Fijians still practise many traditional arts and crafts, some of which have endured the destructive impact of Western influences and the relentless campaigning of the Christian missionaries, and some which have been modified and embellished to satisfy the demands of tourism. Dance is still strong in Fiji and the narrative meke performances rest on strong oral traditions. Dances are passed down from generation to generation, and in their strict forms the dancers' bodies are said to take on spirits of the netherworld. Meke accompanied special events like births, deaths, calls to war, marriages and property exchanges. At times of war men would perform cibi with spears and clubs, while women performed dele or wate - dances which sexually humiliated enemy captives. Traditional Indian dances are still taught in Indian communities. The missionaries brought hymns and choir singing to Fiji, and local church singing is truly divine. Popular local musical artists include Seru Serevi, Danny Costello, Michelle Rounds, Karuna Gopalan, Laisa Vulakoro, the Freelancers and the Black Roses. Cassettes and CDs of local music are available in Fijian stores. Music from Bollywood films (Indian melodramas) is popular amongst Indo-Fijians and local bands play covers of Indian songs. At Indian cultural centres performances are given in traditional Indian music featuring vocal, harmonium, tabla and sitar ensembles. Fiji has been famous for pottery since the Lapita people began trading their wares deep into the South Pacific thousands of years ago. The most famous of the contemporary potters are Dian Tugea and Taraivini Wati, both of whom are featured in the Fiji Museum. Wood carving is still important, perhaps mostly because of the steady tourist demand for souvenirs to take home. Fijian carvers make war clubs, spears and cannibal forks. Drinking bowls, or

A ccording to Fijian legend, the great chief Lutunasobasoba led his people across the seas to the new land of Fiji . Most authorities agree that people came into the Pacific from Southeast Asia via Indonesia. Here the Melanesians and the Polynesians mixed to create a highly developed society long before the arrival of the Europeans. T he European discoveries of the Fiji group were accidental. The first of these discoveries was made in 1643 by the Dutch explorer, Abel Tasman and English navigators, including Captain James Cook who sailed through in 1774, and made further explorations in the 18th century. M ajor credit for the discovery and recording of the islands went to Captain William Bligh who sailed through Fiji after the mutiny on the Bounty in 1789. The first Europeans to land and live among the Fijians were shipwrecked sailors and runaway convicts from the Australian penal settlements. Sandalwood traders and missionaries came by the mid 19th century. C annibalism practised in Fiji at that time quickly disappeared as missionaries gained influence. When Ratu Seru Cakobau accepted Christianity in 1854, the rest of the country soon followed and tribal warfare came to an end.

Many features of traditional Fijian life survive; they are most evident in the elaborate investiture, marriage, and other ceremonies for high-ranking chiefs. These ceremonies provide a focus for the practicing of traditional crafts, such as the manufacture of masi, or tapa cloth, made from the bark of the paper mulberry; mat weaving; wood carving; and canoe making. Drinking of yanggona (kava, made from the root of Piper methysticum) is a part not only of important ceremonies but also of everyday life. Displays of “traditional” Fijian culture, music, and dancing make an important contribution to tourism; model villages and handicraft markets are popular. Most Indian women continue to wear the sari together with traditional jewelry in gold and silver. Traditional marriage ceremonies are practiced, as are customs such as fire walking and ritual self-torture as part of important religious ceremonies. Cinemas showing imported Indian films are popular. Diwali, the Hindu Festival of the Lights, is celebrated every October and is a public holiday. Fijian culture is more closely related to that of the Polynesians. Indians, whose ancestors were brought between 1879 and 1916 to work on British plantations in Fiji, comprise about 45 percent of the population. The remainder consists of Europeans, Chinese, other Pacific Islanders, and people of mixed ethnicity. About 52 percent of the people are Christians, with Methodists and Roman Catholics forming the largest groups. Hindus comprise 39 percent of the population, and Muslims, 8 percent.

Fiji History
Fiji's first settlers were Melanesians, who arrived there some 3,500 years ago. When European explorers landed in the islands in the mid 1600s, they discovered that outsiders could expect a warm welcome - in a Fijian oven. The islanders' custom of eating intruders and other undesirables didn't cease until the late 19th century, when Fiji became a British colony. As they did elsewhere in the region, the British imported laborers from India to work the sugar plantations. Today, Fiji's population is divided almost equally between ethnic Indians and Melanesians. Mixing between the two groups is minimal, and informal segregation runs deep at almost every level of society. Ethnic tensions flared shortly after the nation gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1970. Those tensions escalated in 1987 after elections seated a coalition government dominated by ethnic Indians. A coup led by Sitiveni Rabuka, a native Fijian military leader, overthrew the civilian government. A new constitution was written giving preferential treatment to ethnic Fijians. Pressure from the international community led to changes in the constitution in 1997, which eased tensions for a time.

Leave your shoes outside the door when entering a home and keep in mind that it's also insulting to touch someone's head - which can be tempting when you are surrounded by wide-eyed, smiling children. If you are invited to drink kava, don't ask, just enjoy the ritual and the tumb noungue, sorry - the numb tongue. When visiting a village, it is customary to present a gift of kava, which is also known as " yaqona ". The gift, (a "sevusevu"), will cost less than F$20 for a half kilo. If you are accompanied by a guide, he/she will look after that. The sevusevu is presented to the traditional head of the village ("Turaga Ni koro"). After it's been pounded into powder and mixed with water, it is usually served in the head person's house.

Home Up Observation Hives Cell-plug Queen Rearing ... Links John's Beekeeping Notebook Experiences of a Peace Corps Beekeeper in Fiji In the mid-1980's, I had an opportunity to serve in the Peace Corps doing rural development work in Fiji. My employer granted me a leave-of-absence. I sold my house and car in Houston, Texas, said goodbye to friends and began my service as a Peace Corps volunteer. Here are a few photos from my experiences. Fijian beekeeping is described on this page, and Fijian culture on the following pages. I was in Fiji for two years, mainly to provide beekeeping technical assistance to a village cooperative and farmers who were interested in beekeeping. Beekeeping was viewed by the Fiji government as a potential source of rural income that did not require a big investment to get started. Fiji was a honey-importing country and the country's goal was to be self-sufficient in honey production. An agricultural worker from New Zealand established some bee hives in the early 1980's and proved the area's potential for honey production. The U.S. Peace Corps was then asked to provide technical assistance. The cooperative had two employees for me to work with on a honey project called "Saivou Honey." I also worked with several farmers and a shopkeeper who owned their own hives.

Fiji Ecotourism and Rivers Fiji
By Dr. Kelly Bricker
Ecotourism has been defined by The International Ecotourism Society (TIES) as " responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and sustains the well-being of local people ." Rivers Fiji supports the concept of ecotourism by adhering to principles that are believed to assist in promoting sustainable tourism and responsible travel around the globe. In addition to creating a vision for the company, we believe that protecting the very environment that some have referred to as the "natural capital" of Fiji in partnership with local communities, ensures that a range of choices will be available to future generations with regards to their economy, quality of life, and environment. We believe that the partnership we have established with landowners and families of the rural highlands is built on the following principles and is essential to the long-term viability of Rivers Fiji programs:
1. Minimize negative environmental impact
