Figure skating It's hard to define the hook of figure skating. To begin with, there's the pageantry factor that makes aesthetics paramount.
It also features an impressive cast of athletes seeking expressive and athletic perfection. And to heighten the drama, figure skating events take place in an environment of open and fierce rivalries between favourites and underdogs.
Be expressive, spin tightly and jump fast Under this microscope, nerves can be the big determinant between perfection found and lost. Like most sports, figure skating requires tremendous psychological, as well as physical discipline.
"When nerves come into play you tend to get stiff, you tend to not bend your knees," explains CBC analyst Barbara Underhill. "No matter how talented you are, that doesn't matter anymore unless you can be able to control your nerves and be able to focus."
For all the lavish costumes and theatrical gestures of figure skating, the mental demands of the sport mean that skaters have to sustain their tenacity through a series of battles, from jump to jump, spin to step, outside edge to inside edge, short program to free program.

Bush U.S. Military al-Qaeda Osama bin Laden That same day the I.O.C. executive board sent a letter to Cinquanta urging quick action, a message he had already received in person from Rogge. "We didn't step in on the merits of the matter," says Olympic committee general director Francois Carrard, "but we wanted it expedited as quickly as possible." Toronto's Globe and Mail reported last week that on Thursday afternoon Rogge told Cinquanta he could take the matter out of the I.S.U.'s hands entirely because Le Gougne had violated the Olympic oath she took during the opening ceremonies of the Games. To avoid that embarrassment, Cinquanta would have to act fast. On Thursday night the I.S.U. board met to draft its plan. Le Gougne, an international judge for 15 years, would be suspended indefinitely for failing to tell the skating union immediately that she had been approached by people seeking to sway her vote. The only equitable solution would be to award a second set of gold medals to Sale and Pelletier while allowing Berezhnaya and Sikharulidze to keep theirs. For the first time, an Olympic medal decision would be changed as a result of a judge's misconduct. By that time Rogge and the other members of the Olympic committee were aware that the Canadian Olympic Association had filed an application before the court of Arbitration for Sport, a non-Olympic body, asking the court to hear its request for a second gold medal and to compel the pairs judges to testify. The court agreed to hear the case on Friday. That threatened to carry the dispute to a forum beyond the control of the committee and the I.S.U. On Friday morning the nine-member I.O.C. board ratified the I.S.U. plan by a 7-1 vote. China opposed it; Russia abstained.

    http://btc.montana.edu/olympics/nutrition/default.htm
Welcome to Sports Nutrition! Science is a powerful asset for athletes who want to use nutrition to their advantage. Whether an Olympic medal is won by tenths of a second in a ski race, decimal points in a figure skating competition, or goals in an ice hockey game, an athlete's nutritional status makes a critical difference in reaching peak performance. This course explores the science of sports nutrition and shows how to apply nutrition principles to benefit an athlete's training and performance.
Nutrition and physical training are connected long term athletic success depends on meeting day-to-day nutritional needs. For example, maintaining optimal hydration status and sufficient muscle glycogen stores delays the onset of fatigue and enables athletes to train longer before tiring. Also, although the stress of exercise training stimulates physiological improvement, adaptations to physical stress actually occurs in the recovery period following the exercise sessions. Satisfying an athlete's needs for rehydrating, refueling, and rest are essential components of the recovery process. Check out the Physiology and Psychology section for more information on the physiological aspects of exercise training.
Although sport nutrition basics are similar for all athletes, important differences exist for individual athletes in various sports. The focus here is on the nutritional needs of selected endurance sports and strength/power sports. One of these sports, women's ice hockey, has its debut as a medal sport in the 1998 Winter Olympics!

    Introduction
Many Winter Olympic sports are greatly dependent on technique, engineering, and/or gravity. For example, during luge, while gravity is accelerating the sled up to 80 mph down the track, the slider must use good technique to steer the sled and minimize air resistance. To excel in these type of sports, it is helpful to have a full appreciation of physics and biomechanics. Physics is a broad field which includes mechanics, electricity, magnetism, optics, etc., and biomechanics is the study of the mechanics of living systems. In the module we will use the sports of luge and figure skating to teach you four basic mechanical concepts: linear kinematics, linear dynamics, projectile motion, and conservation of angular momentum. In addition, we have developed a glossary which defines and illustrates all the physics terminology you will need to complete this module.

After winning four of the past five World Figure Skating Championships, Michelle Kwan won the bronze medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics. She's heading to Salt Lake City with a new coach and a new routine but has no plans on changing her skating superstitions. Like in every other competition, Michelle Kwan wears a gold dragon necklace which her Grandma gave her many years ago. Michelle grew up in Corsatta, California. She became interested in figure skating when she was five, after watching her older brother, Ron, play hockey. When Michelle Kwan was six, she entered her first skating competition and finished first. Michelle skated at the World Championships for the first time in 1994, when she was just 13 years old. She finished eighth and let the world know that there were more great things to come. Michelle Kwan would finish fourth in 1995 and won her first world title in 1996. She would go on to win world titles again in '98, '00 and '01. Even though Michelle Kwan won in 2001, she hasn't been skating her best since then. She finished second to Irina Slutskaya at the Goodwill Games and had a weak performance at Skate America in October 2001 - her first competition since firing long time coach, Frank Carroll. Michelle will still be a favorite at Salt Lake City and her rivalry with Irina Slutskaya of Russia should be one of the most watched matchups of

30-Second Guide to Figure Skating Figure skating is one of the most popular of all Olympic sports, and it's also one of the few judged sports in winter Olympic competition today. The sport includes singles and pairs disciplines, as well as ice dancing. Singles and pairs figure skating feature jumps, lifts and many feats of strength and precision. Ice dancers cannot use of many of the most spectacular elements that other skaters can use, but instead concentrate on interpreting the rhythm and tempo of music through dance steps on the ice. Did You Know?
    • U.S. figure skaters have won more Olympic medals (40) than any other country in history. Additionally, the U.S. has won at least one medal in 14 consecutive Olympic Winter Games. Figure skating regularly draws some of the largest number of television viewers during its Olympic and other high profile events. Figure skating broadcasts from the 1994 Games in Lillehammer had the sixth highest rating in television history at that time. Synchronized skating, a non-Olympic discipline, is the fastest growing segment of figure skating. The first-ever World Synchronized Skating Championships was held in Minneapolis, Minn., in 2000.

    30-Second History
    • Figure skating grew out of the development of the ice skate. When the iron blade replaced the wood or bone runner, skating became a winter pastime. The steel blade created a sport of compulsory skating, which led to the modern birth of figure skating. Figure skating was one of the first winter-type Olympic sports, having debuted at the Olympic Summer Games in 1908.
    Timeline
~300 AD The first ice skates were created in northern Europe. They were used for transportation and made from wood, bone or antlers. Wood runners gave way to iron blades for skates. The first steel blades are created for skates, which allowed for twists and turns to be performed. An American ballet dancer introduced a new style of skating that resembled today's fluid, graceful and dance-like sport. He also created the first all-in-one shoe and blade. The International Skating United was founded to govern the growing sport of skating in the world. Figure skating debuted at the Olympic Summer Games in London, England, with men's and women's singles, and pairs. The United States Figure Skating Association was founded based on the principles of two similar organizations.
