Related Category: Sports hockey, field, outdoor stick and ball game. Field hockey, like many sports, is of obscure origins, but traces in one form or another to the ancient Egyptians and Persians, making it one of the world's oldest known sports. London's Wimbledon Hockey Club (organized 1883) standardized the game after many centuries of informal play in England, and it thereafter spread to other countries, particularly those in Europe and the British empire. Men have played field hockey in the United States since 1890, but the Field Hockey Association of America, which regulates men's play, was not formed until 1930, and the sport continues to appeal very little to American males. In Olympic competition, where men's field hockey first appeared in 1908, India, Great Britain, and Pakistan have dominated. Although the sport has been very popular among high school and collegiate women in the United States since 1901, particularly in the East, it has been a women's Olympic event only since 1980. Rules for men and women are essentially the same. The game is played on a level field, measuring 50 to 60 yd by 90 to 100 yd (46 to 55 m by 82 to 91 m), by two teams of 11 players each (five forwards, three halfbacks, two fullbacks, and a goalkeeper). A face-off in the center of the field starts the game. Teams direct their play toward advancing the ball : made of white leather over a cork and twine center and about 9 in. (23 cm) in circumference : down the field with their sticks (wooden, with a flat head on only one side of the striking surface). A point is scored by putting the ball through goal posts, which are 7 ft (2.13 m) high, 12 ft (3.66 m) apart, and joined by a net. Play can be physically punishing and fouls result in penalty strokes and free hits.

MADRID (Spain): Pakistan were too experienced for Belgium, taking the match 2-0 in Pool B of the men's Olympic qualifying field hockey tournament here on Thursday.
Belgium played a defensive first half, using their well-organized deep four of Cedric Degreve in goal and fullbacks Thierry Renaer, Gilles Petre and Marc Caudron to keep Pakistan outside Belgium's circle. Muhammad Saqlain put his own team under pressure for 10 minutes, serving a suspension which gave Belgium two wasted chances to score.
Pakistan's Rehan wingers, Butt and Muhammad Shabbir harried Belgium and despite 63 percent of the possession and four penalty corners in the first half, Pakistan could not score. Degreve charged two corner attempts by Sohail Abbas and two of his flicks were deflected away by the runner.
After the break, Shakeel Abbasi missed an open goal when Mudassar Ali Khan drew Degreve and passed to the left of circle to allow Abbasi an unchallenged shot, driven wide to the left of the open goal. Sohail Abbas aided the conversion of Pakistan's fifth penalty corner, pushing low and slow for Kashif Jawad to swoop in from the right of the circle and deflect the pass up and into goal.

MADRID (Spain): Four penalty corner conversions from four attempts by Sohail Abbas inspired Pakistan to a 5-3 win over India in Pool A of the men's Olympic qualifying field hockey tournament.
Abbas put in his first corner conversion after just two minutes with a second 26 minutes later before Deepak Thakur clawed one back for India after 33 minutes with a juggled shot into goal from a long corner centre by Gagan Ajit Singh.
A minute later Rehan Butt hit back with Pakistan's only field goal which put them 3-1 ahead at the break.
Abbas converted his third corner six minutes after the break and India came back with two goals in the next three minutes.

The Olympic Games were held every four years for more than 1,000 years, until a.d. 393, when a Roman emperor stopped them.
Some Modern Olympic Firsts The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece. A total of 312 athletes from 13 nations participated in nine sports. Women competed in the Olympic Games for the first time. For the first time, medals were awarded to the first three people to finish each event The Olympic flag was raised for the first time, and the Olympic oath was introduced. The five interlaced rings of the flag represent: Africa, America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. The first Winter Olympics, featuring skiing and skating events, were held. The Olympic flame was introduced at the Olympic Games. A relay of runners carries a torch with the flame from Olympia, Greece, to the site of each Olympics. Starting with the 1994 Winter Olympics, the winter and summer Games have been held two years apart, instead of in the same year.

The Switzerland-based CAS dismissed claims by the Greeks that they deserved a place in their own Olympics despite not meeting the standards laid out by the International Hockey Federation (FIH). An FIH release, confirming that the appeal filed by the Hellenic Hockey Federation had been dismissed, said South Africa were awarded the final qualifying place in the 12-nation men's competition at Athens. Greece would have gained a direct entry had they qualified for last year's European Nations Cup in 2003, but failed to do so.

First State field hockey scene is fertile turf
By BUDDY HURLOCK

Staff reporter
Karen Shelton, the field hockey coach at the University of North Carolina, would prefer that no other colleges knew about Delaware's high school talent. "We'd kind of like to keep it a secret," kidded Shelton, who since 1981 has guided North Carolina to 10 national championship games, winning four. But the secret is out. Delaware talent is spread throughout the nation's best teams. Maryland's Jackie Ciconte, a Tatnall graduate, is one of the leading scorers in NCAA Division I. The Terrapins were ranked No. 3 by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association on Oct. 21. New rankings will be released today.
