National Council of Teachers of Mathematics NCTM is the professional organization for math teachers, and the source of the standards for math teaching and learning. On this page, you can find electronic links to the standards, sample lessons, and more. NCTM is a great resource for teachers - if you don't already belong, and you teach mathematics, you should consider joining. The journals they publish are full of great ideas, Web links, and announcements of meetings and conferences.

Mathematics and the Internet
Janice Staines
Education Officer, BECTa The Internet can be used to support the teacher in her preparation and presentation of mathematics resources and her pupils with their learning of mathematical concepts and ideas. The multi-media nature of the Internet can also enhance the learning experience through the use of colourful graphics, animations and sounds. The audio/visual aspects of many Internet resources mean that they also can be used to extend the mathematics curriculum for younger children. For example, an animation can easily present Pythagoras' Theorem in a form which can be understood by Key Stage 2 children although they might not understand the 'proof' of the theorem until they are much older. http://www.maths.uq.oz.au/~pkp/pythagoras/pythagoras.html The Internet also provides teachers and children with access to up-to-date information which will allow 'real time' investigations to be undertaken. For example, the class may also be monitoring temperature and rainfall in local, national or international sites. This data may be available in some daily newspapers, but it is also available on-line. The advantage of having the information electronically being that it can be easily edited or assimilated into a table, graph or spreadsheet for analysis. Alternatively, children may be investigating travel times between different destinations and require access to current timetables and many of these are now accessible on-line. Children planning a train trip between, say, Coventry and Weston-super-Mare, can access the Railtrack 'Timetables On-line' site:

Math haters, take heed. One class with Jane Barnard may crack your math-bashing world into a million congruent and precise pieces. The Armstrong Atlantic State University mathematics professor has for the last 30 years personified the passionate conviction that die-hard math-haters can grasp the difference between pi, probability and Pythagoras—and actually enjoy the process.

Date of Review: This article describes the reasons behind the introduction of an AP Statistics course for high schools. The NCTM wants students to study math during all four years of high school and understands that the only college-level courses offered are Calculus AB and BC. Though the number of students taking AP Calculus has been increasing, the NCTM realized that many students do not want to take calculus, and consequently do not take any math courses their last two years of high school. The NCTM also recognized that more and more college students are required to take statistics for many different majors. This lead to the deveoplment of an AP Stats course, which would give students another opportunity to earn valuable college credit. This article also describes the AP Stats course a bit. The main themes of AP Stats are exploring data, planning a study, anticipating patterns in advance, and statistical inference.

Jane T. Barnard I have committed my professional life to the learning and teaching of mathematics. My zeal has brought me to teaching/learning situations both inside and outside the “traditional” classroom. As I reflect on my ideas and experiences and beliefs, I doubt I have the ability to convey to another – with any degree of understanding – what I am about as a teacher, what motivates my interactions with students, what I hold most dear in the learning environment. So, I will relate a modicum of my feelings and experiences in hopes that a glimmer of my passion for the learning and teaching of mathematics will shine through. We are each nourished by serving others. Thus, my view of teaching is one of service. I believe I am called into teaching mathematics, because that is my gift. Whether in the classroom or conducting a workshop or seminar, I try to demonstrate a caring nature, a passion for teaching as well as for the field of mathematics, and a love of the students I teach. In working with young people in Atlanta, I met a gifted young woman at Grady Hospital ten years ago who had kicked a drug habit but who had AIDS. In conversations with her about how I – as a teacher – could most greatly impact my students, she said:
