What is fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a type of rheumatism which affects the muscles and ligaments but not the joints. It will not cause permanent damage but it will last for months or years. Because there are no outward signs, other people may not appreciate the pain and tiredness you are suffering. People with fibromyalgia often look well and feel awful. It is a common condition, sometimes so severe that it interferes with personal and family life. In fibromyalgia the fibrous tissues ( fibro- ) and muscles ( -my ) are affected by pain ( -algia ) and tenderness. The pain may often feel as though it affects the whole body. Tender points are usually present in certain areas of the body. These help the doctor to make the diagnosis. If enough pressure is applied to these places most people will find it uncomfortable but in fibromyalgia there is a change in the threshold at which pressure causes pain and many of these points can be extremely tender. Some typical tender points are shown below. Tenderness at individual sites sometimes occurs and this can give rise to localised conditions such as tennis elbow. In fibromyalgia, however, there is tenderness at a number of points.

I wish to personally welcome you to this web site. It has been created, with love, for you. When we first get diagnosed (or wonder if we should be diagnosed), I know too well how difficult it is to find information about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (aka CFIDS, M.E.), Lyme, and/or Fibromyalgia Syndrome. There are a myriad of sites that bring you the basics, and I try to present you those basics as well as information slightly beyond. At the moment, there is no cause nor cure. There are no magic bullets. This disease is so complex, no one drug will work. This is not a disease of just your muscles, your immune system, your sleep dysfunction, your hormones, your nutritional deficiencies, your NMH, or your gut; it is a cluster of symptoms that involve every system of your body. Treating it, therefore, involves testing and treating those deficiencies. The controversies surrounding that and the differences in our health contribute to our stress. My new job is to help us sort that all out. Hugs, Marilyn K

I am a fibromyalgia/chronic fatigue syndrome survivor. The purpose of this site is not to diagnose or cure any disease or malady, but is presented as food for thought. My name is Dominie Soo Bush. I am a piano teacher and church musician in Green Cove Springs, Florida. I developed fibromyalgia in 1982 due to severe emotional stress and job stress while working as a legal secretary. I suffered with debilitating muscle pain and stiffness, fatigue, insomnia and depression. I consulted doctors in many cities. They all prescribed drugs, but nothing really helped and I felt like a zombie! I tried chiropractic, physical therapy and massage therapy and took vitamins by the handfuls. It was all very frustrating, not to mention expensive! I also had serious hormonal, neurological and allergy problems. I later developed CFIDS after an encounter with an especially nasty virus.

What is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a common form of muscular pain and fatigue. The word fibromyalgia means pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons. Syndrome means a set of symptoms that occur together. FMS affects 3 to 6 million Americans, and is 6 to 8 times more common in women than in men Because the pain and symptoms of FMS are not visible, it may be underdiagnosed. FMS is not a form of arthritis, although the symptoms may be similar FMS is a chronic condition that affects all areas of life and can be very disabling. What causes Fibromyalgia? The cause of FMS is currently unknown There is nothing people with FMS did to cause the pain and other symptoms The onset of FMS may follow an illness like the flu, a traumatic incident like an automobile accident or fall, or emotional stress

Diagnosis and Treatment of Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is a poorly understood medical condition characterized by soft tissue pain, fatigue, sleep disturbance and widely distributed areas of tenderness known as tender points. It is a chronic condition with no cure that affects about 3.4% of women and 0.5 % of men. There is no laboratory test to diagnose fibromyalgia, which previously caused some health care providers to believe the condition to be psychosomatic, or brought on by the individual’s emotions. However, recent research has shown that fibromyalgia patients typically have altered sleep patterns and brain chemistry. Many report awakening repeatedly and not being refreshed by sleep. Furthermore, sleep disturbances (as well as stress) may lead to symptoms of fibromyalgia. One-third of patients with fibromyalgia also have low insulin growth factor levels, which indicates low growth hormone secretion. Researchers have also found that fibromyalgia patients have elevated levels of a neurotransmitter cerebrospinal fluid substance P which is associated with enhanced pain perception. Fibromyalgia patients also have low production of the steroid cortisol in contrast to higher-than-normal levels found in depression patients. These disturbances in the nervous and endocrine systems may cause fibromyalgia. In essence, pain is not caused by inflammation or damage, but is instead associated with a central defect in pain processing. Some speculate that physical or psychological trauma may cause such changes in the central nervous system, leading to fibromyalgia.

Fibrofog, Fibromyalgia and Dissociation Understanding why some memory-impaired patients with fibromyalgia score normally on neuropsychological testing. Frank Leavitt, Ph.D.
fleavitt@rush.edu

Our clinical and research experience suggests a way of unraveling the mysterious discrepancy between patient conviction and neuropsychological findings. Instead of the flaw residing in the patient complaint, it may well be that these patients as a group are being held to the wrong standards. Testing logic often takes the following form: if memory deficits fail to be demonstrated by scores on standard measures of memory that operationally define level of impairment, then fibromyalgia patients are overestimating or overplaying the severity of their memory decline. The logic is flawed because it does not account fully for the many ways memory failures arise and overlooks shortcomings in the testing process. A process prominently linked to memory impairment is dissociation. Dissociation is a failure to integrate experiences that normally go together. Short-term memory complaints of dissociatives are well known to mimic the complaints of patients with fibromyalgia that we now refer to as fibrofog . Level of dissociation fluctuates in intensity throughout the day. Variation is likely to be influenced by daily stress. With rising intensity, sensory experience is transformed into haze like sensations leaving the patients feeling as if enveloped in a fog. At more severe intensity, lapses in memory are likely to occur leaving the individual unable to remember what was said, done or planned. But cognitive testing at levels of dissociative intensity (low) that are less apt to affect memory should yield normal performance.
