Now, an injury has forced him to abandon that dream and turn professional. IN January of 2004, Casal was hurt durring the U.S. National Championships, and will not be able to make the Olympic team. Instead 18-year-old Junior Welterweight turned professional in March, signing a multi year contract with manager Shelly Finkel. Durring a sucessful amateur career, Casal won the 2002 National Junior Olympics the 2003 "under 19" World Chamtpionship and several New York State Golden Gloves Tiltles. None of the Buffalo/Rochester area sailors managed to qualify for the 2004 Olympics in recent trials at Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and Houston, Texas. In Florida the weekend of 3-21-4, Kathleen Tocke and Jodie Swanson finished 4th in the Yngling Class and 5th in the European Class respectively. Both are members of the storied Buffalo Canoe Club. Also missing the cut were Cory Sertl of Rochester who was a member of Jodie Swanson's crew, and Kurt Taulbee of Williamsville, who finished 12th in the Laser Class last November in Houston.

Buried deep in Egypt’s Nile Valley lies the village of Beni Hasan, known for its ancient cliff tombs dating from 2000 BC. A drawing decorates one tomb, showing two men holding sticks with curved ends and standing over a ball. Add synthetic turf and shin guards, and it might pass for hockey at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
One of the world’s oldest known sports, hockey predates the Ancient Games of Olympia by perhaps 1200 years or more. Indeed, historians believe it existed in many of the world’s early civilizations.
The Arabs, Greeks, Romans, Persians and Ethiopians all played variations of the game. Several centuries before Christopher Columbus found his New World, the Aztec Indians were playing it in Central America. The Araucano Indians of Argentina invented a game similar to hockey called Cheuca, believing it would make them better warriors.
Yet, the term `hockey’ is believed to be of French origin. A 16th century Irish document refers to `hockie’, but the term probably comes from the French hocquet, meaning `a shepherd’s crook.’
The modern game we know as hockey - or field hockey, for those distinguishing it from ice hockey - evolved in the British Isles in the 19th century. It was a popular English school game, possibly adapted from the Irish game of hurling.

Baker Field Makes the Big Time as 2012 Olympics Site
    By Josie Swindler
Spectator Staff Writer April 23, 2004
If New York City is chosen to host the 2012 summer Olympic Games, Olympic athletes won't be the only ones playing at the best sports facilities on earth. NYC2012, the organization working to woo the International Olympic Committee before the winning bid is announced in July 2005, has outlined its proposed sports facilities for each Olympic event, and Columbia's own Baker Field made the cut. Baker Field, Columbia's major athletic facility at 218th Street, has been pegged as the 2012 field hockey venue, according to both NYC2012's Director of Venue Planning Marco Diaz-Gonzalez and Columbia Associate Director of Athletics Al Carlson. New York's Olympic Committee will finance any and all renovations necessary to make Baker Field the most up-to-date, technically-sound field hockey facility in the worldrenovations that could cost upwards of $25 million, according to Carlson, who is also the men's and women's golf coach. "It's a win-win for us if it happens," Carlson said.

Hockey, or field Hockey, is a very popular sport.  Men and women, regardless of age, play Hockey for recreational reasons. However, in high-level competition, athletes must develop good physical condition, team spirit and concentration in order to be successful. A Hockey game is played between two teams, of 11 players each. A game is divided into two 35-minute periods, with a 10-minute interval in between. Each team tries to score as many goals as possible in the opposite team’s goal post. There are two Hockey disciplines: indoor Hockey, which is held in an indoor venue, and outdoor Hockey, which is held in an outdoor venue. Only outdoor Hockey is included in the Olympic Games competition schedule.

Originally held in ancient Greece, they were revived by French Baron Pierre de Coubertin in the late 19th century. The Games of the Olympiad, better known as the Summer Olympics, have been held every fourth year since 1896, with the exception of the years during the World Wars. A special edition for winter sports, the Winter Olympic Games, started in 1924; since 1994 these are no longer held in the same year as the Games of the Olympiad.

Ancient Olympic Games The Olympic Games begun at Olympia in Greece in 776 BC. The Greek calendar was based on the Olympiad, the four-year period between games. The games were staged in the wooded valley of Olympia in Elis. Here the Greeks erected statues and built temples in a grove dedicated to Zeus, supreme among the gods. The greatest shrine was an ivory and gold statue of Zeus. Created by the sculptor Phidias, it was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Scholars have speculated that the games in 776 BC were not the first games, but rather the first games held after they were organized into festivals held every four years as a result of a peace agreement between the city-states of Elis and Pisa. The Eleans traced the founding of the Olympic games to their King Iphitos, who was told by the Delphi Oracle to plant the olive tree from which the victors' wreaths were made. According to Hippias of Elis, who compiled a list of Olympic victors c.400 BC, at first the only Olympic event was a 200-yard dash, called a stadium. This was the only event until 724 BC, when a two-stadia race was added. Two years later the 24-stadia event began, and in 708 the pentathlon was added and wrestling became part of the games. This pentathlon, a five-event match consisted of running, wrestling, leaping, throwing the discus, and hurling the javelin. In time boxing, a chariot race, and other events were included.

Under the urging of Kano Jigoro, a judo athlete, the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) was established in 1911. Two athletes were sent to participate at the Fifth Olympiad in Stockholm the following year. The first 2 Japanese to participate as members of a Japanese team were Mishima Yahiko, a sprinter, and Kanaguri Shiro, a long-distance runner. Though the next games were to be held in 1916, they were canceled due to World War I. By the 1920 Games at Antwerp, Japan had fielded a team of 15, and earned its first awards: a pair of silver medals in singles and doubles tennis. At the 1928 Games in Amsterdam, Japan took its first 2 gold medals, in track and field, and swimming. Athlete Hitomi Kinue became the first woman to join a Japanese Olympic contingent. She received a silver medal in the 800-meter event, and her success encouraged more women to take up competitive sports. A contingent of 131 members represented Japan at the 1932 Games in Los Angeles, including 16 women. Japanese athletes earned a total of 7 gold, 7 silver, and 4 bronze medals in track and field, swimming, equestrian events, and field hockey.
