Before the home run...
before the layup...
before the slap shot... there was a ball and a stick. One of the oldest of competitive pastimes, the sport of field hockey dates back well before the Ancient Olympic Games. Although the exact origin of the game remains unknown, 4,000-year-old drawings found in the tomb at Beni-Hasen in the Nile Valley of Egypt depicted men playing the sport. Throughout the following centuries, variations of the game were played by a spectrum of cultures ranging from Greeks and Romans to Ethiopians and Aztecs. Hockey first appeared on the Olympic program at the 1908 London Games and again in 1920 at Antwerp. The sport was again featured on the program at Amsterdam in 1928 and has been an Olympic sport ever since. Women's hockey became a fixture on the Olympic program in Moscow in 1980.

    History
Men's field hockey has been an Olympic sport since 1908 and women's field hockey was added to the program in 1980. In 1920 and 1932, the men's standings were determined by a round robin tournament and the women's version of the sport used a round robin tournament in 1980 and 1984. In all other years, a single-elimination tournament has been used, with a championship game to decide the gold and silver medals. For those years, the score shown under "Final" is the score of the gold medal game. The tournaments begin with two pools of teams playing preliminary round tournaments. In men's play, the top two teams in each pool advance to the semi-finals. In the women's tournament, the top three teams advance. Top of page

    Future spot for architect's drawing!
The search is on. We have begun looking for land in central Pennsylvania to build a campus for the Institute. Our plan is described in more detail below. Eventually we anticipate that this campus will be one of the largest sports facilities in Pennsylvania.
The IISOH effectively has two divisions the Library and the Museum. The Board of Directors are seeking benefactor(s) to endow each division with a $25 million donation. An endowment will also be sought for the theatre in the amount of $25 million. The benefactor(s) will then be offered the opportunity to name the Library, Museum or theatre, subject to the final approval of the Board of Directors.
    Go to the ENDOWMENTS page.

Our plans are to construct facilities on a campus approximately 300 acres in size. This will allow us have room for expansion in the decades to come as we increase the endowment and add sports facilities to the educational program. Sports fields are desirable in order to teach through participation and play. If we have a baseball field we can teach the history of baseball by playing a game using 1860 rules for 3 innings, then playing by modern rules for 3 innings. In the basement of the Museum we could have a bowling alley from the 1800's where the pins have to be set by hand, and right next to it have a modern bowling alley that is fully automated. Our visitors can go bowling either way. Consider the possibilities for each and every sport this means a lot of space is needed.

    OLYMPIC HISTORY
Modern field hockey evolved in Britain in the late 1800s but was not introduced to the Games until 1908 and only took a permanent place in Antwerp in 1928. Amazingly, it took until Moscow in 1980 to introduce the women's game. The men's game was dominated by an incredible run of victories by India over three decades; between 1928 and 1956 all six gold medals in 30 consecutive games were won by Indians, one of the most remarkable Olympic statistics. As interesting to the statistically minded is the fact that Balbir Singh, who scored five of the six goals that took India to a 6-1 victory over The Netherlands in Helsinki, 1952, was just the first of four India players of the same name who played on winning teams. The first Balbir Singh, however, was the best; he was renowned for confusing goalkeepers with his turn of speed and body-swerve and was a member of three successive winning teams, 1948, 1952 and 1956, by which time he had been made captain. The Indians have won two further titles since 1956 and no nation has won a consecutive victory since India in Melbourne.
