Vanuatu. Melanesian influence is particularly marked among the Yasawa population, notably with regard to phisiogomy, language and socio-religious characteristics. At the easternmost edge of the archipelago lie the small and isolated islands of the Lau group. The proximity of the Laus to the islands of West Polynesia, particularly Tonga, has resulted in a considerable flow of culture and genes from Polynesia, with the result that Lau islanders both physically and culturally resemble their neighbors to the east. At the center of these two small island groups lie the four main islands of Fiji: Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni and Kandavu, which straddle the dividing line between two distinct peoples and their cultures. Fundamentally, Fijian society and culture are traditionally Melanesian, but modified by ideas and concepts introduced from Polynesia and integrated with Melanesian interests and practices.

    Fijian Culture Guide
Fijian culture is very rich in traditional beliefs and many aspects of life today are as they were a hundred years ago. Fijians live within a strict hierarchical system with the village chiefs receiving the respect of all. Fijian chiefs are hereditary titles, mostly through the male lineage, and the ranking of chiefs throughout the country is ordered into a strict hierarchical system of mataqalis vanuas and yavusas (clans and sub clans). This intense social makeup has caused a number of bitter disputes in the past and is an underlying issue in modern day politics. If you're not a chief you're referred to as a commoner and your powers are limited.
Fijians claim descendency to the yavusas and are granted village land to build a house and farm a small plantation. Land can be sub-leased (mostly to Indian sugar cane farmers, industries and tourist resorts) under the discretion of the village elders and the money used for village improvements, schools and social functions like weddings and funerals. Fund raising is an important part of the communal lifestyle of the village environment and many villages have communal land for growing yaqona and root crops to be used for village functions.
    Yaqona
Yaqona is the traditional drink of Fiji and serves as a ceremonial and social mediator between parties. Yaqona ceremonies are performed at all social and cultural events from village fund-raising to Weddings. Participants sit in a circle on the floor facing the tanoa, a large hand-carved wooden bowl used for mixing the drink. Participants drink the brown liquid from a small half coconut shell of mixed Yaqona, one at a time, amidst chanting and hand-clapping. The taste is quite unusual to the western palette and leaves a slight numbing effect on the tongue. Drunk in volume, Yaqona causes lethargy and a slight loss of co-ordination, or, as the Fijians like to put it, relaxation. Guests are also welcomed to a village through the Yaqona ceremony and many resorts hold nightly sessions. This is a great way to get to know the people. Organized day tours to a village should include the yaqona ceremony.
