Stcay Dragila just missed her own world record
American Stacy Dragila made Olympic history on Monday as she won the first women's pole vault gold. Dragila, the world record holder, cleared 4.60 metres to beat Australia's Russian-born Tatiana Grigorieva into second place. The 29-year-old Californian set a new world's best at the US trials in July of 4.63m, but her efforts to raise that mark by a further two centimetres failed. Afterwards she said: "Winning and making history. I don't think there's anything better. I was an average athlete when I took up the pole vault seven years ago. To go on the Olympic stage is a dream come true." Dragila has a habit of winning inaugural events having won the first women's world indoor title in 1997 and the first outdoor title in 1999. World bronze medallist Grigorieva cleared 4.55m with Vala Flosadottir of Iceland third (4.50). Former world record holder and home favourite Emma George failed to qualify for the final.

30-Second History
  • Ice hockey was created in Canada by native Indians in the early 1800s. Until 1980, ice hockey was widely reported to have been created by British soldiers in the mid-1800s and spread throughout Canada as a cross between English field hockey and Indian lacrosse. Men's ice hockey became an official event in the Olympic Games in 1920. Women's ice hockey was added to the Olympic schedule in 1998.
Timeline
Early hockey-like game played by the Micmac Indians in Nova Scotia, Canada, was spread around Canada by early immigrants and military personnel. Rules were borrowed heavily from field hockey. The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) was formed using the French name Ligue Internationale de Hockey sur Glace (LIHG). Ice hockey debuted at the Olympic Games in Antwerp, Belgium. The U.S. won a silver medal. The introduction of the National Hockey League (NHL) in the United States with the first U.S. NHL team, the Boston Bruins.

OLYMPIC CHANGES: DOLLARS AND SENSE
TUESDAY 7/23/96
It's been 10 years since the distinction between "amateur" and "professional" was deleted from the Olympic charter and what has it bought us? Many argue that the advent of professionalism has devalued the Olympic spirit envisioned by the modern event's originator, France's Pierre de Coubertin. De Coubertin believed the modern Olympics should be a pristine, apolitical arena where "amateur" athletes indulge in pure competition and rejoice in the heights of human achievement. The Olympic mystique suggested that anyone could be a contender. Ordinary people dreamed of competing in the Olympics, and the dreams spurred athletic activity all over the world. Now that has changed... Olympic athletes have sponsors, expensive equipment, and the luxury of training full time. Money has changed the look and feel of the Olympics in the second half of the 20th century. July 17, 1996:

UConn Ice Hockey Head Coach Bruce Marshall
In his 15 seasons at the helm of the Connecticut men’s ice hockey program, head coach Bruce Marshall has made strides no other UConn ice hockey coach has made and proven the Huskies worthy of their recent Division I status. In UConn’s second season as a Division I program in 2000 and as a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), Marshall and the Huskies earned their first-ever conference championship in a 6-1 win over Iona in the 2000 Easton/MAAC Championship game. After posting a 20-10-4 record in the 1998-99 season, the second 20-plus season in the program’s history, the 1999-2000 season added a 19-16-1 record, including winning the MAAC title. Through 15-seasons as head coach, Marshall has led the Huskies to the MAAC Championship Final game, to the semifinals of the MAAC Championship twice, three MAAC quarterfinal games, eight ECAC East tournament berths, four ECAC semifinals and one ECAC championship appearance. Marshall’s career record stands at 222-182-38 (.502). Included in Marshall’s 15-seasons at the helm of UConn’s ice hockey program, the Huskies have produced seven All-Americans, eight all-conference members and a MAAC Defensive Rookie of the Year (since the MAAC formed in 1998-99).

History of Our Olympic Games Welcome to our web site!
Have you watched the Olympics on TV or better yet been there to experience it live? Did you ever wondered why the Olympics started? I did! If you want to be on or go to the Olympics, I think you first need to know about it. Why did the games start? At the original Olympics what games did they play? Also what games do they play today? Now, get ready for the world of the Olympics.
Have you ever wondered how the Olympics started? In Olympia, Greece the Olympic Games were held every four years. First Olympic game was recorded in 776 BC; that was about 3,000 years ago. At that time this great festival took place to honor the Greek gods. Olympics were held during the great festival. My resources say Olympics were held to please the various gods. One God, in particular, the most important was called Zeus. The Olympics were called Olympiad in Greece.
Now we know where the games are held, but we dont know what games they played? In the first thirteen Olympic games, there was only one event and that was the sprint. The sprint event was about one hundred and eight meters in length. Then later Pentathlon was added and it had different events. There was discus, javelin, jumping, running, and wrestling. After a while, they added Equestrian events and that included chariot racing and riding. The Ancient Olympics did have lots of events. They had two major events Equestrian and Pentathlon events.

A game of field hockey in progress Field hockey is a popular Olympic sport in many countries around the world, with India Pakistan Germany The Netherlands and Australia the most successful international teams. It is popular for both men and women in these countries. In these countries, where (with the exception of Germany) ice hockey is not common, it is generally referred to simply as "hockey". In the United States it is widely regarded as a women's sport, but there are men's leagues as well, mostly on a collegiate level. Table of contents 1 Origins

Origins
Though the name hockey, from the French word hoquet ,dates to the 18th century, sports of the general type have existed for thousands of years in many cultures. Modern field hockey was born with the formation of The Hockey Association in England on January 18 . The current governing body of the global game is the Fédération Internationale de Hockey (International Hockey Federation or FIH). edit
The Field of Play
Larger Diagram The game is played between two teams of eleven players on a 91.4 x 54.8 metre (100 x 60 yard) rectangular field. Most modern fields are covered with "synthetic grass" - a smooth, carpet-like material, but the game was traditionally played on live grass. At each end there is a goal approximately 2.1 metres high, and 3.7 metres wide, and a semi-circle approximately 16 metres from the goal known as the "arc",or "shooting circle", with a dotted line one meter from the semi-circle, as well as lines across the field approximately 24 metres from each end-line and in the centre of the field.
