Dutch men know the competition will be tough
Click the image to launch the clip The Dutch hockey team is confident they can repeat as Olympic champions in Sydney. Start Archives Click here for Archives of Olympic Update. As Olympic gold medal defenders and reigning world champions, the Dutch men's hockey team is the favorite to take gold at Sydney this year, as long as they don't become too overconfident. "Four years ago we were a favorite, but now we are the big favorite because we are the Olympic Champion and World Cup holder," says striker Teun de Nooijer. "Everybody is looking at us, so there will be more pressure that four years ago. But I am confident. We train a lot and hard. We will be fit. What more can we do?" Earlier this year, the Dutch took the third most important competition in the hockey calendar, the Champions Trophy. And 10 of the 11 core players were on the gold medal team in Atlanta. Is another gold medal a foregone conclusion?

Netherlands repeat on penalties
Latest: Sunday October 08, 2000 05:29 PM Jean-Pierre Muller/AFP SYDNEY, Australia (CNNSI.com) The Netherlands defeated South Korea on penalty strokes to retain the men's field hockey gold medal on Saturday. South Korea send the match into overtime by scoring two goals in the final five minutes. The Dutch prevailed on penalties 5-4. It was the second time in two matches the Netherlands needed penalties to win and the first time penalty strokes were needed to decide an Olympic hockey title. After having beaten host Australia's Kookaburas 5-4 on penalties in Thursday's semifinals after a 0-0 draw, Saturday's victory made the Netherlands the first team to successfully defend its title since India in 1956 in Melbourne. The last of Dutch captain Stefan Veen's three-goal performance in the 64th minute gave the Netherlands a 3-1 lead and appeared to clinch the victory.

Olympic Field Hockey Medalists
History
Men's field hockey has been an Olympic sport since 1908 and women's field hockey was added to the program in 1980. In 1920 and 1932, the men's standings were determined by a round robin tournament and the women's version of the sport used a round robin tournament in 1980 and 1984. In all other years, a single-elimination tournament has been used, with a championship game to decide the gold and silver medals. For those years, the score shown under "Final" is the score of the gold medal game. The tournaments begin with two pools of teams playing preliminary round tournaments. In men's play, the top two teams in each pool advance to the semi-finals. In the women's tournament, the top three teams advance. Top of page

SNYDER OFFERS LEAGUE BUTTLOAD OF CASH FOR CHAMPIONSHIP

WASHINGTON, DC
- The NFL's newest megalomaniac, Washington Redskin owner Daniel Snyder has informed the NFL that he wishes to buy outright the NFL championship for the 2000-2001 season for a buttload of cash. In a complicated deal Snyder has offered a package totaling over one hundred million dollars to the league and to the various teams in the league. (more) Are These Really Countries? Micronesia? Cook Islands? Andorra? Who in the world let these "countries" in the Olympics. Honestly, Micronesia is so small that they gave themselves a minuscule name. I mean I don't know a damn thing about the country, but I sure know that it must be small. Never a big fan of gymnastics before, the sudden and constant exposure to men's and women's gymnastics has apparently sent Bedford over-the-edge. • Constance M.K. Applebee is credited with bringing field hockey to the United States in 1901. She had come from England to the U.S. to take a physical education course at Harvard University. The first game she organized was played on concrete with ice hockey sticks in a courtyard at Harvard. In 1922 women formed the United States Field Hockey Association. Today the association has over 15,000 members. Field hockey was added to the Olympics in 1980. The Zimbabwe women's field hockey team went undefeated in the tournament to win the first Olympic gold medal. In 1996, Australia took the gold medal, becoming the first country to win two golds in women's field hockey. At the 2000 Sydney Games, the Aussies defended their title on their home turf for their third gold. Click here to see a complete list of Olympic winners. Field Hockey First Olympic Appearance: 1908 (men), 1980 (women) by John Gettings
    Did You Know?
India has won eight gold medals at the Olympics - all of them in this event. From 1928-56 India won six consecutive gold medals in men's field hockey, winning all 24 Olympic matches it played during that span while outscoring their opponents 178-7.
Historians agree that this sport was being played by civilizations that predate the Ancient Olympic games by more than 1,000 years. Drawings on ancient Egyptian tombs offer evidence that this was the first of all the stick-and-ball sports. The current form of the game gained popularity throughout the British Empire in the 19th century, especially in the region that includes India and Pakistan. The 2000 Sydney games saw elimination of the offsides rule, formally rescinded by the International Hockey Federation in 1998 to foster improved scoring. The game is played on an artificial turf field that is 100 yards by 60 yards. The goals are seven feet high and 12 feet wide (a soccer goal is one foot taller and twice the width). In front of each goal is a semi-circle measured 16 yards from each goal post. All scoring must happen from within this area called the goal circle.
