Olympic Sports Olympic Sports
The various international sports federations choose the disciplines, events, and sports for each of the Olympic Games. To qualify as an Olympic sport, that sport must be widely practiced by men in at least 75 countries and on four continents, and by women in at least 40 countries and on three continents. Sports widely practiced in at least 25 countries and on three continents may be included in the Winter Games. In the past, the host country occasionally has been allowed to include one or two demonstration sports. If there is enough interest, they may be selected as medal sports in future Games. For example, tennis and baseball were demonstration sports before becoming medal sports in the 1988 and 1992 Games, respectively. Check out More Sports for all the action!

History Olympic Venues Olympic Sports Greece Today ... Information
Hockey Indoor Outdoor Discontinued Olympic Sports Hockey first made its appearance in England, as evidenced on pictures of people playing a similar game on the stained glass windows at the Canterbury Cathedral c.1180 AD and the Gloucester Cathedral c.1350 AD. It is said that field hockey had become so popular in the middle ages that it was banned because the soldiers played the game instead of concentrating on practicing archery for the defense of the country. Its name probably derives from the French "hocquet", which means a "shepherd's crook".
Modern field hockey first appeared in the UK during the 1880s, entering the Olympic Games programme in 1908 in London for men and in 1980 in Moscow for women.
The same as in soccer, the game is played between two teams of eleven players on a 91.4 x 54.8 meter (100 x 60 yard) rectangular field covered with grass - or synthetic grass, which is a smooth, carpet-like material. Each player carries a "stick", about 90 centimeters long and traditionally made of wood, with a rounded handle of approximately 2.5 centimeters diameter at the top, flattening out on one side and with a hook at the bottom, with which they can hit the ball and score. The team with the most goals after two 35-minute halves wins the game. The game is traditionally ruled by India -an eight-time gold medal Olympic winner - but in the last two Olympiads it was the Netherlands that took first place.

30-Second History
  • Ice hockey was created in Canada by native Indians in the early 1800s. Until 1980, ice hockey was widely reported to have been created by British soldiers in the mid-1800s and spread throughout Canada as a cross between English field hockey and Indian lacrosse. Men's ice hockey became an official event in the Olympic Games in 1920. Women's ice hockey was added to the Olympic schedule in 1998.
Timeline
