Alcohol
Structure of Ethanol Alcohol may be the world's oldest known drug. Fermented grain, fruit juice and honey have been used to make alcohol (ethyl alcohol or ethanol) for thousands of years. The production of products containing alcohol has become big business in today's society and the consumption and abuse of alcohol has become a major public health problem. On this page, only the effects of alcohol on the brain and behavior will be discussed. For further information about other effects of alcohol, see the links at the bottom of this page. Alcohol is considered to be a central nervous system depressant . There are several factors that influence how alcohol will affect a person. These include:
  • age
  • gender
  • physical condition
  • amount of food eaten
  • other drugs or medicines taken
The Path of Alcohol in the Body
  • Mouth: alcohol enters the body.
  • Stomach: some alcohol gets into the bloodstream in the stomach, but most goes on to the small intestine.
  • Small Intestine: alcohol enters the bloodstream through the walls of the small intestine.
  • Heart: pumps alcohol throughout the body.

"Casual users and serious researchers place their trust in the accuracy and completeness of the data on the network. They're relying upon information of unknown pedigree and dubious quality, since little on the Internet has been refereed or reviewed."

It's Better to Teach Safe Use of Alcohol
by David J. Hanson, Ph.D. Many societies and groups have successfully prevented alcohol problems. How we can apply their techniques both in our families and in our society to reduce the abuse of beer, wine, and distilled spirits or liquor? With much wringing of hands, we seem to be a nation petrified by the thought that someone somewhere may be drinking too much and running amok. Many activists feed this paranoia with their insistence on talking about alcohol in the same breath as illicit drugs. And yet, humankind has had a relationship with beverage alcohol for over 6,000 years, suggesting that we need to divorce the subject from the emotionalism that has engulfed it, and approach it from a more intelligent, reasonable perspective. Abusive drinking is, without question, a serious problem. But we will never make real progress against that problem until we take a hard look at the approach modeled by those cultures that have established a "truce" with alcoholfrom Italians to Greeks, to Jews to many others.
