What Is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and multiple tender points. "Tender points" refers to tenderness that occurs in precise, localized areas, particularly in the neck, spine, shoulders, and hips. People with this syndrome may also experience sleep disturbances, morning stiffness, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety, and other symptoms. What Causes Fibromyalgia?
Although the cause of fibromyalgia is unknown, researchers have several theories about causes or triggers of the disorder. Some scientists believe that the syndrome may be caused by an injury or trauma. This injury may affect the central nervous system. Fibromyalgia may be associated with changes in muscle metabolism, such as decreased blood flow, causing fatigue and decreased strength. Others believe the syndrome may be triggered by an infectious agent such as a virus in susceptible people, but no such agent has been identified.

New Support Group/Helpline/Awareness raising
I, myself, have battled for years to find a reason for my problems and finally I have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia Syndrome and Hypermobility Syndrome. What I have learned to realise is that no one appears to have heard of either and that there is little awareness or support for sufferers particularly in rural areas such as Herefordshire.
There are many groups throughout the UK which are mainly ME/CFS based but have FM sufferers in them as they share similar or overlapping problems but none of them come under the FMA UK umbrella. This is often the case in rural areas.
I feel that there must be many more FM sufferers out there in Herefordshire that would like to link up and move forwards raising awareness and supporting those newly- diagnosed and long-term sufferers.
Whilst many people are saying that ME and FM are very much linked, it is treated as a separate illness in the UK.
I am looking for anyone who is willing or able to help with any input whether for a support group or otherwise - ideas appreciated. Please e.mail me if you are interested or have any ideas or if you are an FM sufferer. It would help to know how may sufferers are in our County.

"Most people come to the clinic when everything else has failed,"
says Stuart Donaldson, Ph.D. EMTA, BCFE, ABDA, director of Myosymmetries Calgary. "Typically, their profiles show they have been through 2 1/2 courses of physiotherapy, have tried three types of medication with varying degrees of success and side effects, and they've tried chiropractic. They report temporary relief with traditional treatment modalities, but the pain returns." The typical Myosymmetries client is simply not willing to accept the pain and mental setback of living with pain or dysfunction. "These people are motivated - they want to get better. They take responsibility for their health. They are not content just to sit back and do whatever their doctor tells them." Stuart Donaldson, Ph.D.

9.08 Fibromyalgia (Trigger Points)
Presentation
What to do:
  • When you find a trigger point, map out its exact location (point of maximum tenderness) and place an X over the site with a marker or ball point pen. If the trigger point is diffuse there is no need to outline its location.
  • Obtain a careful history and perform a general physical exam to help exclude the possibility of a serious underlying disorder such as rheumatoid arthritis or cancer.
  • With any suspicion that an underlying problem exists, obtain an x ray or an erythrocyte sedimentation rate. These studies should both be normal in fibromyalgia.
  • Where trigger points are diffuse, prescribe a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory such as naprosen (Anaprox) 275mg two tablets stat then one qid or ibuprofen (Motril) 800mg stat then 600mg qid x 5 days. A muscle relaxant like cyclobenzaprine (Flexaril) may also be helpful.
  • When a focal trigger point is present you can suggest to the patient that he may get immediate relief with an injection. Inject 2-5ml of l% xylocaine or loger-acting 0.5% bupivacaine along with 20-40mg of methylprednisolone (Depomedrol) or 2-5mg of triamcinolone (Aristospan) through the mark you placed on the skin, directly into the painful site. Be sure you are not in a vessel and then "fan" the needle in all directions while injecting the trigger point. In addition, to insure total coverage, massage the area after the injection is complete. The patient will often get complete or near-complete pain relief, which helps to confirm the diagnosis of fibromyalgia. The beneficial effect of this injection may last for weeks or months. A supplementary five day course of non-steroidal anti-inflammatories is optional.

BONUS; COLDS, FLU, AND SARS SURVIVAL INFORMATION T his back pain, neck pain, and backache therapy website is a derivative work of the book, MAKING YOUR BAD BACK BETTER, with The O'Connor Technique (tm), How You Can Become Your Own Chiropractor , by William Thomas O'Connor, Jr., M.D.. This claim is made because, within the author's greater than 15 year clinical experience treating back and neck pain; he has repeatedly been able to routinely and instantly alleviate pain and restore range of motion in the majority of patients presenting to him with the typical back pain, neck pain, spinal pain syndromes that commonly afflict patients who agonize from this type of pain. By instantly achieving pain relief while applying specific body movements (stretching, bending, and postural changes) to patients who obtained no benefit from other practitioners, he is able to prove that the pain's source is mechanical in nature because it has a mechanical solution . The same results are being reproduced through the book/website see testimonials because it empowers the reader/browser with the ability to manage their own pain problems by successfully learning and applying this unique technique of back pain diagnosis, therapy, and prevention for pain relief that is elsewhere unavailable.(

    Fibromyalgia Solutions
    by David Edelberg, M.D.
Conscious Choice, March 1999 Fibromyalgia, a chronic condition afflicting approximately ten million people, mainly women, has been an elusive and controversial diagnosis for years. Only recently are doctors understanding something about this condition, which, though not dangerous in any way, can really interfere with a person's sense of well-being, often more so than "serious" illnesses like heart disease, diabetes, or high blood pressure. Fibromyalgia, which simply means "pain in the muscles," frequently goes undiagnosed for years. The severity of symptoms may range from the fairly innocuous "I carry all my stress in my neck," to daily unrelenting diffuse muscle pain often combined with a sense of overwhelming fatigue.
Last month's article discussed some of the newer concepts about fibromyalgia, that the condition is not so much a specific disease with positive blood tests, or changes in the body observable by x-ray or under a microscope, but rather a series of certain physical alterations the body can undergo in response to chronic stress. The source of stress can be highly variable, ranging from the relatively rare situation of physical trauma (the whiplash pain that just never goes away) to infectious ("It was the flu from Hell. I never recovered") to the most frequent setting, an emotional one ("It began after what I remember was the worst year of my life"). With fibromyalgia, the well known adrenal gland "fight or flight" response of the body, which was designed to be turned off once the sudden emergency had passed, seems to remain in the "on" position, with complex body responses to stress spinning slowly but relentlessly out of control.

What is Fibromyalgia? Fibromyalgia (FM) is a common rheumatic disease with an estimated prevalence of 2.1-to-5.7 per cent of the population. Women are much more likely to develop FM than men by a ratio of four-to-one. The incidence of FM increases with age and it is most common in women 50 years of age or older. Although FM is a relatively new term, this syndrome was known by several other names in recent years, including soft tissue rheumatism, fibrositis and non-articular rheumatism.

Welcome to a website by and for people with the illness Chronic Fatigue and Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS), known for 40 years in the U.K. by the name Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (M.E.), and also sometimes called Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). I have been diagnosed with CFIDS/M.E. since December 1994; today I would probably call the variety from which I suffer R.E.D.D. , for Rnase-L Enzyme Dysfunction Disease. Essays I have written about the disease, and my experiences with the disease, can be found at "Living Life, Living Death: Essays on CFIDS/M.E." . I am currently working on a book manuscript of the same title. This website is undergoing a number of changes. I still own the domain, cfids-me.org, but I've had to shift its storage location and that's taken a couple of weeks to accomplish; I'm also going to change the contents a bit because I haven't had time to work on it for a while. Please be patient, and I'm sorry for any inconvenience this has caused anyone.
