... Self Help Strategies Below is a description of fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), but because of its substantial symptom overlap with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), it can be viewed as applying to chronic fatigue syndrome patients as well. WHAT IS FIBROMYALGIA SYNDROME? FMS (fibromyalgia syndrome) is a widespread musculoskeletal pain and fatigue disorder for which the cause is still unknown. Fibromyalgia means pain in the muscles, ligaments, and tendons – the soft fibrous tissues in the body. Most patients with FMS say that they ache all over. Their muscles may feel like they have been pulled or overworked. Sometimes the muscles twitch and at other times they burn. More women than men are afflicted with FMS, and it shows up in people of all ages. To help your family and friends relate to your condition, have them think back to the last time they had a bad flu. Every muscle in their body shouted out in pain. In addition, they felt devoid of energy as though someone had unplugged their power supply. While the severity of symptoms fluctuate from person to person, FMS may resemble a post-viral state. This similarity is the reason experts in the field of FMS and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) believe that these two syndromes may be one and the same. Gulf War syndrome also overlaps with FMS/CFS.

We have many requests for the physician's side symptoms list, known as "Devin's Diagnostic" This site describes two medical conditions which often occur together: Fibromyalgia and Chronic Myofascial Pain. Chronic Myofascial Pain was previously called Myofascial Pain Syndrome. See the handout " Myofascial Pain — A Neuromuscular Disease ". These conditions are clearly clinical disorders, and as they share symptoms with so many other disorders, are currently among the most misdiagnosed of ailments. We hope that this information will help people get more information about these illnesses so as to better their chances of accurate diagnosis and improved therapy.

Is Massage Good For You?
Massage is a wonderful adjunct therapy for all kinds of health problems, and especially for musculoskeletal pain and other related problems such as stress, muscle tension. Also on the list of problems could be headaches, insomnia, anxiety and even Fibromyalgia and CFS. By relieving stress, massage may even help things like high blood pressure and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Besides relieving muscle spasms and pain, massage helps to increase the body's production of endorphins. There are many different kinds of massage techniques, ranging from deep tissue work to light touch and movement techniques. It is important to find a technique that feels good to you and promotes relaxation. Equally important is to find a licensed massage therapist that you are comfortable with. Please check with your physician beforehand to find out if massage would be helpful for your condition.

Welcome to the Official
Fibromyalgia Association UK Web Site
The Fibromyalgia Association UK (FMA UK) is a non-profit making organisation working towards raising awareness of fibromyalgia (FM) in the UK. As FM is still a little known condition, our aim is to offer help and support to sufferers, the newly diagnosed and carers alike to ensure they do not have to struggle alone with this chronic, life-altering illness. Together we can make a difference but we have to work together to become a force to be recognised when dealing with the Government, Health Services, Employers and Insurers. In our numbers we will have strength. We need to ensure our medical professionals understand our condition and that we receive the best possible care and courtesy that is due to any individual. Because FM is an 'invisible' condition does not mean it is not very 'real' to us. FMA UK neither sells, nor promotes any particular product or health regime although we do carry articles from medical professionals and individuals describing various self-management techniques. We will also carry advertisements and links from our sponsors and those we work closely with and who wish to help us. This does not imply endorsement by us and we always strongly recommend that the sufferer discusses any potential treatment, exercise regime or alternative treatment with their medical professionals.

Maintaining a Positive Attitude:
Ten Strategies
Deborah A. Barrett
"Have a positive attitude." How many times have we heard that one? While our emotions can not cause fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome, they no doubt affect our symptoms. But how can we maintain good thoughts when our bodies feel so lousy? This challenge, of course, does not pertain exclusively to chronic illness, but to any time when things do not go as we wish. But in the case of ongoing illness, seeing the positive presents a continuous struggle. Yet our moods are not perfectly correlated with our physical state. Most likely we can all recall times that despite much pain or fatigue, we were able to cope and even achieve high spirits. Perhaps the weather was perfect, good friends visited, we just accomplished something or helped somebody, making us feel good about ourselves. Other times, depression seems to take hold even when our physical discomfort is at a manageable level. Why is this? Answering this question is the key to finding optimism. To me, the vicissitudes of fibromyalgia feel like a swim in the turbulent sea sometimes it seems we have fallen and the waves continue to crash on our heads, as we fight to rise, only to be knocked down yet again. But that same ocean sometimes allows us to find a wave we can ride smoothly to the shore.

Fibromyalgia Alternative names Return to top Fibromyositis; Fibrositis; Myofascial pain syndrome Definition Return to top Fibromyalgia is a common condition characterized by widespread pain in joints, muscles, tendons, and other soft tissues. Some other problems commonly linked with fibromyalgia include fatigue, morning stiffness, sleep problems, headaches, numbness in hands and feet, depression, and anxiety. Fibromyalgia can develop on its own, or secondary to other musculoskeletal conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, or systemic lupus. Diagnosis of fibromyalgia requires a history of a least three months of widespread pain, and pain and tenderness in at least 11 of 18 tender-point sites. These tender-point sites include fibrous tissue or muscles of the:
  • Neck Shoulders Chest Rib cage Lower back Thighs Knees Arms (elbows) Buttocks
The overwhelming characteristic of fibromyalgia is long-standing, body-wide pain with defined tender points. Tender points are distinct from trigger points seen in other pain syndromes. (Unlike tender points, trigger points can occur in isolation and represent a source of radiating pain, even in the absence of direct pressure.)
