What's New? October 28, 2002 CAC recognizes legendary field hockey coach Marina van der Merwe in honour of Women's History Month OTTAWA - In honour of Women's History Month , the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) is honouring four of Canada's greatest women coaches based on this year's theme, Women and Sports - Champions Forever! Each week during the month of October, CAC will profile a legendary woman coach who has made a significant contribution to coaching and to sport in Canada. This week's feature is Marina van der Merwe , the head coach of Canada's women's field hockey team from 1976 to 1995. Marina van der Merwe produced one of Canada's most impressive success stories in team sports. When she was named head coach of the national team in 1976, the prospect of Canada being an international powerhouse in women's field hockey seemed almost as logical as Mexico being near the top in ice hockey.
But in the 1980s and early 1990s, van der Merwe realized what many considered an impossible task. She took over the 16th ranked Canadian women's field hockey team and led it to three Olympic Games appearances (1984, 1988, 1992) and silver and bronze medals at the 1983 and 1986 World Cups respectively. Over that period, the women's field hockey squad was Canada's best summer sports team, male or female.
"I expected my players to give their very best effort at all times," said the now retired van der Merwe, who resides in Toronto. "I didn't want to see any regression. It often made for tough decisions. These are people that you don't

Katie King
As a softball player at Salem High, Katie King played for four Class L champions, won all 44 of her pitching decisions, and became the team’s best hitter. Continuing her career at Brown University, she earned Ivy League Player of the Year honors as the Bears’ top pitcher and most productive member of the batting order.
And softball was her second-best sport.
King is better known in the annals of Brown athletics as the school’s all-time women’s ice hockey leader in goals and total points, with 123 and 206 from 1993-97, a period in which she won three Ivy League Player of the Year awards. Nationally, she’s recognized as a star forward on the 1998 gold medal-winning U.S. Olympic team and a probable member of the 2002 squad.
She also is among those receiving honorable mention in the countdown to The Union Leader’s top 10 New Hampshire athletes of the 20th century.

Alex Carre was in charge of the largest multi-sport team ever assembled by Canada at the largest athletic competition ever staged in this country the XIII Pan American Games in Winnipeg, which ended last weekend. "Personally it was an immense challenge and the pinnacle of my life's work in sports as an athlete, coach and administrator," says the associate professor in Human Kinetics and Canada's chef de mission for the games. UBC athletes played a role in Canada's record 196 medals which included 64 gold, 52 silver and 80 bronze earning 15 medals. "Canadians should be pleased and proud. These are our best-ever results," he says. "Our athletes turned in outstanding performances and are now competitive in every sport at the elite Pan Am level." Carre who asked Canadians to keep the motto, `A goal is a dream with a deadline,' in mind was appointed to the key position three years ago. He was responsible for Canada's 624 athletes and 264 coaches, trainers and officials. "My job included overseeing everything from accommodations to making certain that all the conditions for fair and equitable competition were met," he says.

About Us Rutgers adds four new members to Olympic HOF By Brent Johnson, Staff Writer Published: 2/10/2003 Four new members of the Rutgers Olympic Sports Hall of Fame were enshrined by the University's Division of Intercollegiate Athletics this past Saturday in a ceremony held at the Louis Brown Athletic Center during halftime of the men's basketball game vs. Boston College. This year's inductees, who represent five different sports and 45 years of athletic success at RU, include Balazs Koranyi ('97, track and field), Heidi Faith ('77, field hockey, lacrosse), Jim Monahan ('52, baseball), and Tom Sweeney ('80, lacrosse). "The committee has done an admirable job of selecting those who truly reflect the type of excellence we strive to achieve at Rutgers, both during their time here and beyond," Director of Athletics Robert E. Mulcahy III said in a prepared statement. A four-time All-American and three-time Big East Champion, Koranyi was the Scarlet Knights' top performer in the 800 meters from 1993 to 1997. In addition to helping the Rutgers track program to five Metropolitan Championships, he is also the school record-holder in both the indoor and outdoor 800 meter events. Displaying excellence on and off the field, Koranyi was a First Team Academic All-America selection in 1996 and earned the 1997 Leslie Coursen Award as the University's most outstanding senior male athlete.

ASTHMA COMMON IN U.S. OLYMPIC ATHLETES
WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE 1996 OLYMPIC GAMES,
RESEARCHERS REPORT IOWA CITY, Iowa - At least one in six athletes representing the United States in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta had a history of asthma, according to a study published today in the November issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. Researchers at the University of Iowa and the U.S. Olympic Committee sought to examine how many athletes in the 1996 Olympic Games had a history of asthma, had taken asthma medications or had symptoms that suggested asthma. Asthma is a lung disease characterized by tightness in the chest, difficulty breathing, wheezing and cough. To examine the prevalence of asthma, John Weiler, M.D., University of Iowa professor of internal medicine, and his co-authors analyzed responses from an extensive, mandatory medical history questionnaire required of all U.S. Olympic athletes competing in the 1996 Olympic Games. The questionnaire was completed during team processing in Atlanta two weeks prior to participation in the Olympic Games and responses were reviewed with each athlete. The questionnaire, designed by the U.S. Olympic Committee Sports Medicine Division with input from Weiler and his colleagues, included specific questions regarding allergic and respiratory disorders.

    Did You Know?
India has won eight gold medals at the Olympics - all of them in this event. From 1928-56 India won six consecutive gold medals in men's field hockey, winning all 24 Olympic matches it played during that span while outscoring their opponents 178-7.
Historians agree that this sport was being played by civilizations that predate the Ancient Olympic games by more than 1,000 years. Drawings on ancient Egyptian tombs offer evidence that this was the first of all the stick-and-ball sports. The current form of the game gained popularity throughout the British Empire in the 19th century, especially in the region that includes India and Pakistan. The 2000 Sydney games saw elimination of the offsides rule, formally rescinded by the International Hockey Federation in 1998 to foster improved scoring. The game is played on an artificial turf field that is 100 yards by 60 yards. The goals are seven feet high and 12 feet wide (a soccer goal is one foot taller and twice the width). In front of each goal is a semi-circle measured 16 yards from each goal post. All scoring must happen from within this area called the goal circle.

ANCIENT ORIGINS HOST NATION AIMS TO DOMINATE ANCIENT GAME IN MODERN ERA
Romans, Persians, Greeks, Arabs and Aztecs were enjoying jolly hockey sticks long before the fathers of the modern Games dreamt their dream. Indeed, Cleopatra and her descendants might once have peered out over a hockey match if sketches found in a tomb at Ben Hasan in Egypt that dates back 4,000 years are to be believed; they show a form of the game being played with sticks and rocks. Historians also believe that the native Indian populations of North America played a long version of the game, in which the goals were miles apart and hundreds of players took part throughout a whole day. What the called their game we may never know, as hockey is thought to be derived from the French word hocquet, meaning shepherd's crook, the shape of a hockey stick. The modern game, field hockey, was developed largely in English schools in the 1800s and was spread through the British Empire by the Army. Rules were standardised by the London Hockey Association after it was formed in 1886. It was not until 38 years later that the International Hockey Federation was born in Paris, while the federation for women's hockey followed in 1927.

The Arabs, Greeks, Romans, Persians and Ethiopians all played variations of the game. Several centuries before Christopher Columbus found his New World, the Aztec Indians were playing it in Central America. The Araucano Indians of Argentina invented a game similar to hockey called Cheuca, believing it would make them better warriors. hockie The modern game we know as hockey - or field hockey, for those distinguishing it from ice hockey - evolved in the British Isles in the 19th century. It was a popular English school game, possibly adapted from the Irish game of hurling. "India won six straight Olympic gold medals while winning 24 consecutive matches between 1924 and 1956, a record likely to stand through the ages. The Indians have won two more gold since then."
