    Picking up the Research Again
At my job I have a unique schedule. Cornell College teaches courses one at a time. The course I teach is the only course that each of my student takes. It is a very intensive, very deep way of learning, and it has many benefits that I will not go into right now. What I will say, however, is that no matter what I do, I cannot seem to get anything at all done while I am teaching, other than occasionally check my email, open my mail, and take a daily shower. Otherwise, I teach, I prepare for class, I meet with students, and I go to endless bureaucratic meetings in the name of service to my institution. What I'm saying is: I can't do any research or writing while I'm teaching. It's taken me a long time to admit this. I've been at my job for 2.5 years now, and I'm just saying it out loud for the first time. Whew. I always figured I should be able to squeeze something in here or there, set aside two hours in the morning for a bit of writing, do something at the end of the day, etc. And then I never do, and then I feel super guilty. Enough of that, though. I'm just resigning myself to the fact that I have to set aside my research for big chunks of time, and then pick it up again and run with it.

Campaign to fight Fetal Alcohol Syndrome launched
By Darryl Newman and Cassie Nicklen Published: Monday, November 25, 2002
The launch of a campaign against Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Alcohol Related Birth Defects kicked off Saturday morning as a group of 40 spectators listened as a young boy sang during the opening ceremonies.
Manuel Fritize, son of Toni Fritize, whose husband is an employee at the heath department in Hatch, said the directors of the program asked him to sing.
"It is fun and exciting. I came today because (the event) sounded interesting," Fritize said.
"I think it is wonderful that my son is singing at a community-worthy event," Toni Fritize said.
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is 100 percent preventable and is caused by the mother drinking during pregnancy, according to Angela Zamora, the director of the event, as well as the maternal and child program coordinator for the Ben Archer Health Center in Hatch.
The event, which was held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Doña Aña County Health Department, addressed the prevention and public awareness of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and alcohol related birth defects. Several organizations were present at the health fair, such as Families and Youth Inc., Mujeres Unidas en Accion Contra el Sida (Women United Against AIDS), the March of Dimes and the Department of Human Services.
Zamora said she was excited about the turnout. "It's very nice."

Overview If you drink alcohol while you're pregnant, your fetus has a drink as well. This puts your baby at risk of a serious condition called fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), which is a group of birth defects. These defects are irreversible and can include physical, mental and behavioral problems. FAS affects between 3 and 22 live births out of every 10,000 in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Although doctors aren't sure how much alcohol you'd have to drink to place your baby at risk, the more you drink, the greater the chance of problems developing. For that reason the best advice is: If you're pregnant, don't drink alcohol.

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome About the Course Fetal alcohol exposure is common. As many as 20% of women use alcohol during pregnancy. Three to four percent of children are exposed to potentially teratogenic doses of alcohol. Providers who care for women have the opportunity to prevent exposure by identifying and treating women who drink above recommended limits. This course is designed to teach primary care providers how to use Identification of At-Risk Drinking and Intervention with Women of Childbearing Age, a guide for clinicians who work with women, published by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). After you register for this course, you will be sent a copy of the guide.
Target Population/Intended Audience Clinicians who care for women such as: obstetricians, family physicians, internists, advanced-practice nurses, physician assistants, counselors, and social workers. Objective/Goal The objective of this training program is to teach clinicians who treat women how to use the protocols contained in the guide in their busy practice settings. The overall goal is to increase clinician detection and treatment of women of childbearing age who are adversely affected by alcohol before they become pregnant, and to minimize fetal damage in at-risk women who are pregnant.

    SYNOPSIS:
These documents will provide background information on FAS/FAE and the terminology used in describing this condition, but in layperson's language. This does not imply stupidity, but this is difficult to enough to understand, without having to decipher the difficult terms before you can begin to absorb the information. An illustration appears after the data on FAS. Some of the facial characteristics may be found on FAE children as well. Back to Directory SYNOPSIS:
    PERSONALITY AND LEARNING TRAITS
This document is a breakdown of the personality and learning traits of FAS/FAE children. Knowing what to expect in terms of how they learn and process information, as well as what other agendas may be in their brains can make a tremendous difference in the lesson that are planned. Not only that, but because of some of the traits , such as retreating and isolating themselves, teachers will be prepared and formulate a plan of action to address the issue. At first glance, most of these seem negative-it isn't so much negative as it is how they process what you say and how you say it. Remember, just because you know what you said, they might not.
