Figure skating Hall of Fame
The World Figure Skating Hall of Fame and Museum, devoted to our most beautiful sport, is the only museum of its kind in the world.
Ice skating is one of many sports which evolved from everyday life. The need for winter transportation led to the development of the ice skate, first constructed from jaw bones and then wood and iron. From these rudimentary beginnings evolved the sport of figure skating, our most beautiful sport. In a similar way, the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame and Museum began humbly in Boston, Massachusetts in 1965 as a small collection of skating and records. In 1979 when the United States Figure Skating Association moved its headquarters to the foothills of the Rockies in Colorado Springs, Colorado it dedicated a large portion of its new office building to the Museum. bodyOffer(32027) The first skating club in the United States was the Philadelphia Skating Club and Humane Society, formed in 1849. The first all-iron skate, which clipped on to the boot and dispensed with straps, was also introduced in Philadelphia, in 1850. Skating club members were required to carry rope with them whenever they went skating in the event of an accident. In 1869 alone 259 rescues were reported by club members. In 1858, the first properly maintained ice rink was organized on the lake in Central Park, New York. By 1862 the first skating carnival was held on frozen Union Pond in Brooklyn. The American Skating Congress organized in 1868 but skating competitions stayed at the club level. The first American championship was not held until 1889. Figure Skating started in the Olympics in 1908, 16 years before the first separate Winter Olympics. Since that time, figure skating has been the centerpiece of the Winter Olympics and Olympic competition is at the heart of the exhibitions at the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame and Museum.

  • 2002 Winter Olympics Fixing figure skating would kill it Without the diva judges, the bad costumes and the chance for scandal, it's just a chili cookoff on ice. By King Kaufman The best part of the Friday press conference announcing that Canadians David Pelletier and Jamie Sale would be awarded the pairs figure skating gold medals that many observers thought they'd been cheated out of Monday came when a reporter was asked to stand up to ask his question. "I am standing," he said, bringing down the house with a 100-year-old vaudeville joke. Which is only appropriate, because the judging scandal that's dominated the

BBC Sport Online's Neil Hall examines whether figure skating deserves its role as an Olympic sport.
Figure skating is not a sport to shy away from controversy, especially during an Olympic year. The awarding of the gold medal to the Russian pairing rather than to the Canadians has ensured that 2002 is no different. It is a decision that has rocked the sport to its core, forcing the International Skating Union to launch an inquiry into the judging. Figure skating's shame Outcry as Russian pair win gold in Utah Judges suspended after row at world championships Canadian pair claim Russia and France conspired against them at Nagano Games In a sport reliant upon subjectivity to decide its winners and losers, any doubts about the neutrality of the judges discredits it almost entirely. And this is not the first cry of foul in the sport's recent history.

    About

Now somewhere between art and sport, skating on ice was, for hundreds of years, a rapid form of transportation across frozen lakes, rivers and canals, and the oldest form of skate (a length of bone attached to sandals with thongs) dates back to 20,000 years B.C.. The Dutch were some of the early pioneers and as far back as the 13th century maintained communication by skating from village to village along frozen rivers and canals. Skating spread across the channel to England and soon the first clubs and artificial rinks had begun springing up across the country. Before long the sport had spread right across Europe and had reached North America . Several kings of England, Marie Antoinette, Napoleon I, the great German poet Goethe and Napoleon III all loved to take to the ice. The Olympic Winter Games present three disciplines of skating: Figure Skating, including singles for Men and Ladies, pairs (a man and a lady) and ice dancing, Speed Skating, and Short Track Speed Skating for Men and Ladies.

During this time of uncertainty, turmoil and waiting for the next sex scandal to break, many people will be focusing their attention to Nagano, Japan, where athletes have gathered for the Winter Olympics. Since most of us have Southern backgrounds, the Winter Olympics are entertaining to us because we get to see people in extremely cold settings move at lightning speed. The closest some of us come to that is trying to take a shower in university housing before the hot water runs out. Americans traditionally don't do well in the Winter Olympics. That's because Americans don't like to get out in the cold. Which would you rather do: Go out and practice speed skating in subfreezing temperatures until your thighs got as big as a trailer park hairdo or sit in front of your TV in a daze watching yet another Andy Griffith rerun. Still, there are a couple of things at the Nagano games that will grab our attention. Crazy individuals racing down a mountain on pieces of wood the size of Kate Moss. Burly guys with no teeth and sticks knocking the crap out of people. Even though Knoxville lost its hockey team last season, we do have a couple of similar organizations in the area. One is the UT hockey club. The one thing that seems to attract the attention of most Americans during the Winter Olympics is figure skating. Maybe it's because of the combination of artistry and athleticism. Maybe it's because people who enjoy figure skating have no life.

    Athlete Eligibility and Classification
Figure skaters who compete in Special Olympics events must have a primary diagnosis of mental retardation. They are classified according to a process called divisioning in which athletes are grouped by ability level for competition. In figure skating, classification is based upon scores from a series of individual skills tests that are graded by difficulty. There are 11 skills competitions, all of which are described in the figure skating rules section of the Special Olympics web site at http://www.specialolympics.org
