Early intervention with those affected by FAS
When we raise issues about FAS on the community level, often those living and working with those with FAS identify the need to have more information about how to intervene with those affected. The following information is offered to address this important need. Just as the characteristics of those affected have been presented by age level in the FAS section of this Guide, the interventions that work are presented here by age level. The information provided is general in content. It is important that all interventions be individualized and that all recognize the uniqueness of each child. No two children with FAS and other alcohol related effects are alike, even if they have the same diagnosis and the same family experiences.
Environment plays a significant role in the growth and development of all children. It can either enhance or hinder development. Early intervention can reduce the impact of a delay in development. In some situations, it can prevent secondary disabilities (such as mental health problems, school problems, trouble with the law, and alcohol and other drug problems) from occurring later in life.
It cannot be stressed enough that all care must be family-centred and culturally sensitive, with attention to the role that parents play in the development of their children.

Parenting Children with FAS/FAE
As an adoptive parent of a young son with FAS, I have come to greatly appreciate stories from other parents of disabled children that describe triumphs, successes or humor with their special child. Humor is especially important. So, I have decided to use this section to share stories of humor and accomplishments we have witnessed with Seth. I will update this page on a monthly basis and I encourage other parents to send their stories as well, so we can all share in our children's growth. FUNNY STORY #1 We are having to spell words at times when we do not want Seth to understand what we are talking about, as many things increase his anxiety. This morning the bus garage called to say they could transport Seth home in 1 1/2 hours instead of 2 (the original plan). I said to my husband, "I hope that doesn't mean they will just be driving F-A-S-T". Seth then responds, "My bus driver doesn't drive fast mom, but sometimes daddy does"! MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENT FOR THE MONTH
After watching his 5 year old friend swing on the swing set and pump her legs to go, Seth got on and did the same. He could not do this in the fall!

The Abstract: Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), is something whose mere mention implies different things to different people. It is a 'syndrome' immersed in stereotypes by the North American society in which we live, the majority of which are sadly negative. In the paper that follows, though written from a North American perspective, I will refrain from examining the specifics of these stereotypes, for to acknowledge them would only give them attention that I do not believe that they deserve in the context of this article. This paper does not try to give specific answers to the questions on FAS and our education of it. To do so would need a much longer and larger paper than is applicable to this assignment.. The idea of what follows is to give an overview of what we currently teach people around FAS and FAE and to show that from information that is now starting to be slowly become available, that we need to re-examine just what we are teaching. Whether or not the education that currently give people around this subject is fair and accurate remains to be seen. My hope is that this paper at least gives the reader food for thought.

I hold this issue very dear to my heart, and that is children with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), and Fetal Alcohol Effects (FAE). Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is the name given to a combination of mental and physical defects present at birth and continues throughout the rest of the child's life. I am homeschooling two special-needs kids. Some of my friends think that I am very silly to do that. Their advice is to send them off to school because kids need socialization. I like my friends, but I do not think their advice is suitable for my situation. My kids are suffering from Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. That means that during the birth mom's pregnancy, she frequently drank, and her baby was damaged. In fact, both kids have retardation due to the alcohol and are classified as having serious brain injury. This brain damage cannot be reversed! Children with FAS can learn, but often in a very different way than offered in the classroom. They must have a place where it is quiet and with very little activity. These kids tend to be ADHD as well, and are constantly minding everyone's business but their own.

What is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome?
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Fetal Alcohol Effects (FAS/E) refer to physical and mental birth defects that result from mothers drinking alcohol during pregnancy. A pregnant woman who drinks any amount of alcohol is at risk, since a "safe" level of alcohol ingestion during pregnancy has not been established. However, we do know that the more you drink, the more you increase the risk of harming your baby. A diagnosis of FAS is made when there is known or suspected maternal alcohol exposure during pregnancy and when the following three characteristics are present:
  • Delayed growth. Central nervous system involvement (intellectual disabilities, developmental delay or learning disabilities). Characteristic facial features such as small head, small upper jaw, short, up-turned nose, smooth, thin upper lip and narrow, small eyes.

    Seller/Server Certification Program
    The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission strongly feels that trained sellers, servers, and managers are better able to identify and prevent sales of alcoholic beverages to minors and intoxicated persons. Because of this belief, the agency has certified courses for seller/server training. These courses are provided by certified private business whose curriculum has been reviewed and approved by the TABC and whose trainers are also certified. These courses cover the laws applicable to the sales or service of alcoholic beverages to minors and intoxicated persons. The courses also teach techniques to identify these persons and prevent sales to them. Individuals who successfully complete an approved program are issued certificates and licensees or permittees could, under certain terms, receive a restrained administrative case.     Excerpted from Fetal Alcohol Syndrome: A Guide for Families and Communities, by Ann Streissguth, Ph.D. It was January 1973. I was in shock. I had just finished administering a psychological examination to the seventh young child in the group that Jones and Smith, my dysmorphology colleagues (physicians with expertise in congenital malformations), had asked me to see. Although the seven children represented three racial groups and were not themselves related, they looked eerily alike: small, sparkly eyes; small heads; and an appearance about the mouth that appeared as though they were pursing their lips even when they weren't smiling. Except for the two who were still infants and the one who was so flaccid she was carried in the arms of her mother, the other children had a wispy, flighty quality. I thought to myself that these children who were so curiously and surprisingly unafraid of me were like butterflies. These children clearly had brain damage. To an experienced clinician, their neurological insults were as obvious as the aftereffects of meningitis or encephalitis. Each of these children had experienced damage to his or her central nervous system (CNS) that was apparent in his or her erratic movements, poor coordination, flighty attentional states, and poor performance on psychological tests, despite a captivatingly alert and bright-eyed manner.
