Insight on the News
Sept 2, 2002 by Tom Knott
The Olympic pinheads profess to be shocked by the news that reputed Russian crime boss Alimzhan Tokhtakhounov has been charged with fixing two figure-skating events at the Salt Lake City Winter Games. These are the same poor souls who will be shocked by the next act of terror on these shores, the same poor souls who ask, "Why do they hate us so?" The Olympic Games never have been as genuine as the fat cats would have you believe. The Games never have been as clean or as politically neutral as advertised. The white doves have never saved lives or fostered good will among nations. The white doves are just props, like the rings, heavy-handed symbols that aim to distract while one of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) whores lifts your wallet. We now know that the androgynous-looking women from the old East German police state have health problems from their years as dirty athletes. We now know the old Soviet Union also enslaved its athletes in the name of the motherland. We now know not to trust the Chinese, especially their women swimmers.

Figure Skating Figure skating is one the few judged Special Olympics sports. Special Olympics Figure Skating features singles and pairs jumps, lifts and many feats of strength and precision. Ice dancers concentrate on interpreting the rhythm and tempo of music through dance steps on the ice. Special Olympics athletes can also participate in Unified Sports® Figure Skating Ice Dancing and Pairs events. Special Olympics Unified Sports is a program that combines Special Olympics athletes and athletes without mental retardation (partners) on sports teams for training and competition. An ice dancing and pairs team would consist of one Special Olympics athlete and one partner.

Skating's roots may stretch back as far as the Middle Ages, where drawings depict ancient gods wearing huge "skis" with runners. In 1850, E.W. Bushnell introduced the first steel-bladed skates, which revolutionized the sport by making possible more intricate twists and turns.

Judging in Figure Skating, according to Skate Canada
    What do judges look for?
    Technical:

During competition judges take notes to record what elements a skater or pair completes, noting the quality of each jump, jump combination, jump sequence, spin, and footwork/field movement sequence. Even though two skaters may complete the same number and level of jumps, there may be a difference in quality. Things that help differentiate between jump skills are: speed and flow on entry and exit, air position (proper backspin position versus a wrapped free leg), correct technique on take-off, and the height and distance achieved. All are criteria that apply to jump combinations or a series of jumps. Judges also assess ice coverage and consistency in the height of each jump in the combinations or series. In spins and spin combinations judges look for proper and aesthetically pleasing positions, speed and number of revolutions, the amount of height obtained in flying spins and the ability to centre and control on entry and exit.

Thank goodness for Tonya Harding. If it weren't for her trailer trash ass, the American public would never have rejuvenated its interest in figure skating. But while most of us can sit on our couches and appreciate the grace, athleticism, and froofy costumes of figure skaters, few of us understand exactly how the sport works. How do the judges come up with their scores? What makes one jump tougher than the other? Calm yourself, gentle reader.
